WoW ACE Updater for Mac OS X
Figured this might be some use to others in the community, so:

A guildy and friend recently switched to the Mac, and being a programmer, he wrote himself a handy little app to automatically download and update ACE mods. It works along similar principles as the PC WoWAceUpdater, although I personally find it much more reliable.

I asked if he'd mind me sharing it, since I know there are other folks out there who play on a Mac, and he gave me his blessing, so here it is. This page has the download link and some documentation I threw together for it. It is, of course, free, and provided as-is.

Hrm. I've been using MacAceUpdater for some time, but it seems to be having some issues for me. I don't know if it's Leopard or what, but it occasionally locks up.

What OSes has your friend's software been tested on? (or perhaps I should say which versions of the OS)

Tiger 10.4.10 and 10.4.11, and Leopard. Worked fine in all of them, to my knowledge (and I've used it in all bar 10.4.10 myself).

Hang on, I play on a Mac, but I have no idea what an Ace mod is. I haven't been playing on one for long + i'm a nublet, so...can I ask for an explanation?

Ace is a framework for writing addons. Addons based on the Ace framework (techy stuff) are usually quite neat and memory-efficient, and work well with each other. Ag_unitframes, Fubar, Atlasloot, Omen etc are all Ace-based. Ace has nothing to do with Mac or PC, as WoW addons work on either platform.

WoWAceUpdater is a Windows (well, until now) program that makes updating your addons much easier - instead of downloading them one by one, it'll scan your addon directory and automatically install the latest versions (brilliant on patch day). This announcement relates to a Mac-based version of the updater, not to the addons themselves. Yay for this!

I tried some other updater (WUU?) recently, but it really didn't work for me. Froze a lot and had some weird options... hopefully this Ace one will save me booting into Parallels every time I want to update!

I've been using JWowUpdater as well. Wonderfully useful little app (or should I say javascript) that works perfectly every time.

Ooo alphabetical order! That was the thing that bothered me so much with the MacAceUpdater. It's a little slower, but I'd take that over a non-alphabetical list any day.

Thanks for the sharing!

do you know if it works with 10.3? I downloaded the MacAceUpdater, then when it didn't work I found out it was because i was still using 10.3. :(

of course, i could just upgrade my OS, but i don't have the resources to devote to that quite yet. :)

I have no idea one way or the other; it's a java applet, so I suspect it might.

Just tried this WoWAce Updater - doesn't work for me, doesn't seem to want to detect my WoW installation (and doesn't make a /mods directory either, as the readme.txt promised).

WoW is in /Users/[username]/Applications/Games/World of Warcraft. Any idea how to force it to find that?

I'm not sure if you've heard from the dev via email yet, but if not, this problem will be fixed in the next release, coming in the next 24-48 hours. :)
