The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young.  GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.

The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFEtm campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution

Fill out the survey at:  www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student.

While we greatly appreciate the interest taken in GENIUS by students, staff and faculty at academic institutions outside of the United States, at this time GENIUS is only able to track schools based in the United States.

    Hey ladies =D

My personal training director said it was time for me to get a bio up on the "wall of trainers" at work, so last night my hubby took pix of me lifting...which ended up having to be posed because I was giggling too much during my real workout for any good shots! haha Enjoy!

    Self-promotion: Physical Feminist blog
I tend to hate doing this sort of thing but:

I have FINALLY, after about a year or so, started a Physical Feminist blog at http://caithream.blogspot.com/

While there may be some mirroring here in my social blogs, in [info]womenofstrength and the various Sarah Connor Charm School locations, I wanted something happening on the topic of Physical Feminism that might be noticed by those who look down their noses at social networking blogging places. ~;p And, well, where I might be inspired to be a bit more formal...but probably not much. Now that it is started, I hope to have something going regularly there. We'll see how that works out.

Cross-posted at my LJ, [info]womenofstrength, [info]sccharmschool and my blogs at Tribe, MySpace and the MySpace and Facebook SCCS groups as I figured some might want to know.

Wins Texas State 1A Team Title: by Herself
    May 12, 2008

    Richardson Wins State Title Alone

    Associated Press
    Special to Rivals High

AUSTIN, Texas -- Bonnie Richardson ran. She threw. She jumped.

And when it was time to hand out the team trophies, Richardson accepted the 1A team championship for Rochelle High School -- by herself.

Bonnie Richardson of Rochelle High School scored 42 team points to win the Texas 1A track title.

Richardson was the only Rochelle athlete to qualify for the state meet and stunningly won the team title. University Interscholastic League officials said it was the first time they can remember a single athlete winning a girls' team title.

It's happened before on the boys' side, but not since former Baylor Bear and Pittsburgh Steeler Frank Pollard did it for Meridian High School in the 1970s, said UIL Athletics Director Charles Breithaupt.
    ...
Richardson's title march began with field events on Friday when she won the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), placed second in the long jump (18-7) and was third in the discus (121-0).

On Saturday, she won the 200 meters in 25.03 seconds and nearly pulled off a huge upset in the 100 before finishing second (12.19) to defending champion Kendra Coleman of Santa Anna. Richardson, a junior, earned a total of 42 team points to edge team runner-up Chilton (36).

SELF-DEFENSE. Fierce Love: Heart of the Female Warrior
Melissa Soalt, a.k.a. Dr. Ruthless, is a feminist, former psychotherapist, black belt expert, veteran self-defense instructor and lecturer. (For reference, I have at home her two-videocassette series, Fierce and Female, videos.) She has many other articles and thoughts about surviving and understanding violence and general self-defense tactics (mental and physical) and believe that her site is great to review for her resources.

Meanwhile, here are excerpts from one of her essays.

NOTES, DISCLAIMERS: many may not agree with everything she says. I'm uncertain about some parts, but on the whole, I think she speaks from a deep understanding of the impact of violence and she's passionately sincere.

    Selected excerpts under lj-cut )

    For the complete essay: http://www.dr-ruthless.com/articles/frcelov.htm
The full essay includes a few descriptions of acts of violence (of victims against their attackers) in parts of the actual essay, not excerpted here.

National Transgender Day of Remembrance 2007 List of the Dead
I apologize to those who have complained about my lack of lj-cut's. Occasionally, I feel the abuse to ya'll's friends pages warranted. This is one of those times. Other times, I'm just a rude idiot. This is not one of those times. Please forgive me.

Many or most of you probably already know this, but tomorrow, November
20, is the National (in the U.S.) Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day
chosen in remembrance of a transwoman who was killed (Rita Hester) in
order for us all to remember those throughout the year who have been
killed or died because of their gender identity or presentation.

Every year, I post the list of that year's dead, that their names might
be known, where possible, and they might be remembered, even if for
just one day. The Greco-Romans believed that immortality was to be found
in the memory of those still living and this was why they considered a
braggart nature a heroic virtue. Let us thus remember these victims,
who have historically suffered great mutilations in the course of their
murder, as if their killers were trying to erase them from the
    photograph of existence.

All the victims from all years past may be found on
    www.rememberingourdead.com.

After the list of the dead follows the details of the San Jose Day of
Remembbrance which I will be attending. If you live in the area of
Silicon Valley, please come. If not, I beg of you to find out where and
when the nearest remembrance is. Many of the dead were alone when they
died, and many believed they would always be alone even while they
lived. Let not their loneliness continue into the chill after death. Let
them be warmed by the fire of our tears, our thoughts, and our prayers.

Whichever of the alphabet soup you are (LGBTQQIA -- Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer, Intersex, or Ally -- the last
meaning "we invite straight, cisgendered (non-trans) folk too"), please do
    this for them.

