Headset for Vent/Team talk...
First of all, thanks for all the comments on my graphics cards post.
I'll be getting the ATI Radeon X1650 PRO soon...

But which headset to get? It's finally time to let my guild mates enjoy my deep soothing voice (Which would supposedly be great for reading the shipping forecast) so I'm asking all of you:
Which headset is an absolute winner for use with both WoW and Skype?

It would need to cover both ears but other than that, I'm reasonably easy. So far I'm tempted by whichever Logitech headset I see first in whichever gadget shop I go past first...

I use a Cyber Acoustics AC-634 - they were recommended by a friend a few years ago and I love mine. The neckband style is far more comfortable than a headband (they always gave me headaches..), the earpieces sit over the ears so comfortably that I often forget I've got them on, and the mic pickup and quality is good.

I can second the comfort level of these for the same reasons, the quality is ok.

The Logitech ones are affordable, but they aren't necessarily the greatest and supposedly break quite often (which I suppose isn't bad if you didn't pay all that much for them).

I've got a Sennheiser PC131 and a Cyber Acoustics AC-28 (whatever cheapie Best Buy was selling at the time). Sennheiser's sound quality is outstanding and I found the mic to be quite sensitive. The CA one is more of my backup.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16826160101

This is the headset I'm currently using. Unfortunately, Newegg no longer carries it or it isn't manufactured anymore. :/ I bought my first one back in July '05 for $75+shipping, but one of the earpods snapped off in late '06, and I was able to buy a replacement through Tritton's RMA department for a reduced price ($50 I believe.) But, I know for certain that both the mic quality and the sound quality is excellent.

The reason why I mentioned a deactivated item is because Newegg currently has other, similar headsets made by Tritton on their website. (here) If I have to replace this headset I'm currently wearing at any point in the future, it will likely be with one of those.

Also, if you're still taking (belated) suggestions for a video card? If you know the specs on your computer system, and you know for certain that your power supply could handle the extra power demands, I would recommend HiS ATI Radeon x1950Pro. However, if you're NOT familiar with your system's specs or you have any doubts, the x1650 Pro will work just beautifully too. I recently upgraded my nVidia GeForce 6600 GT to that card (though it was the PCI Express x16 version), and it rocks everything that I push through it. However, I'd like to point out that the 6600GT played WoW just fine, and the overall performance of the 6600GT is less than the card you've selected -- therefore, the card you've selected should work like a dream for you. The two major reasons why I chose the x1950 Pro are, 1.) I've been playing other, more graphically-intense games recently; and 2.) It's so close to top of the line that I won't need to upgrade it for quite a long time to come (and I don't ever plan on upgrading to Vista, hence the x2000 series is pointless to me.)

[EDIT]
Also, a general note: No matter which card you choose to upgrade to, make sure you have good airflow in your computer case and around the video card. Because those things will heat up fast, and an overheated video card is not a fun thing to have. (My 6600GT once reached 90°C while I was playing the 14-day trial for an unnamed, graphically-intense competitor to WoW. OUCH! It's been slightly quirky ever since.)

Anyway, enough babble from me. Hope this all helps!

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned about cooling, but I'll take the chance for now.

That card looks like a winner to me, and the headset too. Let's see if I can get it here in the UK...

How big are the earmuff-type pads on your Tritton?

My big concern with my Logitech (other than the fact that, you know, they died horribly after like six months and the mic no longer works and the headphones make obnoxious staticy noises) is that it's incredibly uncomfortable for me; either I have big ears or the headset itself is pretty sub-standard size-wise, but I can't wear them for more than ten or fifteen minutes at a time without my ears screaming for a divorce. They're the "big and comfy" type too. I had a pair of headphones once (without a microphone attached) that looked kind of like those Tritton ones, but instead of being the size of my ear (and thus putting the pressure on my ear and hurting), they went around my ear, and put the pressure of the headset on my skull where it didn't matter. I miss those headphones, they were the best ever :< It's been hell shopping for a new pair because there aren't really any stores in my area that have a good selection of headsets for me to be able to look at and try.

