    Catholic to UU "conversion"
    Hello, all,

My name is Meghan and I've been Roman Catholic for 22 years (read: my entire life). I've found myself disenchanted with the entire business to some degree, remaining involved because it connects me to my family. However, the Catholic church requires a number of hoops be jumped through for marriage and my intended leans more to the Indigenous American view of spirituality. After much research we are going to "try out" Unitarian Universalism. Has anyone else "jumped ship", particularly from Catholicism and a strongly Catholic family? Any suggested reading or things we should know before attending services/social hour?

    Thanks so much,
    Meghan

    and another...

This was a quote at the bottom of an email I got from one of my professors.  I think it's pretty cool.

    simple truth

This is on my church's website in the "sermon" section, and I was really inspired by it's truth, stated so simply.  I think it is true that the more simple words in language can sometimes possess the greatest meaning.

    Do not be daunted

by the enormity of the world’s grief.

    Do justly, now.

    Love mercy, now.

    Walk humbly, now.

You are not obligated to complete the work,

but neither are you free to abandon it.

    Poll re: Muslim congressman
Hey, if you have a few free seconds, visit www.jacksonsun.com and take the poll on the front page. The question: "Is it OK for Muslim Congressman-elect Keith Ellison to use the Koran for his swearing-in ceremony?" The results are currently running 75 percent on the "No" column.

I'd never endorse stuffing a ballot box -- though I suspect others have, since you can vote once every five minutes or so.

    Ft Lauderdale Pagan Pride Day
Ft Lauderdale Pagan Pride Day at the UUCFL (Unitarian Unversalist Church of Ft. Lauderdale) is coming! It starts at noon Saturday September 23rd (rain or shine). This is my first Pagan Pride Day but I've been going to weekly classes with other pagans at UUCFL and we have lots of fun. Hope to see you there (I'll be the one with twigs on my head). ;)

Thanks for your time and patience! <3

    New syndication feed
[info]uu_world_news is a feed connected to the UU World magazine Web site's "Unitarian Universalists in the Media" feature, which tracks news stories about UUs in other online sources. UU World will be adding RSS feeds to its own content in the near future, and I'll be posting those as well.

(This is a correction to the previous description of the feed. I misunderstood Chris Walton's description of it at a href=http://www.philocrites.org/>Philocrites</a>. Unfortunately, LJ won't allow renames of syndication feeds.)

My name is Ellyn and I'm a bisexual UU pagan and I'm very happy to be a part of this community! It's great that UUs can come together and talk about our congregations and experiences and just to fellowship especially since there aren't a whole lot of congregations out there. Thanks for letting me be a part and I'll be checking up on it! Love and Light. . . IP

Hi my name is Melissa, this is my first time posting, but I've been here a while. I was wondering if anyone here was from the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and could point me in the direction of a church or community gathering I could join. I'm transfering to a school in St. Paul in January and I would really love to continue regular attendance.

Thanks so much for your time,

Hue and Cry - Letter to the UUA
    This morning's outgoing email:
    Alarm!

Most of our new people discover us via our web site, which they find via http://www.uua.org/CONG/

How can they do this now when the congregation directory no longer includes web addresses?! What happened?

If they could be restored, many people would be most grateful; I definitely would.

This email sent to the email address listed at this page, although having listed that email address in the clear like that, it's probably spam-infested. Nevertheless, if people find your congregation this way, you may want to say something about it.

    UU (and like-minded) podcasts
Hi, I'm the founder and a co-moderator of the [info]chalice_circle community.

I thought I'd pass along the list of Unitarian Universalist sermon podcasts I've been compiling in that community; it also includes some podcasts pertaining to Deism, the Ethical Culture movement and the Religious Society of Friends (aka the Quakers), three strands of largely liberal religion that share some common ground with UUism.

Here's hoping those links offer some food for thought/inspiration, especially for UUs who don't live close enough to a brick-and-mortar congregation to attend. And please, if you know of a similar podcast that's not on the list but should be, drop me a reply at the post linked above.

    UU = Radical?
An article posted at the Daily Kos today spotlights an attempt by Take Back North Dakota to smear Senator Kent Conrad for being a "Universal Unitarian" [sic] in an article called "Sen Conrad’s ties to radicalism".

