Explain your WoW Name
I saw a thread like this on the General Forums, and the idea is really cool. So I thought I'd ask here :) Hopefully its not a repeat, my memory is spotty.

Explain the names of your characters! Your inspiration behind them, whether or not you still like it, etc! I'm curious to see how people come up with their names. Include their race and class as well please :)

As for me:
Multipass (BE Paladin): Leeloo dallas multipass.
Dystopia (Orc Lock): Inspiration highly from Dystopian literature, I've been trying to figure out a name similar to those ideals. It finally clicked together after playing Bioshock a bit.
Eventuality (Undead Rogue): Original inspiration from the title of the shortstory by Stephen King Everything's Eventual. I somehow thought to tack on the ity to it.
Gracefully (Tauren Druid): Uh... its pretty straightforward. I think druids are pretty graceful when they shape shift.
Maggotsyay (Nightelf Priest): Because MAGGOTS R YAY.

Okay, name yours! Your inspirations! WHy you like them! go go go

Melayna (NElf Druid) - actually a long-standing mis-hear when I was a kid and saw the Last Unicorn. I always thought the harpy's name was Melayna until I got the book. It's Celaeno.

Lilyndra (Tauren Shaman) - A different spelling of a character from the X-Men books, "Lilandra" of the Shi'ar.

Aw, The Fifth Element is the best!

Igarashi (Nelf Hunter) - Surname of my amazing high school Japanese teacher. Don't laugh - she was a bamf. Using this name also enabled me to meet people in game that had her as a teacher too o_O Small world, eh?

- Arenei (Human Priest): Made up this name ages ago (I believe it was from a comic I wanted to write when I was like, 13) and stuck with it through various MMOs.
- Areneia (BE Paladin): BECAUSE I R ORIGINAL BY ADDING AN 'A' AT THE END OF MY NAME D: (actually, I didn't wanna delete my shaman whose name was also Arenei but in the end, I ended up deleting her anyway)
- Allurei (BE Warlock): Same treatment as Areneia, only with Allure! I'M SO ORIGINAL.
- Mysidia (Human Mage): FF4 town zomg? It's a cool name. :|

... I'm such a nub with names. D:

Let's see here...

Kiariel (Originally KiaYewsong, but I snagged the name change when it came up): Kiariel Yewsong was a name I came up with during the beta for my character. [NE Druid]
Shandelzare: Named after the hero from DotA, whose name has since been changed to Shendelzare, because the maker of the map changed, and they redid a bunch of stuff. [TR Mage]
Aoirlinna: Randomizer. [DW Paladin]
Laurelei: I wanted to call her Lorelai, after the pokémon trainer. No, I'm not particularly fond of pokémon, I just liked the name, but it was taken. [BE Paladin]
Garukaa (originally Garuka, someone had my name when I switched servers): Randomizer [OR Hunter]
Gythweld (currently a bank alt): Astyanax was taken. [UD Warrior]
Amiraya: Randomized "Ami" and tacked on some letters to it. [HU Warlock]
Sophine: Randomized until they stopped giving me ridiculous doubled letters. [DR Shaman]
Airesh: There actually is a joke behind this one. I roleplay on IRC, and one of the characters my friends plays had a fiancée he left behind, and worried about her. My friend basically asked me to come up with something, so I could play opposite that character. So, I came up with Airesh Gladerunner. Her name is pronounced "Irish", as a tribute to the character Rocko from Undergrads. "And hookers!" "No, Rocko. No hookers." "Irish..." [BE Priest]

And finally, for when WotLK comes out:

Midnightsong: Now, again, I roleplay on IRC, and I needed to play a death knight. I was given the name "Chorus at Midnight", and a vague backstory, and wound up working up something more elaborate and cool. Because of IRC's character restrictions, her name was Midnight_Chorus. Unfortunately, between name length restrictions, and the fact I can't take "Midnight", "Abigail" or "Abby" (her human name was Abigail), I went with Midnightsong. It sounds good. [HU Deathknight]

i don't have badass meanings behind my names, but i really like some of the names i come up with.

Ortensia (human paladin) - i found it on a name site, lol. it's a flower i do believe. the only character with a name that means something.