Actually, I used to have that problem with an older set of headphones myself. Instead of having just a piece of foam that covered the entire earpod, it had the muffs that cover the ear and filter out outside sounds... but that used to bother me, too, since those earpods were really small and I couldn't wear them for too long.

Doing a quick measurement on one of the headset's earpods right now, the earmuff pads measure about 4.25 in. (~10.5 cm) from top to bottom, 3.25 in. (~8 cm) from side-to-side at the widest point, and it's shaped from top-to-bottom like an upside-down egg. The padding that surrounds the ear, from the outer ring of the earpod to the inner ring, is about 1" thick, and the padding inside the earpod (between the ear and the speakers) sits about 3/4" inside. My ears barely touch the padding that rests between the speakers and the ear, and while my ear lobes DO come into contact with the outer earmuff pads, the design of the headset does put the pressure more onto the skull and less onto the ears, which makes it comfortable enough to wear the headset almost all day. Sadly, I can't help you with the newer designs that Newegg does carry now, but hopefully they're similar. ;)

Aside from that, I, too, used to have a Logitech USB headset before getting the Tritton ones. The earpieces weren't very special, and neither was the microphone -- overall, it was a pretty cheap design, and the first time I ever used the built-in mic (about 6 months into owning them), it already sounded terrible, making all kinds of hurricane-like noise. >.< I still use Ventrilo from time to time nowadays, and the mics from both Trittons (even after one of the earpods snapped off of the first one) sound excellent. Unfortunately, in studying the earpod on this one just now, it appears that the earpod is starting to come loose on this one too. >.< I'm guessing this is why they stopped manufacturing this specific headset... guess I'll be ordering one of the newer designs on Newegg and hoping for the best!

Anyway, hope this helps out some!

... actually, looking at some of the reviews for those other Tritton headsets that I linked... ew, that's a lot of bad reviews. o.O I might just have to look at something different. Guess they just don't make 'em like they used to. x.x

This is the headset I use, love, and adore. I loved it so much that, after one of my cats chewed through the mic cable, I went out the next night and bought one exactly the same. :P

The headset I use at the moment is a Steelseries 3H. They're cheaper than the 5H (which are awesome gaming/lanning headsets) but the quality is good - it's pretty insulated so you don't get a lot of background noise.

My preferred headset for both WoW and Skype, though, is the Sennheiser p155s. They are -awesome- and I wish they were better stocked in my area.. the last ones I got I ordered online. I only broke them because I yanked the cable out of the jack :(

Oh, and the best thing about 5Hs is that they have a little connector which prevents you from doing the 'forget you have headphones on and try to leave your computer desk' and breaking the headset.. I can't find a picture at the moment, but I've heard these are really, really useful. :)

I don't really like logitech headsets, they're kind of uncomfortable and the cables are weak.

What I'd look for, though:
* a longish cable - most cheapo headsets may only have a 0.9m (3ft) cable which may not be long enough
* If it's going over your head, get one with padding on the head arch bit. If you play for long periods of time, having plastic pressing against your skull for hours is not very comfortable
* Similarly I've noticed that the ones that go around the back of your head aren't always adjustable
* I like earpieces that completely cover my ears, too. They're more comfortable than the ones that sit on your ears :)
* What kind of mic are you looking for? The p155s have a bar mic which sticks out in front of your face and the Steelseries have a retractable mic so you can get it out of your face when you're talking on a webcam, for instance. There are also mics that clip onto a shirt / the top of your monitor. Quite a few of my friends recommend getting a really good pair of headphones (like, audiophile quality) and a desktop mic, since they don't always use the mic and they like to listen to music.

Also, here's a Gameriot post about headsets. I think most of the people who play wow and post on gameriot tend to be on the competetive pvp end of the playerbase, but it's useful anyway: http://www.gameriot.com/forums/thread/501/1/
