No pictures today. Though I did take some, they weren't terribly exciting. So instead: a link!

Insults - they just don't make them as they used to.

And the Kitchen Sink Too is the blog of a Peace Corps volunteer I know through my sister. He's been in Morocco for about the last two years, and is leaving soon. He's only just recently started turning his pages-long emails into blog posts. He's a little...intense...in spots, but he has some very funny insights on life in the Peace Corps in general and Morocco in specific. His entry on transportation is not to be missed:

Take the other day, for instance. I took a taxi ride home, though it may not be the kind of taxi that you are imagining. In a broken down Jalopy of a station wagon, roughly the size of a Subaru Outback, sat 11 men (10 Berbers and your intrepid correspondent) packed tightly enough to bleed into each other’s wounds. Two guys sat in the driver’s seat and took turns steering, and sometimes agreed that two drivers operating the vehicle in tandem was far safer. On the roof there were two full grain sacs, several duffel bags and a bundle of hay, on top of which three more blokes laid down, clutching firmly to a rickety aluminum rack as we drove a serpentine mountain pass road. It looked more like a circa-1955 fraternity stunt than a viable mode of transport. But I was not concerned – anything with four wheels and a motor is a joy ride these days – and after two years of Morocco, I was not particularly phased either. Nor was I disquieted by the sound of the undercarriage moaning like the bow of a pilgrim’s ship navigating gale force winds. I was simply grateful that the Berber next to me knew to cough into his hands rather than share his delightful affliction with us all.

And if his prose isn't enough, he's a fantastic photographer. I think he should put a book together when he gets back.

Hey Shell,

What do you get when you have 100 bunnies in a line and 99 of them take a step back?

A receding hare-line.

At least Shell and I are in the same time zone. It's still Thursday!

And I have pictures of my cat. He's fuzzy. You can't find fault in that.

Sadly though, he's not actually that photogenic (vaguely photo heavy) )

[info]storydivagirl: some fun links for you today...

So hi, I'm tommygirl! I am here this evening to entertain you with a few links and such! If that doesn't work, I am willing to do a tap dance and juggle - but please don't let that get out. I really don't want EVERYONE following me around, begging me to do such a wonderful feat for them too.

1) Who can resist funny cat photos? I'm personally fond of the first one.

2) Having a stressful day? Check out unwind radio with its relaxation music!

3) Nick Mamatas has posted his entire novel online for people to read - Move Under Ground - if you're looking for something new without having to deal with the library or bookstores.

4) Finally, an interesting and funny entry on how nerds make dessert

Enjoy and have a great weekend!

[info]celli: your news for the day

Shell,

Here's some news items you may not have heard of:

Switzerland Invades Liechtenstein - Accidentally

A routine training exercise almost turned into a diplomatic incident when a company of Swiss soldiers, marching in the night, got lost and wandered into neighouring Liechtenstein.

170 Swiss infantry soldiers penetrated as far as two kilometres into Liechtenstein before they realised their error and went back to Switzerland. Officials from both sides played down the incident.

Interior ministry spokesman Markus Amman said nobody in Liechtenstein had even noticed the soldiers. "It's not like they stormed over here with attack helicopters or something," he said. Liechtenstein has no army.

...so if you got invaded and nobody noticed, did the tree fall in the forest? I dunno.

Topless wife photo ends man's pole protest

A German man who spent 10 days in a self-made box atop a 72-foot-tall pole to protest a looming jail term was lured off his perch by his wife -- who sent up a topless picture of herself in his lunch box.

Fred Gregor, 45, was bidding to have his 15-month conviction for fraud overturned by squatting in his tiny cubicle atop a converted television mast. He told Reuters in a telephone interview last week that he wanted a new trial.

His wife Susanne, 25, backed his protest until the former stripper and mother of their five children decided she had had enough.

There's a joke here about poles and strippers. I'll let Jay Leno come up with it, though.

Punctuality drive to combat tardiness

As police and fire truck sirens wailed at noon Thursday to mark the start of the campaign, President Alan Garcia sounded a bell, chiming with gongs of Lima's cathedral towers looming overhead.

"(We must) stop this horrible, pitiful, disastrous custom of failing to be punctual," he intoned in a speech, inveighing against the $5 billion in annual economic damage caused, he said, by being late.

...Punctuality program organizers said the campaign will feature government radio and television spots reinforced by posters plastered in offices and highway billboards, all reminding Peruvians of their timely duties.

Note to self: NEVER move to Peru. It'd be like living in a country where the entire government was made up of my grandmother.

And, just for fun, here's a picture of Hugh Grant standing on a giant piano.

Yaaay, it's Thursday! A whole week of getting better behind you!

My original plans fell through and will have to wait, but in the meantime:

This is something I think you would enjoy. In fact, I'd be extra surprised if you weren't already a big fan. But just in case!

Here's a link to a YouTube clip of Quite Interesting The rest of the episode should be along the side there.

There was a point where you could watch pretty much the entire run of the show on YouTube, but I think one of the users that had a lot of the stuff got suspended. Alas! (But there is still BitTorrent, if you're feeling devious).