Sergity: level 30ish human mage
Valevica: a great warlock name i keep making placeholders for, lol.
Zepedri: 20ish draenei priest
Veva: level 30? draenei shaman

those are my favorites. :)

Trilliad (NElf Hunter) - I wanted to name my first character, a Hunter with herbalism, Trillium, which is a local endangered flower. It was already taken on the server, so I just played with the letters a bit.

Tocal (Dwarf Paladin) - He is named after a Dwarf Paladin D&D character I had. The name itself was one of those "it sounded good" combinations of letters that I came up with during a character creation session for that D&D game. Googling it just now, though, I see there is a Tocal College in Australia. I guess my Dwarf talks with both a Scottish and an Aussie accent. That'll confuse them in Ironforge.

Togglebolt (Gnome Warlock) - Since I knew my gnome would be an engineer, I asked someone what was one of the more unusual tools or pieces of hardware they had. The toggle bolt was one of them, and since my first two characters both had names starting with the letter T, it seemed like a good choice. A toggle bolt looks like this.

- Mesuari (Tauren Druid) - gibberish! I honestly never expected this guy to be my main, but he is.
- Blota (Troll Priest) - means "to bleed", in reference to old priestly medicinal tactics of bleeding out sicknesses
- Anuaka (Undead Warrior) - I believe this is a name of a tribe, I found it by link-hopping from the wikipedia entry for Horde
- Kalkua (Blood Elf Warlock) - Based on "kalku" which means a witch or shaman, often an evil one
- Salii (Blood Elf Paladin) - A priesthood that honored Mars (the God of War), often dressed in warlike clothing
- Kyzyl (Tauren Shaman) - A city in Russia, I just love the spelling
- Zeethia (Troll Hunter) - The name of my good friend's old warlock. It has a neat sound to it and he suggested I use it for my hunter. She's now kind of my new main hehe. (& Deimos, the god of dread, as her ghostsaber)
- Zacynthra (Blood Elf Mage) - Zacynthrus is the ancient name of an island between Greece and Egypt in the time of Cleopatra. I loved the spelling, so I kept it.
- Soleus (Blood Elf Rogue) - Has something to do with a bone in the leg used for running, if I remember correctly.
- Fiski (Undead Warrior) - Somehow related to "fishy" in Finnish, I think.

...I overthink my names a bit. My guildies make fun of me for it. They usually just say "Mes's (Class)".

Sidekick (gnome lock): I rolled her to run with my ex boyfriend. We were going to duo two locks on pvp. Got to 58 and now she's sitting there.

Warszaw (Priest) - I'm a Joy Division fan (and I enjoy getting random whispers from Eastern Europeans)
Goodall (Hunter) - She looks like Jane Goodall and was going to have a gorilla as a pet as that was the closest thing to a chimp.
Ripwind (Druid) - Closest I could come to a fart joke on a RP realm without getting reported.
Fourrse (Paladin) - 4-rse = Arse (Yes, I'm so mature)

I miss my old MC raids sometimes, the MT was Tomjones and the puller was Jellyman. Nothing better than hearing a deadpan German accent saying "Keep Tomjones up, heals on Jellyman".

A lot of the names I come up with are pretty random. I'll think of what letter I want the name to start with and try combining it with different sounds until it sounds right. Either that or I'll play with the random name generator until I find something interesting and adapt it to what sounds right. But there are a few that had more than that behind them.

Drekhira (Draenei priest) - This was actually the name of my very first WoW character, and it's been the name of two or three others since her deletion, lol. I kinda named her after the daughter of a guitarist I was fangirling over constantly. While the fangirling over him died down, I still love the name.

Kleineteufel (Gnome rogue) - German for "little demon" or "little devil." I thought it fitting for that particular race/class combo.

Morgenrot (Blood Elf mage) - German for "sunrise." Somehow, it just fit for a fire mage; and the color scheme that runs with most Blood Elves fit as well.

Mesner (Draenei hunter) - I screwed up on this one. I MEANT to name her "Messer" which is German for "knife." I got her to level 29 before I realized that I'd given her the wrong name. Mesner IS a German word, though; it means "sacristan," which (as I understand) is a person who takes care of a sacristy, which wikipedia defines as "a room for keeping vestments (such as the cassock and chasuble) and other church furnishings, sacred vessels, and parish records." So it would have fit a priest better in the long run. Oh well.

Jenkaa (Dwarf paladin) - Named after a song I like, "Mr. Jenka."