Lacking a specific formula as yet, I merely call upon the mup gods to
    look, read, and remember:
Hermaphroditus, look at the names of the dead.
Ardhanarisvara, read the names of the dead.
Melek Ta'us, remember the names of the dead.
Eris, look at the names of the dead.
Antinous, read the names of the dead.
Hoor-paar-kraat, remember the names of the dead.
Tlazolteotl, look at the names of the dead.
Azathoth, look at the names of the dead.
Pomba-Gira, read the names of the dead.
Inanna, remember the names of the dead.

    Yo Ho Ho, etc.
This week, I 'ave been mostly readin' David Cordingly's Life Among The Pirates, and lo and behold, there's a chapter devoted to women pirates (and, for good measure, Pirates' Women). it follows in some depth, the lives of two women who became pirates - and masqueraded as men to do so (at a time when it was largely a complete no-no to have women on board pirate ships). Their stories, such as we have them, are rather astounding, so I thought I'd share...Enjoy!

     here's what my "question" is:

at the crucial soul searching time of your life, what were great words of advice that helped you through as a young woman trying to find and DEfine herself? and just to be curios- how old were you?

    Newbie
    Hello everyone,

I used to have a livejournal but deleted it due to the 6 apart stuff but started one here specifically dealing with my unusual relationship dynamic.  It was the only place that had a community supporting friends and family of a transgendered person.

A little over a month ago, some changes that had been taking place over the course of years were suddenly thrust into overdrive and now I find myself in a relationship that no longer fits any standard mold.

Over the last... oh 15 years or so, I have been dating men but way more attracted to women.  For reasons I don't feel I need to go into, I was terrified of this part of myself and compromised who I was in order to blend in... the path of least resistance I suppose.  In the meantime, I was dating a man who also knew that he was the last man I'd ever date.  I even started ID'ing as gay even though he and I were together.  Some people have been open-minded about it and others not so much.

He began exhibiting behavior that had me scared that he was really gay but denying it.  It was almost like he was living a secret life outside of our relationship but one that was all online.  I finally confronted him and he admitted that he felt he was transgendered and was considering transitioning.  While I was shocked, I wasn't, if that makes any sense.  The parts of him I was attracted to were his typically female traits.  It was actually kind of validating for me in my own orientation.

Then I went to an all women's retreat.  I picked up an online friend from the airport, whom I had known maybe a year and a half.  She is gay and I knew that from the first time we met.  She wanted to go somewhere and when her original travel plans fell through she asked if she could come see me.  I didn't think much of it but over that weekend... wow.

Pandora's box was opened and there was no going back.  She and I instantly bonded and we hated being torn apart when it was time for her to go back home.  She cried the whole way home.  I was sullen and withdrawn when I went back home.  I loved my time with her.  It felt right and comfortable.  I talked to my bf about it and told him what happened.  I told him it made me wish I was poly because even though he's a man, I'm in love with his soul.  He agreed to a poly relationship and so did she, even though she'd never done it before.  Also they were both already friends because he met her through our online game too.

So over the next 3 weeks she and I kept up an exhaustingly intense relationship that was all online, on the phone and through text messages.  It was every moment we were awake that we were communicating.  I flew one way to where she was and we both drove back to my state and she's now living with us.

In that time, I have told my wonderful bf that while I'm in love with his soul, I cannot have sex with him anymore.  It was like something happened to me that weekend and I could no longer make myself.  I was on the edge of it already but that finalized it.  It has been difficult but neither of us want to be apart so we are redefining our relationship.  He can date others now.  We all three want to stay together and so far, for the most part, it has been peaceful and harmonious.  I am soooooo happy to be in this relationship.  It scares me how much I love her.  I can't believe I didn't do this a long time ago, but then I would have only met her had everything played out the way it did, in my life, so I have no regrets.

This journal is only about our relationship.  I'm not going to debate its validity or its worth.  I know there's a snowball's chance in hell that it will work out long term, but the thought of losing either of them feels like one of my limbs would be torn from me.  So if you want to friend me you can.  All my posts will be public, since I am choosing not to post pics or real life names.

    Thanks for your time.

    First female Beefeater
Just an interesting milestone. It's notable that women have never been banned from becoming Yeoman Warders, but until now few ever had made the 22 years in military service required to apply. It seems that there may be more women joining the ranks or at least will be eligible.

So what ever happened to the Sarah Connor Charm School?
Since the whole thing started that The Sarah Connor Chronicles might happen I've been lamenting that if the wrong actress played her, that is someone who is not a good fitness and preparedness role model, then so much for the Sarah Connor Charm School project. And, of course, the new actress is exactly as I had most feared. Too many in the future will come to see "Sarah Connor" as meaning as "skinny and trendy" rather than "strong and survivalist." What would "Sarah Connor Charm School" really stand for in a world where Lena Headey is what people think of when they here the name (unless, of course, they're into insipid European pop music, but we try to ignore HER altogether)?

But, I'm not good at that giving up thing. And the Charm School is something I've been putting off for 15 years now, I'm not going to stop putting it off just because of this!!!!

