What would be the best job (tank, ranged DPS, etc.) in a raid for people with lower-end systems? (we're talking about anywhere from 3 — barely playable — to 10-12 FPS during boss fights here)

DPS, IMO. As long as it isn't a really DPS-sensitive fight. Healers with bad frame rates = people die. Tanks with bad frames rates = people die. DPS with bad frame rates = things die a little slower (which could lead to people dying, but it isn't as surefire as tanks/healers)

During peak hours, I've seen my framerates drop to 3fps, but since I have been raid healing for a very long time, I have been able to compensate for it and not had issues. Having bad latency is worse imho. That said, I agree overall dps is more forgiving of the bad frame rates.

Ranged DPS, minimal movement and you're oput of the way of a lot of the damage, plus if you screw up you'll likely screw up yourself, not the entire raid. Although to be honest I don't think you'd be being fair on the other people in your raid to be grouping when you have an unplayable system.

I second the qualification of ranged dps. Melee has a lot of movement and can't just pewpew away at something like the rest of us can.

Might want to consider Warlock for DPS - your DOTs won't lag if you are.

Yup, ranged DPS, especially a priest or a warlock.

Priests are very reliant on low latency OR serious use of stopcasting to maximize their DPS. Warlock maybe, but I would honestly say mage. Having raided on a mage, s. priest and lock I would say mage is the single most ezmode DPS out there. Priests have to dodge AE's still, mages can sit outside them.

Especially frost spec, where there's no spell rotation to keep up, you just sit there and spam one key for the whole fight (well, you do if you suck, but you'll get by doing that if you have half decent gear). And spamming one key is a lot easier than it used to be since they changed the spellcasting/server mechanics.

Going to agree with the ranged DPS, especially (affliction) warlock. Shadow priest, not so much. I tend to be pretty latency sensitive on my spriest due to MB and SW:D spam.

I tank as a warrior just fine at 6 fps. Druid healing is laughably easy, anywhere from 4 to 12 fps in Gruul's Lair and Serpentshrine Cavern. I wouldn't try healing as a priest with that framerate though.

Do not confuse low framerate with high latency! Things still happen in a timely manner, but you have to be prepared to learn how to tank and memorise the "script" that a particular boss follows. It also helps if you zoom right in and point the camera at the ground. Hell, if you're tanking you don't get to see much besides the crotches of various bosses anyway.

Also, if you haven't already, defragment your hard drive. You'd be surprised how much of a performance difference it can make.

Also, disable your virus scanner (especially if you have Norton).

I used to work in tech support for an ISP and one of the first things I'd do is get rid of Norton if there were weird problems I couldn't explain. I hate that bloody thing. Causes all manner of nonsense.

Ranged DPS. Warlocks, Hunters, Mages, that sort of class. I'd rule out up-close melee because some fights can require you to need to move away from the mob quickly.

Have you tried turning your graphic settings way down for boss fights? You typically don't need much draw distance or detail for a boss fight.

I would agree with a range dps class, but one with an "out" like mages with iceblock. In some raid encounters, you do have to react(and usually move) pretty quickly, and low fps doesn't help this. if yuo have an out button, you can at least hit that if you get in a pickle.

Healing. I used to run on a horrid computer and whats great is I can turn myself away from the raid during trash/some fights and my fps increases so its at least a bit managable. I don't have to face the boss 100% of the time since I'm not dpsing

Additionally I wasn't ever that situationally aware but I still did well on meters and such all the way up to Illidan with 5-10 FPS :P

if it's truly just a fps issue, I'd say healer.

turn on raid frames and point your camera at the ceiling, though you'd have difficulty as any class in any fight that requires a lot of situational awareness.

have you tried turning all your graphic settings down to the minimum and turning off player/pet/npc name displays?

I used to raid on my old machine (15 fps was great to me then), ShadowPriest or Hunter. Hunter died more cause of missed timed FD but I still got the job done.

I hate to knock my own class, because there's more to it than this, but: Holy paladin? Raiding with that low FPS is a bad idea, but if your raid is willing to put up with it and you have just one target, you can spam FoL and do your job decently.

none, your bad computer will most assuredly hinder the raid.
