Backstory, A Missing Piece (FanFic)
The Masters of the Stonemason's Guild muttered to each other as the guards herded them into the conference room in the Stormwind Keep. The guards hadn't explained why they were being summoned (or arrested), just kept waving their swords. A dripping wet Highlord Bolvar Fordragon awaited them.

"All right. I want to know who designed the canals."

The masters shifted uneasily and glanced at each other.

"Who came up with the canals?"

No one answered.

"I said, who came up with the canals!"

Silence.

"That does it! Guards, throw them all out of the city! And don't even think about asking for your wages!"

And now you know.

lol I had a similar experience when I was new to stormwind. I kept falling down into the canals, and my bf (then a lvl 30ish rogue) kept laughing. Last time I pulled myself sopping out of the canal, I yelled. "WHOEVER BUILT THESE FRIGGIN CANALS I'M GONNA RUN THROUGH WITH MY AXE!" lol

Yep. This came from the kids distracting me while I was going around on my brand-new epic mount. :P

Actually, in a world where you can't just fly over the city walls, canals are a great defensive idea. Bridges are easily defended, and, of course, it gives you someplace to put the alligators.

*swimming with the gators. Again*

Yes, inside the city. The city is designed to protect the central keep. Canals are the 2nd defense against invaders who manage to get past (or over) the city gates, and are going after the political center.

now if they were used for commerce I'd say yeah brilliant. but they go nowhere and considering there are at least 3 bridges over each section and not one in front of/across the keep it's not that sound... Especially with all those flying mounts that would just fly over it all anyways.

But what do I know, ambiance is ambiance ;)

But the canals chop up the city a lot more than is useful for defense. There's only one bridge between the gate and the keep.

In reality, they'd also be used for transporting goods and people by boat. Obviously Stormwind isn't shown to be a very large city but for large deliveries it would certainly be more reasonable to own a boat than a horse and carriage.
(Frankly I'd just hire an adventurer to carry anything for me, but it's getting expensive with the prices they charge these days. I had one the other day that expected 15G for 5 minutes of work!)