The Daily Kos article as well as the article that inspired it are full of vitriol, which is nothing that I need or encourage, but the comments to the Daily Kos article are terribly interesting and I highly recommend them. For instance, did you know that it was the youth of the Unitarians and the Universalists who merged before the denominations did?

Mostly, I found it amusing that a right-wing publication is attacking someone for alleged religious radicalism, but can't bother to get the name of the religion right.

Subject: [PR-L] Unitarian Universalism advertises in the Big Apple!

    Date: Thu, 17 Nov 2005 15:57:11 -0500
Beginning on November 14, the good news of Unitarian Universalism will
be present in the Big Apple on the 1200-foot NBC Astrovision screen
overlooking Times Square! Over the course of 24 days, eight 30-second
commercials will be shown daily and will be seen by 1.5 million people
traveling through Times Square each day. The commercials will run from
November 14-27 and again from December 23 - January 1. The spots will be
viewed by the 2.5 million visitors attending the Thanksgiving Day parade
(which will be broadcast by NBC) as well as the 750,000 revelers
attending the New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square.

The spots will air on this approximate time schedule:
    10:25 am
    12:25 pm
    2:25 pm
    4:25 pm
    6:25 pm
    8:25 pm

Through the generosity of several donors the UUA was provided with a
great opportunity to make Unitarian Universalism better known to New
York area residents, as well as a national and international audience of
tourists visiting the Big Apple. Over 36 million visitors will have the
opportunity to see a message about the good news of our faith during
    their visit to New York.

The Times Square ad uses visuals adapted from a Houston UU media
campaign; the families shown are real UU families from the greater
Houston area. The ad's message shares important values of Unitarian
Universalism. Visit our "Did You Meet Us in Times Square" page for
further information on this new holiday outreach effort! See

    U-U Clergy S.O.S.
I am sending out an S.O.S. for any U-U clergy member so feel free to pass this along.

I am, as many of you know, an MDiv student in Boston at Andover-Newton theological Seminary, in the Unitarian-Universalist tradition focusing on the CUUPs (Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans)aspect. I am taking a class on the "Theology of Call", pretty much a class on learning to discern theological call. For our second paper, I have to interview 5 clergy members and write about how their Calls compare. Inititially, the clergy members could only be Christian clergy (yes, even U-U clergy were not allowed as a part of this).

Well after more than 20 turn downs for interviews and about a dozen who refused to return the interview they said they were going to do, I finally had it out with my teacher and he okay'd the use of Unitarian Universalist Clergy for my paper...yesterday, the Paper is due tomorrow!

So I am sending out a call to any U-U clergy member to please fill out the below survey and send it back to me at anselmthelost@yahoo.com

I need it back by midnight at the latest.

    Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Sincerely--
    Daryl

    Theology of Call Interview

Please answer the following questions with as much
detail as you feel necessary. All answers are kept
private between myself and my teacher Paul Sangree.

    1. What was your first model for ministry? Meaning,
    who was your first role
model of what you wanted to be?

    2. At what age did you first perceive that you
    experienced a “Call” to ministry?

    3. Did you receive a Call to the same religion you
were raised in? If so, did you ever consider being
    Called to another religion?

    4. In what way did you experience your Call? (dreams,
inner feeling, major life event, voice of G-d, etc.)

    5. How did seminary(or your training despite seminary) inspire or uninspire this Calling?

    6. What was the first great personal challenge to
    fulfilling your Calling?

    7. What is the focus of your Calling?

    8. Is there a historical model or person whose call
you greatly admire and/or pattern yourself on?

    9. How do you feel your Call has prepared you to
    interact with other religious traditions?

    10. Do you feel that your Calling has been validated
by this point in your life? If not, will it ever be?

    Germany and all
I have just recently been stationed in Ansbach, Germany with my husband who is in the US Army. I have never lived in an isolated military community before. We lived in Savannah, GA where there were plenty of alternative ways to express your spirituality. Here, there are only catholic and protestant church services. Unfortunately, what should be a source for spiritual support, ie the chaplains, is not unless you are christian. I have had very bad experiences with chaplains in the past, so maybe my judgment on this matter is clouded. In any case, I would have to travel 2 or more hours to get to the UU groups closest to me.

I am having a hard time not feeling as though I were in a spiritual wasteland here. On the plus side, I carved a pumpkin with the words "Happy Harvest" and the UU Chalice and Flame. It was awesome!

I do miss feeling a part of a spiritual community though.
