Warcraft 3 & Exp
Hey guys,

Whilst I do my best to read through WoW Wiki and get all the back stories etc, I always feel like I'm missing a piece of the overall puzzle when playing WoW.

I own both WC3 and TFT but I am only up to where Arthas' destroys Quel'Thalas. I was wondering, is it worth me just sitting down and powering through both games so that I am somewhat caught up? It's mostly that RTS doesn't appeal to me so much that I haven't gotten further, but from what I can tell, pretty much every key character's story is told between these two games, is that true?

Basically, I just want to see more about Illidan, the Legion, Kael'thas, Vashj and all that crap. Arthas is just an emo git, so I don't care too much about him. Haha.

In the meantime, can someone suggest a nice, streamlined UI package that is excellent for raiding? Right now, I'm a bit hodge podge with my add-ons and would like something neater.

Cheers.

*chuckles about the Arthas comment* Hang on through it, wait 'til you have to deal with Grom and Illidan. Stupid jerks. *fistshake*

I'd personally consider it worth it, and while I'm not all that great at RTS games, I loved those ones. Warcraft II is why I'm even here (as hard as the game was for me), so I feel like I 'owe' it. The games do seem to tell the tale of the important characters in Azeroth.

Well I completed WC1 when it came out way back when, but I really don't think there was much in the way of storyline in that. WC2 I started when I was younger, but got bored. I play it occasionally on my crappy work laptop when I am bored, but it doesn't seem like there is much storyline there either except for maybe the expansion? I don't know.

Eh, I followed it well enough at the time. Warcraft III is much more linear, whereas Warcraft I and II had two not-entirely-true storylines.

I have an odd love for Warcraft I, despite the fact that it's slow and old.

I recently grabbed a copy of WC1 from work (I have NO idea why we had a copy of WC1 lying around, but it's mine now!) So. Pleased. If it wasn't for the new patch, I'd take a WoW break so I can play it. :)

If you're really in it for just the backstory (which I was), cheat codes are your saving grace—"whosyourdaddy" was the one that I used (makes you invincible and able to one-shot basically anything) but something where you just can't die might be better (in case there's dialog during combat that you might miss by making combat end so quickly, heh). It won't help you so much on timed missions, but there aren't a whole lot of those that I can remember.

I bought WC3 and TFT specifically for the lore and storyline, since I absolutely hate RTSes, and I was getting a little irritated at the "generic recap" that sites like Wowwiki would give. It worked out fine for me, but I haven't actually opened the game back up since I completed it, so :P

Hah oh I couldnt do that, I refuse to cheat in games, because what's the point then?

I'll still fight my way through it, its the resource building that bugs me.

[...] what's the point then?

The story?

But if you don't want to play only for the story, YouTube can at least offer you the videos (and maybe even the ingame scenes, I don't know, I never looked).

Ahhh I'm just one of those gamers who feels that you should work for your rewards, otherwise I feel cheap and dirty. Haha.

What finally got me to give into WoW (since I have long disliked MMOs) was the fact that I loved the story from WC3 and TFT so much. So I'd say it's worth it. If you dislike RTS, though, I agree with the above commenter to use cheats.

I don't completely hate RTS, I just find them a bit slow sometimes dependent on the game, or I get sidetracked by something else. I mean, I love Command & Conquer 3 it's a really fun game, but I get sidetracked by other games so often then find it hard to go back to them. =/

I know what you mean; my copy of C&C3 is sitting unfinished :P Though Dawn of War managed to completely own me for a good long while.

I so want to play it through, get some skills, and get online with it... but I do not have the time with WoW and leading a raid guild. =/

I'm a big fan of Starcraft but WC3 just didn't do it for me. I just cheated my way through to get the lore once I started playing WoW. The neat thing for me was playing "The Founding of Durotar" and seeing how close they were to WoW. Question marks over quest giver's heads, kill x of y quests, quest rewards.... Worth doing just to see WoW .5

if you want a ton of good lore and stuff. DEFINITELY read the books! War of the Ancients trilogy deals with Malfurion and Illidan. Rise of the Horde, Lord of the clans, background for the horde, Durotan and Thrall and Ogrimm and all that jazz + beginning of warlocks. all kinds of goodies to be found in the books.

Oh yeah, I have the 4 book archive and Rise of the Horde. They're fluffy, but a good read nonetheless.

Seems to be the concensus. Man, I wanted my non-WoW time to be focused on Assassin's Creed, Bioshock and a billion other games. Hahaha.

Well, I've got two for you from WoW Insider:

Sylvictus compiled two videos from Warcraft 3's cut scenes.

Rise of Illidan Stormrage

Rise of the Lich King

Enjoy!

I recommend that all WoW players play through WC3 and TFT. They set everything up, like why the Blood Elves aren't part of the Alliance, why Kael'Thas is like that, etc.

What doesn't sit right with me is why the Blood Elves are waging war against their own so-called Lord of the Blood Elves. Is there something I missed, whilst playing my blood elf?

I mean shit, they still got statues of him all through Silvermoon.

I'm given to understand that this is something you learn when you hit Shat (my only 58+ character is Alliance), but the Blood Elves back home don't know that Kael'Thas works for the Legion now. They see him as the messiah who will lead them to a better life in Outland.

yes. the game is suppose to be viewed as a continuous story, even though everything still happens at the same time. once the blood elves of silvermoon got to outland to ally with kael, they saw him turned to evil, so they defected from him and became the scryers.

Yeah, I figured that was how it was supposed to work. Kael'Thas exists in two locations at the same time... Paradox!

YMMV but:

The problem with the WoW story is that it has to progress AND stay in the same place. New players have to see the story from the beginning of WoW, and the end game, as well as all the middle stuff, has to happen. Keep that in mind whenever you look at the lore.

The blood elves of Silvermoon and Azeroth do not know about what's going on in the Outland. They still trust in their prince and believe he is in the Outland, working to fix their mana addiction/withdrawal (which, arguably, he plans to do by reawakening the Sunwell, the 2.4 trailer establishes that he still has his people in mind when working with Illi, although he is also insane). If you really read the quest text and listen to some conversations in Silvermoon, you can see that some Belfs realize something is not quite right, but most are keen on getting to the Outland to rejoin him. They also don't know that he's working with a (half-)demon, and that draining mana from enemies to sate their addiction is more insidious than it seems. As you progress into the Outland you discover that Kael'Thas is actually working with Illidan, that the blood elves picked up on it, and split from him, forming the Scryer in Shattrath (if you're Aldor make sure to carefully follow the questline in Netherstorm with Kaylaan or whoever he is), then that the blood elves have teamed up with the demons, etc. Naturally, you'd expect that they'd send word back to Silvermoon, the statues of Kael would be torn down, and all that, but then there'd be no reason for the Silvermoon NPCs to be going "Hey there Level 1, start killing shit so you can join our savior in the promised land!"

Although now that patch 2.4 has hit and not only is Kael known to be evil, but he's chilling out not far from the Belf capital, doing mischievous things, Silvermoon would have to figure it out. . .I wonder if anything has changed there.
