Men, Women, and Warcraft
This is something I've been curious about for a while and I figure this would be a great place to get some statistics. The question is, Ladies and Gentlemen, when you log onto WoW do you play as a male or female? If you play several characters, which do you play more?

Poll #1060620 Men, Women, and Warcraft
Open to: All, results viewable to: All

When you play WoW, what sex do you play as?

View Answers

I'm a male and I play as a female.
49 (12.9%)

I'm a male and I play as a male.
71 (18.7%)

I'm a female and I play as a male.
27 (7.1%)

I'm a female and I play as a female.
232 (61.2%)

I'm really curious about the results. I'm a woman and my main is a female human mage and I'm always a little surprised when people will address me as if I were a man, i.e., in battle seeing "protect him!" or "wait until he gets here" in reference to my female character. Really, guys, are you still that surprised to find that girls enjoy gaming? Personally, I much prefer playing female characters because it’s much easier for me to feel connected to them.

Likewise however, I have one male friend who always plays as a female and when I asked him way he basically said, "when you commit to a game you're going to be staring at someone's ass for hours and hours. Might as well be a good one." ;)

So what do you all think?

Those of you who play as the opposite sex, what are your reasons?

After my horror in dancing with my female night elf, I only play characters based on whether or not I like the dance.

My main is a male orc.

Male, play as both. My main is male, but my female alts out-number my male characters by far.

Female, because the male models are all ridiculous looking for the most part. I was going to play a Blood Elf male but then everyone bitched that they were too thin and they beefcaked them out too. Meh.

My cisgendered boyfriend plays a female undead rogue, but not for the commonly cited ass-staring reason. Most of his D&D characters have been female, too- I think he just finds females more interesting and identifies with them more, for whatever reason. I like it =)

I hate it when people complain about people like him, though- forcing people into narrowly defined gender roles is uncool!

I play females -- despite that I genderbend with skill and awesomeness in roleplaying and other venues.

It's mostly an aesthetic choice. The Undead have awesome animations (Especially undead rogues!), the blood elves are -- well, not my twiggy type, and the orcs are what I would be if I could get myself to be athletic. Well, maybe a little less bulky, but still. Tauren women are nicely shapely, and ...actually, trolls are the only ones who I just sigh at physically. The 'Supermodel' body type doesn't do it for me. (Doesn't stop me from playing the two I have, but...)

My main is a female, but my alts are both male and I've actually grown to like the male characters better. I think it's the sounds- while in combat, manly grunting > breathy little gasps/squeaks.

I'm female and my first character was a female. My second was a male. Frankly I just thought the gnome males were cute, and the females looked too squeaky, and if I'm going to spend days playing a character, I want to play something I think is cute. I don't think of my characters as "me", so I don't see any problem with any cross-gender playing :)

My main is a Human Male, my most oft-played alts are a female Blood Elf and Smurf.

I generally just go with whichever one I think looks cool at character creation time.

I will say thought, that it is silly to imply any sort of gender identity issue with folks who play one sex over the other, because the same could be said of any author who ever wrote a different gendered character, which is silly.

I also think it would be less pervasive if there were more options on designing how your character looks.

"when you commit to a game you're going to be staring at someone's ass for hours and hours. Might as well be a good one."

Oddly enough, this is the given reason as to why Lara Croft looks the way she does. Developers thought staring at a hot ass made debugging the game a lot more tolerable.

I don't care what gender my characters are, I just pick whatever fits the moment.

I'm a female, I play female characters. And thats purely for the aesthetics, I wouldn't want to look at a bulky shouldered male for hours at a time, I'd rather look at curves and flirt a lot. But I'm just that kinda girl, lol

I am a lady and I have always played a lady.. I'll be damned if I am going to be thought of as a man :P
Actually, I always take issue with men playing women, mostly because I've ran into a few that refused to admit they were male when asked. Thati s most frustrating. When I first met the father of my children I was 'warned' away from his 'female' friend. (I met him in Diablo), it was so odd to be warned away from this dudes friend, and then it turns out, Danielle was really Daniel. Oh my.

i'm a female and i play female characters.

i tried playing as a male a couple of times, but i just couldn't get into it. i guess because i like to use my character as a slight projection of myself, i connect better with a female.

My main: male nelf druid.
My second 70: male dwarf paladin.
My third 70: female nelf hunter.
62 warrior: female dwarf warrior.

Draw your own conclusions... I have several female Draenei after that, mostly because Draenei females are cute.

I'm male and mostly play women, but that's only because the male character models are so totally awful for the most part. The only males that aren't frightening to me are belfs, trolls, and tauren. Since I mostly play Alliance... Well, you do the math. If Blizz's art department knew how to draw attractive males, then I'd be playing males 100% of the time. I'd MUCH rather be staring at a hot guy's ass all day, thankyouverymuch. :P
