Time-Lost Proto Drake
I just started farming for this guy and so far I've only seen vyragosa once, as per rumors I returned 6 hours later but didn't find any of the spawns. Dirkee being on the same respawn seems kinda strange to me though, any reason why this is being speculated?

Does anyone have any success stories with getting it?

Only one person on my server has it after almost a month of the expansion being out.

It's just ridiculously rare, especially since it shares a spawn with vyragosa.

TBQH I wish they had made it a rep grind or something with the argent crusade (since they actually use the time-lost drakes for quests) but whatever. It annoys me that all the protodrakes are a bitch to get. They're all either low drop rates, rare spawns, or tied to incredibly obnoxious achievements.

I'm annoyed too but I'm also determined. My toon will be seeing nothing but storm peaks for quite awhile.

I honestly just wish that there was more concrete information on him, instead of rumors left and right, that way I could farm him properly instead of hoping he paths by here at this time.

Yeah, if I were you I'd just set up a macro and fly around jamming on it. I always flew close to the terrace/engine of the makers since that's where all the other drakes spawn.

As an aside: I only just noticed yesterday that protodrakes have arms. I thought their wings were like, their forelegs. Then I turned the camera when I was flying on a blue protodrake from dun neifleheim and noticed they have tiiiny little forelegs that actually look hilariously small.

I still want one though. Hoping I get lucky with my oracles egg but lol 1% drop rates. Fucking protodrakes.

Macro+ endless flying= The only way to find this sucker. I've been camping the space for a few days with no luck. But a free epic flyer? I'll take it considering I don't even have the 5k yet for the skill but it makes it that much sweeter when I can.

Yah, that's what I've been doing with the macro. I've read up on all the websites to try and determine a good path to take.

I'm kinda curious if they spawn automatically when the servers come back up.

I should look into these eggs. I've been 80 for over a week and I still haven't been to the Basin yet. I'm still finishing Dragonblight quests now.

One of them might spawn automatically when the servers come back up just because of the length of the maintenance, so it's probably a good time to check. I've also heard the dirkee doesn't share the same spawn as them but the problem is that vyragosa is 10 times more likely to spawn than the protodrake.

Originally I check with Wowhead and someone had a map of possible spawn locations. Eventually I just started flying in a circular path while hitting my macro.

ETA: And yeah the eggs have a chance of being a dud, a noncombat pet, or the low low chance of being a green protodrake. the only downside is you can only hold 1 egg at a time and it takes a week for them to "hatch". But still, it's better than nothing.

Pretty damn low. But nobody is sure of the exact numbers yet due to the fact that there's still so little data.

It annoys me that all the protodrakes are a bitch to get.

They have to make something a hard find in the world or something to work for, plainly for the people who are into that kind of thing.

They do have something hard to find that people have to work for. There's an achievement for finding a bunch of the rare spawns in northrend.

I gave up on the timelost proto-drake because to me, flying around mashing a macro doesn't seem like "working" towards anything. It seems like tedious half-afking while hitting a macro hoping that someone else doesn't get there first.

Again having luck =/= working for something.

Why does this annoy you?
You'd rather they be easy to get and everyone have one?

I'm more annoyed that Dragons are the big thing now, personally..

Why does THAT annoy you? It doesn't bother me. Everyone is different. Besides, it's not like the netherwing drakes were hard to get before WoTLK. I got one in just over a week and a half on my shaman originally. Some of the drakes now are a bit easy to get, like the red drake is just an inevitability, but have YOU done Sartherion with all 3 drakes up for the twilight drake? Some mounts will always be more rare than others. It's not about a type of mount (like drakes, hippogryphs, etc.) being rare, it's about the specific mount itself being rare.

I just want one protodrake. I don't want every single color of the rainbow. Most, if not all, of them are incredibly hard to get and are based on luck. Absolutely no real reliance on skill with the exception of -maybe- the achievement based protodrakes. And even then you have to have a not shitty group or poor luck with certain things (not dying in naxx or having someone in the group with fast interrupts for the moorabi achievement, for example) to get it.

There's a difference between working to get something and just getting damn lucky.

*chuckles at the amount of editing*

Again, I ask. Would you rather everyone have one? What is the point then? May as well have a vendor with every possible type.