Yes, see it started as an idea for a simple ad for a parody 'zine. Then a more complicated ad. Then a website. A send up of "before and after" promos. Which also could actually serve as a real inspiration. Or something. But something always is more important to work on. And now it seemed to late...but....

So, here you have it [info]sccharmschool ....because when not actually working on a project starting an LJ for it is the funnist way to not work on it.

The community is for anyone who is interested in the SCCS project, male, female or other. Yes, we might actually discuss the upcoming website and future photo shoots. There may even be discussions of my dream of doing a women-only paint ball gathering or something, except that we're so damn far apart. But it's also a place to bitch about the TV show and remind ourselves that Linda Hamilton's portrayal is the only real Sarah Connor! We might also discuss fitness or preparedness or what have you. Or......

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/05/11/skynet_takes_control/

Please join if you believe that Linda Hamilton is the only real Sarah Connor. Lena Headey fans are welcome ONLY if they agree, as some have, that she is not right for the role. Although this may change depending on the interest in troll baiting our members might have.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles first photo
Well, all those who said "oh, she'll probably buff up" or some shit like that....here you go...I was right. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=19879

Fuck! Granted, the clothing and lighting may make her look even skinnier than she is (which, given how skinny she is in other photos of her bare arms, is difficult to imagine) but even if she's not that thin, what message does THAT give? They are pushing the idea, by using this photo, with this pose, with those arms of "see, Sarah Connor isn't buff and ugly like in the movie, it's okay, you don't have to feel threatened by a physically powerful woman in this show we're keeping her skinny, weak and helpless as women are supposed to be." It's disgusting.

Rumor has it that FOX announced that the pilot will air late May, but I've not been able to get a solid source on this. Only Wikipedia which vaguely gives Headey the credit and The Terminator Files which apparently got it from it's own forum members.

More and more I hope it never airs. Excuse me, I have to go work out.

First Woman Honored with Turing Award [Associated Press]
    Feb 21, 1:12 PM (ET)
    By BRIAN BERGSTEIN

One of the most prestigious prizes in computing, the $100,000 Turing Award, went to a woman Wednesday for the first time in the award's 40-year history.

Frances E. Allen, 75, was honored for her work at IBM Corp. on techniques for optimizing the performance of compilers, the programs that translate one computer language into another. This process is required to turn programming code into the binary zeros and ones actually read by a computer's colossal array of minuscule switches.

More Girls Take Part in High School Wresting [New York Times]
    By Tamar Lewin
    Published: 17 February 2007

UNCASVILLE, Conn. — The takedown came after all of 12 seconds.

Jessica Bennett, Montville High School’s 103-pound wrestler, waited until Rich Wood went down to try to grab her leg, then launched herself onto his back, and got him down to his knees. After a brief stalemate later in the match, Jessica, 15, lifted him off the ground and took him back to the mat, for more points.

At that, several of Rich’s teammates, from St. Bernard High School here, looked down at their feet. There is still some pain in watching a teammate being beaten by a girl — even a girl like Jessica, who has won 23 of her 35 matches this season.

Wrestling may be the ultimate contact sport, and it can be a startling sight, teenage boys grabbing girls’ thighs, girls straddling boys, boys riding girls’ backs and trying to flip them onto their backs. For the most part, girls who want to wrestle — and they are slowly moving into the mainstream — must practice with, and compete against, boys.

    Athletes Embrace Size, Rejecting Stereotypes
    The New York Times
    8 February 2007
    By Jere' Longman

NORMAN, Okla., Feb. 5 — The University of Oklahoma tells women’s basketball fans a lot about Courtney Paris, the Sooners’ 6-foot-4 center. They know that she ranks third in the country in scoring, second in rebounding and that her dream job is to be a novelist. That her best friend is her identical twin and teammate, Ashley Paris, and that her father, Bubba Paris, won three Super Bowls as a lineman for the San Francisco 49ers.

But one piece of information about Paris is not made public by the university: her weight.

The weights of male athletes are widely publicized by college teams, but 35 years after passage of the gender-equity legislation known as Title IX, and 25 seasons after the National Collegiate Athletic Association began sponsoring women’s basketball, the weights of amateur female athletes are almost never published, in basketball or any other sport.

Even as women are embracing their size and power, projecting the notion that a wide body can be a fit body, the idea of weighing female athletes is under vigorous debate. Some colleges weigh their basketball players regularly to guard against rapid weight loss or gain. Some weigh them infrequently, others not at all.

“It’s a sensitivity about eating disorders,” said Jody Conradt, the Hall of Fame coach who has led the Texas Longhorns for three decades. “We’re dealing with a population that is vulnerable because it’s a Type A personality, driven, the people that want to be perfectionists.”

    Video about weightlifting competitor girls
A fitness-blogger friend posted this video featuring female high school weightlifting competitors in his blog, and I thought you ladies might also find it inspiring. The quote about "they cry more" is a bit annoying, but the fit, strong athletes with the "I can do it" attitude totally makes up for it. Enjoy!