Banhammer (Blood Elf paladin) - Come on. Paladin...hammer...I HAD to do it. :P

Xella (NE druid, BE paladin, Troll shaman, NE priest, Troll priest}: My namesake online; I've been Xella (or Xellandria) since seventh grade, in one form or another. Before that I think I was Acirema or Liantha, and before that I had no internet psuedonym. The character Xella as she stands in BA (the webcomic that I neglect for WoW :P) is most definitely a support class/healer-type, and when I rolled Xella (the druid), the resto tree was really the only solid tree available. She also (usually) has ears, hence the NE/BE/Troll theme, heh.
Xellandria (Troll shaman, BE warlock, NE priest x2, Draenei priest): See above, heh. Full name is Xellandria Dys'daera (chosen because the initials then work out to be "XD"), but I usually move onto other names before I name characters Dysdaera.
Xellie (Dwarf priest): Another deritive, but not one I'm particularly happy about (Xellie was the nickname I got from some friends who now hate me in the face). Fitting that she's also my only dwarf, since I'm not a huge fan of dwarves, heh =/ (females are way better than males tho)
Basanti (NE warrior, NE hunter): The name of a very minor character in BA, as well as the main character of Shadows, which was a full-fledged one-off comic I was working on a few years ago for [info]nanomango. Basanti was actually my first character in beta and on live, for whatever reason.
Lynnlita (Human mage): My middle name + the "fake" middle name I took upon myself a long time ago, as well as the name of a character in a story an old friend of mine was writing (see above re: hates me in the face)
Zenbi (Draenei warrior): "Beautiful Goodness" or something o.O I dunno, it sounded neat and I liked it enough that I could stick with it for my new main.
Alanya (BE priest, BE warlock, BE mage): Character in BA, she's on the "bad side," though not by choice. Alanyas on RP servers are usually nothing like the original Alanya though :P
Dandl (BE rogue, BE hunter): Another BA character, he's on Alanya's team. The BA Dandl and the WoW Dandl actually match up pretty well, personality-wise (Dandl's like how most people make male BE out to be, cocky and self-assured), with one exception... BA-Dandl hates magic and won't touch the stuff. Lawl.

Oh god, too wordy D: must double comment!

Appelachiana (Tauren druid, Tauren hunter): Name of one of the main characters in HB, who was actually created before WoW but ended up looking a lot like female tauren anyways. Meh, I'm not complaining.
Doktha (Orc warrior): Orc females look so hot in Might. This was actually going to be the name of my lock, but it was taken on the RP server I was trying to roll on, so I ended up rolling her as warrior elsewhere.
Dokthra (Orc warlock): Twin sister to the warrior (though the warriors' only level 12 and the lock's 40, kek). Doktha/Dokthra was really the only orcish-sounding name I could come up with at the time, heh.
Koala (Gnome warrior): I forget his "real" RP name, but everyone calls him Koala anyway, because he thinks he's a druid stuck in bear form (and gnome bear form would totally be a koala... no ifs, ands, or buts!)
Vaingloria (Undead mage): Rolled to keep my father company while he tried leveling his warlock, her schpiel was that she was constantly frustrated about how she couldn't have "nice things" (ripped elbows/knees on all her clothing) :P Came from "Vainglory Opera," which was playing on iTunes at the time, and also the whole "Vain" thing from her personality.
Hydaen (Draenei pally): The name of a character that appears both in BA and in DR, a novel I was attempting to write one year. One of these years I'll sit down and try to NaNoWriMo it, but there's this giant jump from "beginning of story" to "climax of story" that I still can't figure out.
Epadoa (Draenei shaman): Epadoa is the second-in-command of Attaroa's "Wolf Women" in what I consider to be the last book (book 4) in the six-book "Earth's Children" series by Jean M. Auel. I've always liked the name, and it seemed to fit pretty well for a "Wolf Woman" :P
Myself (Human pally): My bank alt. It felt right to send all my shit to myself, kek. Yourself was, unfortunately, taken :( (that would have been awesome though, ganking horde would /spit and they'd spit on themselves, kekkekek)
Disenchanted (Human rogue): Disenchanted is the name of of the BE shaman in my guild's DKP database, for when loot rots. I mentioned on vent about a week ago "god it's gonna suck if we ever get an applicant whose name is Disenchanted," and then someone tried friending DE, and found out it wasn't taken... I alt-F4ed (we were in the middle of a pull in TK, rofl), opened the game back up, and grabbed it before anyone else could :P
Buckettius (BE hunter, UD warrior): The name of the fake first boss of BucketLand (the 25-man raid zone in Nagrand), which I used as an example when designing our DKP system. Plans are to get them both to 35ish so they can use all the gear that the real Buckettius wears, and do a crazy-gimp machinma-esque thing (gimp because I don't currently have the capability to record out-of-game, heh)

