Live & Learn

A year ago, when a friend invited me to play on his PvP server with him and I realized I couldn't have both an Alliance and a Horde character on the same server, I thought that was weird. I figured, from my experience on a PvE server, that it was probably so you couldn't log onto your Horde-level-one character, see where they were going to attack or what BG they were going to start (this was back when there wasn't cross-realm battlegrounds), then hop on your Alliance-level-sixty character to wreak havoc.

Then I started a Blood Elf on a PvP server and got her to level twenty-one. I now am trying to quest around Tarren Mill and having only ever gotten Alliance characters that high before am not sure just where everything is. What I have learned really is the TRUE reason why you can't have Alliance & Horde on the same PvP server:

Because if I could have made a level one character to tell the LEVEL 70 PALADIN who was ganking me & my level twenty-one to twenty-three group in Durnholde Keep what mother-loving JERK he was, I WOULD HAVE.

And I am not normally a trash-talking person. But seriously, dude: get a life. :P

Erm, I think the cross-faction trash talking is one of the many reasons you can't have both factions on a PVP server.

But yeah. *hands you a cookie*

My greatest joy in-game currently is heading to SS. I have a bunch of level 40ish guildies who are constantly getting camped by the level 70 hordies there (who, I have no doubt, are there because level 40 alliance were camping the level 20 horde, heh). Coming to kill the camper is great, especially when I can round up a few more guildies.

Your reaction is exactly why people do gank lowbies. They want you to get all ruffled about it. :P

Oh yeah. You'll find lots of similar joyful experiences at the hillsbrad farm.

It got to the point where I would run to my corpse, rez and sit down. He'd gank me anyway... I think that character is still logged off dead in hillsbrad...

And now you know why I no longer play on a PvP server.

Ganking is the only reason to roll on a PvP server.

I only play PvP servers. So PvP-server oriented am I, I didn't even know you could roll both factions on a different type of server! Boy do I feel like a noob.
I hate Hillsbrad on my 24 lock. Not only do I aggro EVERY DARNED BEAR (or lion) within 3 feet of my character, the constant ganking really makes me burn out. So what do I do? Camp my 70 mage in the vicinity of course! :)
As much as I hate being ganked and ganking, getting revenge on the level 30-50 that killed me is pure and sweet :) Mind you I only ever kill the opposite faction if they're already killing someone else or if they've killed my alt.
I might try out that non-PvP server thing, though.
This post was much longer than previously anticipated :/

like the previous commenter, i didn't even realize for the longest time that you could roll both on a non-pvp server (my friends, when i started, were all on pvp servers, so off i went).

i hate tarren mill more than i do stv. at least in the latter sometimes it'll be people my own level and i have a fighting chance.

I really never had many problems in Hillsbrad on my horde when I was leveling him on a PVP server. Now STV on the otherhand...and I was leveling my tauren when ZG first came out so it was pretty intense haha Normally if someone wouldn't leave me alone I would hop off that character and get on my main who's on a PVE server and just chill. Either that or stay dead, wait at my corpse, and pop in a movie, play DS, or do homework. Use the opportunity to be productive, it helps! And you don't get very worked up about getting ganked since you're not focusing on random bored 70 alliance/horde killing you. Most people got pretty bored very fast since I wouldn't rez more than twice. If they wanted to corpse camp me while I watch a 2 hour movie they were more than welcome to haha

That's sort of how I feel about it.

Look! The productivity of the PVP server users to the PVE server users is much higher now! XD

which to me is a bit ironic... On the PvE server I'm on there are a few horde guilds who like to clear out Southshore on a regular basis, but that's probably what they do between AV bouts.

I was surprised how many alliance are left over to gank the other zones after they've set up "Camp Grief" out in front of Karazhan.

Having played both sides, it's been my experience that the horde will kill me once and move on, but the Alliance gankers for some reason love love love to camp.

I suppose it could be worse, you could be getting ganked by mobs that looked like monsters, but were actually controlled by players. (I've been playing lotro a lot lately) ;-)

Hmm, I have experienced the opposite (except in front of Kara, where it's usually alliance camping). I switched back to horde 3-4 months ago, and in that time I haven't been camped, even once. Sure, I have seen the same shaman ganking in Hillsbrad every time I've been there, but she has never killed me more than once per encounter. On my alliance characters, there were several dozen times where I was camped for more than 30 minutes by the same person/group of people. Of course, this may have just been the server as we had at least one horde guild that didn't do a whole lot other than ride around in groups of 10++ and completely take over instances or alliance towns for literally up to 12 hours at a time.

This is why my hunter on a PVP server did every. Single. Quest. In the barrens and then moved to thousand needles after doing a couple of intro quests in hillsbrad.

Low pop areas FTW :D

Yeah, I generally hit TM fairly late (25 ish?). I do Stonetalon and the Ashenvale stuff around Splintertree first. The few extra levels dont mean much in stopping you from getting ganked, but they do mean you finish the quests faster.

Imo after the second or third death you should hearth and go check out other zones. Southern Barrens, Stonetalon, Ashenvale and Thousand Needles are all nice this time of year...

The best part is when you get upset about it the knuckleheads respond with "lrn2ply noob gtfo pvp and stop QQing." Yes, because slaughtering one person over and over again for hours, even when they don't even try to fight back anymore, is the ideal PvP setting.

Ah PvP servers. I have a love hate relationship with them. But don't worry you learn real fast where it's relatively safe to lvl and where the gankers tend to hang out. The Tarren Mill/Southshore area just happens to be one of them. You're much better off lvling out in 1k needles. Questing out in Tarren Mill is almost a waste of time unless you do it in the off hours of your server.

On the bright side though, in my pre-lvl 60/70 days. It was a very nice incentive and inspiration to lvl much faster than I normally would so I could one day take revenge >=D