What I don't understand, and it's not just with you, is why someone can be annoyed at a viable aspect of the game.

The level of difficulty in this game has dropped enormously from its conception. Everything in this game is almost EZ mode.

So, the fact that something isn't given to people for just showing up is the only thing that keeps this game remotely interesting to play.

They have two options. 1: The grind, whether it is for money, rep, achievments. 2: Luck. Randomness, rare spawns. There is -no- other way something unique in this game. If someone wants something unique, one of those options has to be used. Please, if you are capable, come up with another. And don't list skill, because it falls into the EZ mode catagory.

I dunno, PUGGing Heroics with every idiot that just hit 80 and thinks they are too good for normals is pretty damned hard. Like, the tank and healer (me) soloing Loken hard. Like DPS is way too slow so bosses take forever and I run out of mana with starting Naxx gear hard.

We know a few strong DPS, but the rest we're finding are nightmares that can't manage to move out of poison rings or coordinate on boss fights.

It's kinda hard.

I would submit the proposition that those who are 80 only three weeks out from the expansion are more than likely in the group of people who drop out of school/work to farm their way to 80. They aren't the brightest tools in the shed, and they've been entirely focussed on killing stuff as quickly as possible, so it hardly seems surprising to me that they're not quite with the program in terms of how to behave in heroic instances.

Rapid levelling is a totally different playstyle to running heroic instances.

Two days ago, I healed for a couple 58 hunters who needed a run through Ramps. They were friends who had been playing for all of ... about a month, I believe.

They didn't know how to trap. They got angry with me for not tanking. When one of them aggroed the patting boss and four mobs, one of them RAN AWAY FROM ME saying "I don't want to die, sorry". And THEN for some reason the topic came up that I'm a chick who digs chicks, and they went AFK for five minutes. ._. Very awkward.

So yeah. I think you're right. Powerlevelers are not always the bestest. XD

At three weeks out many of the raiders who do know how to play are hitting 80. My guild is just starting 10-player Naxx, and the group they have has many of our best players. The *real* hard core, the people who are going for world, region or big server firsts, mostly hit 80 within a week.

rapid leveling is different, but it doesn't take especially rapid leveling to hit 80 in 3 weeks, I don't think. And I'm not sure it's accurate to say that the first batch of folks to 80 are more likely to be lousy at instancing than those of us who take a few months.

(Reply to this) (Parent)

[info]anycah
2008-12-03 12:00 am UTC (link)
It depends.

There are two types of players that will rapidly hit 80 (though three weeks isn't that bad), very good players (raiders, etc) and players with a lot of free time (which go through the spectrum of good and bad). Most raiders are in guilds, so they can do guild runs. I am pretty much a reroll in a guild just starting, so I don't have access to the people, and get to take my chances. Though, pugging is the only way to really meet people, so it has yielding good connections with the bad.

of the proto drakes, it's by far not the easiest.

from worst to easiest:

1. What a long, strange trip it's been: All seasonal event achievement requirements. violet proto drake

2. Heroic: glory of the raider: complete all achievements of 25 man raids. black proto drake.

3. glory of the raider: complete all achievements of 10 man raids. plagued proto drake.

4. glory of the hero: complete all heroic achievements. red proto drake.

5. Time lost proto drake: camp him. you could argue this being #1 though but it's simply that, camping :P

6. Heroic Skadi the Ruthless: kill him, as he has a chance to drop it. very low chance though. Blue Proto drake.

7. easiest of all... grind oracle rep to exalted. get the "mysterious egg". wait 7 days, open it. It can be one of 4 noncombat pets, a green proto drake, a dud, maybe more.

Just a bunch of booze and crappy potions so far, and that trinket which is kinda cool but otherwise useless.

Well, you know. Also, badgers.

Is it true that Vryagosa and the time-lost drake share the same path, or is that just speculation? Can anyone whose killed Vyragosa share some info? She's quite high (can be seen from the ground, but not attacked) pretty much everywhere she patrols, a target macro can pick her up way before you see her so don't worry too much about being too high or too low to find her.

I had a hell of a job getting her into melee range as a feral druid, ugh.