(this only includes alts that are level 10 or above, and that are listed on servers that Blizzard says I have characters on, so some may be missing :x I alt a lot, rofl)

Sechet (belf paladin): I forget what it means. Snagged from my "readers digest character naming guide".
Jarreth (belf warlock): full name, Jarreth Stardust. Because he reminds me of the babe. (what babe?) The babe with the power. (what power?) The power of voodoo. (who do?) You do! (do what?) Remind me of the babe!

Rose(Human Mage) -formally known as BlakRose, which has been my online persona for 11 years now.. a dear friend gave me the name back when I first came on the internet, and its stuck ever since.

Jhudora(Human Paladin) -I got this name from Neopets, something that I was really into before I got into World of Warcraft, my husband has a character with a neopets name as well to go along with the Villian theme.. hehe

Tzula(Nelf Druid) - This was named after one of my Dungeon and Dragon characters.. a completely random name I picked, that stuck and I thought it was fitting for my druid.. so I took it and ran!

Moonlyte(Draenei Priest) -I love the Moon and I love that spelling of Lyte.. so I put them together and got her name. Its rather fitting, I think.

Monne(Draenei Warrior) - This one was randomized through the WoW name generator thing. I liked it, its cute!

Sunstrike (Draenei Hunter) - I thought it was fitting.. she used to have a dragonhawk pet whose colors matched her name, but I have "The Rake" atm.. so pretty!

Faela - night elf warrior. I think I might have accidentally stolen it from Sharn City of Towers. I just thought it sounded cool. But most of my alts now are Fae-suffix (Faevia, Faerix, Faeran, Faeruil) based on this name.

Miyva - night elf hunter. A corruption of Maeiv that my ex-boyfriend came up with. I really hate it but she was my first 70. :P

Celeste - draenei paladin. Means 'from the heavens' and also 'sky blue' in some languages - extremely appropriate. :)

Saevra - undead lock. Based on Savra Queen of the Golgari from MtG:Ravnica.

Please note that most of these are (deleted) alts.

Lúthien: Night Elf Druid. A random name I got from this generator. It just seemed pretty, and rather fitting. :3

Allure: Blood Elf Warlock. I rolled her on a roleplay server, and wanted a 'real' word, yet one which could (at a push) pass as a name. I settled on Allure, which later went on to fit with her personality and back story. (Not to mention her minion. ;D)

Vyra: Night Elf Rogue. Actually a typo, as she was intended to be named 'Zyra', an altered spelling of the villain from The Lion King II. 'Vyra' ended up sticking, though - and she's the toon I met my beloved on. (:

Liar: Blood Elf Paladin. What can I say, I'm a sucker for dictionary words! Since she was rolled on a normal server, I didn't have to worry about it being name-like. It just had to sound awesome. I think she was pretty passable as awesome.. Maybe.

Amarah: Human Priest. Created on a roleplay server to be a counterpart for my boyfriend's (ex-)main toon. She was a Scarlet, so I adopted the surname 'Whitemane' - seemed to be a pretty kickass name, even if I do say so myself.

Acid: Gnome Warlock. Given all the corruption and so on, I thought of the word 'corrosive'.. that soon lead me to 'Acid'. Which, surprisingly, wasn't taken. She was abandoned at level 8, however - I only really rolled her as a joke with some friends. :3

Sukii: Night Elf Druid. My current main, it just sounded pretty. I wanted something simple yet cute, and something I wouldn't get bored of.. I think I found it in that name. ^^

Cruelrouge: Blood Elf Rogue. An old joke with some guys I used to play with - the five of us rolled alts on a PVP server (taking care to include 'rouge' in the name,) then at level 1 ran to Orgrimmar in search of a guild charter. We actually got the guild made (Ready Steady Rouge - XD!), kicked the people who'd signed, then promptly logged off. That signified the end of Cruelrouge, kek.
