Warning: Guild Banks Can Be Robbed!
All of my alts are in a casual guild that has a bunch of real life friends in it on Blackhand. With the new guild bank in 2.3, all of the old bank alt stuff got put into a four tab guild bank. The first tab was "Freebies" that anyone could access. Tabs two to four were all officer only access with the more valuable stuff.

Well it turns out last night a new initiate had full access to all of the tabs of the guild bank. That initiate stole 80%+ of the valaubles out of tabs two to four and then either deleted his toon or transferred to another server. So the bank logs list the initiate as "Unknown" for removing everything.

According to Blizzard, this is how they did it:

Known issue with Guild Bank withdrawal limits

"At this time, Guild Bank withdrawal limits for a given character are not reset when they join a new guild. Thus, whatever limits were applied to that character in their former guild will be carried over, and must be manually readjusted by the Guild Master in order to ensure the desired settings."

So the short term fix for this is for only the guildmaster to invite someone and manually setup their guild bank settings immediately after the invite.

omg that is *horrible*! My condolences to you and your guild. :(

I've passed the information on to my guild via our forums so everyone knows about it.

I can see account thieves/scammers using this to their advantage by intentionally creating a guild with a bank, then buying a few slots, giving everyone in the guild full access, then sending them out to get into other guilds with the sole intention of ripping off everything, selling it, transfering the money, then deleting the toon. Grrr!

I totally just logged in and made sure all the settings were reconfirmed. I also took off people's ability to invite until I get home later.

I wouldn't normally care but the bank is where we keep all our void crystals and enchant mats. So thanks for warning me. <3

No problem. I'd rather not have others repeat our experience.

how this coudl REALLY be bad

step 1. create your own guild. You will of course be GM. As GM, you have full rights to the entire guild bank
step 2. Dissolve guild.
step 3. get invited to guild with juicy bank contents
step 4. scoop everything out of the guild bank and run very fast.

Security is HARD, and the shared guild bank is something that needs more than casual attention to who has access, the GM also needs to pay attention to who can grant access to the tabs, for example.

Wow. Be careful out there people

Yeah this scam could cause major problems for guilds, so be careful with your guild invites.

Wow, that sucks about your guild bank. I hate it when shit like that happens, and it normally happens to good people.

I'll pass this along to my GL. Thanks for the heads up!

Doesn't fall into the new scamming rules blizzard has put out? did you send a ticket for a GM to look into it?

Our guildmaster had contacted Blizzard after he discovered the theft. Blizzard told him that they know who did it and that they were investigating it. They didn't give us the name of the suspected toon.

Since it's a decent sized (100+ character) casual guild, we don't know who it is, since guild invites were fairly open before this incident.

Update: Blizzard restored all of the stolen property today which is a plus. I doubt they'll tell us what they did to the guy. I'm guessing a temp ban or worse.

I've noticed an increase in new wannabe guilds and people begging to sign their charter, I wonder if this is why? *meh*

In preparation for the new guildbank, I created a guild for all my alts so I don't have to have them meet 'in person' or mail stuff around.

I suspect a few others are doing the same...

I've created a guild bank for my bank alt to keep junk in. Although currently it's full of runecloth and primals, which I now want to rush home and fix.

Minor Update: our guildmaster told me that while speaking with a gm about the issue, the gm made it sound like we weren't the only guild that were scammed by the guy. Which means the thief planned his scam ahead of time and is apping at multiple guilds with disposable alts.

At this point, I'd guess Blizzard would perma ban his account.
