Hey everyone, just thought I'd introduce myself.  I'm kinda new to this whole Livejournal thing, so bear with me.  I've always had a very strong interest in the Shinsengumi, although to be honest I cannot even remember what sparked it.  One day I hope to go to Japan and visit lots of Shinsengumi-related places, including the burial sites of many of the more prominent members.  Anyways, nice to be here! I look forward to being a part of this community! :D

Subject:English Translation of a Shinsengumi Novel
Security:Public

"Moe Yo Ken" -- the samurai epic chronicling the life of Hijikata Toshizou, the Vice-Captain of the Shinsengumi in the last days of the Tokugawa Period.

This book is full of romance, epic duels, and lots of history concerning the Bakumatsu, so if any of that is of interest to you, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Also, this book does not pull its punches, so be prepared for a darker, grittier Japan than you might be used to. Here's a sample from the first chapter:

As he made his way out of the main town, an acquaintance called out to him from the fields.
"Hey, Toshi, where are you going?"
    He didn't answer, though.
It's not like he could say that he was going to rape a woman.
Tonight was the Rokusha Myoujin Ceremony. In more colloquial terms, it was known as the Darkness Festival.
Toshizou's mission tonight was to take advantage of the darkness during the festival and sneak in. There, he would strip off the kimono of one of the girls visiting the shrine, push her down, and violate her. Then, he would take off his own yukata and lay it across the grass, moist with evening dew, to keep the woman from getting wet as she slept. The reason he was wearing a judo gi was for preparation in case a fight broke out between any male companions.
    Toshizou wasn't the only criminal.
That was the nature of the festival.

Hope you enjoy the story. Please leave a comment and let me know what you think.

From Tokyograph:

Satomi Ishihara to lead revival of Kohei Tsuka play
"Bakumatsu Junjouden," a popular play by dramatist Kohei Tsuka, is returning to the stage later this year with Tsuka directing. This is his first time directing it in 18 years.

The play, which was turned into a movie in 1991, portrays the Shinsengumi swordsman Okita Soji as actually being a woman. Satomi Ishihara will star in this role, previously played by Riho Makise for the film. Former Takarazuka top star Tsubasa Makoto will plays Sakamoto Ryoma.

Performances will be held at the Shinbashi Enbujo in August.

I recently found out about a Shinsengumi comedy called "Bakumatsu Jyunyouden" or "Bakumatsu Junjo Den". Does somebody here know about it? Or where I can find it?
Thanks a lot for reading this and for your help!!! ^____^

Subject:Shinsengumi Destinations!
Security:Public

Hello everyone,

My roommate and I are off to Japan in a week, and I'm hoping to hit up as many Shinsengumi-related sites as I can while we're there. I've been reading all your back posts and staring wistfully at everyone's beautiful pictures, but I wanted to ask formally if anyone has any 'must see' locations that they would recommend, as well as general directions on how to get to them? Our Japanese is very limited, unfortunately, and we're also concerned about what will actually be open to the public, since we'll be there over New Year's (December 26th - January 5th).

Any advice anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! ^_^

This one was filed in my Tokyo pictures - because that's where I decided I didn't have enough room in my suitcase to actually bring the bottle back with me and would have to settle fo a photo instead - but I got it at a small liquor store as we were zeroing in on Mibudera. The store also had a two-pack of SSG beer, one bottle with a photo of Kondo on the label, one with Hijikata. Besides the novelty value, this was also one of the best bottles of sake I've ever had, very smooth with a sort of soft fruity flavor to it.

Thank you for the comments; I'm glad you're enjoying the pictures!

I had the opportunity to visit Japan with some friends last month, and I made a point of visiting Mibudera. It felt a little odd praying to improve my Meiji-era Toyama Ryu swordsmanship at the home of the Tokugawa loyalists, but I had to get in a sword-prayer somewhere, and this seemed otherwise fitting enough.

Beware, lots of pictures behind the cut. All but the first two came from Mibu Temple - The Colonel was near the Fujiyama Internet Cafe (I think) in the Teramachi shopping arcade; my friends posing were photographed in front of a small temple tucked behind one side of a big courtyard in the middle of the arcade.

:D I know that it's probably a style faux pas to put Japanese kanji in, but I'll remedy that in the next chapter haha. I'm a bit busy for the night. XD

Hi all! Here's another part of the fic for anyone's who's still reading. ^^;;;; A few author's notes yet again. ^^;;

Kamuro: an Oiran's apprentices.

Handkercheifs and/or Fans: Oiran and Geisha would give these to those special clients that they thought they were special and really cared for. Granted I'm remembering this stuff correctly. ^^;;; Oh it has been such a long while since I've studied up on this hahahaha!

Well.... I hope this doesn't turn out too badly... It does have more character development in it I think... Though towards the end it does get a little dark I suppose... After all no one really knows what goes on in the Karyukai [Willow and flower world] of the geisha and the oiran... Enjoy!

HI~~ I'm brand new here. I was wondering if anyone could explain to me the difference in the colours of the shinsengumi's haori. I notice it seems to come in 3 main colours, blue with white mountains, black with white mountains, and tan/off-white with black mountains. I think I remember reading an explanation about this a long while back, but I've forgotten the details. I think there was some confusion in the kanji for asagi-iro ( 浅葱色 ) where it was sometiems written to mean tan, and sometimes blue.
Any advise?

Thank you very much!! <3

A few author's notes before you start.

Oiran: one of the highest class of prostitutes in Shimabara. She was very expensive and very popular until the rise of the geisha. The geisha that came around after were cheaper and more accessible to the common person. I don't really know when the Oiran's popularity ended and when the geisha became popular, but since Peace Maker mentions an oiran more [aka Akesato] than a geisha, then I'm playing it safe and using the oiran and the way she works.

Basically, she was a prostitute that knew the entertaining tricks of the geisha, her rise in the ranks usually depended on her beauty and character, and like the geisha, she was a popular muse of the writers, painters, and poets of the time. She also had the luxury of choosing her own lover. If she got famous enough and made the tayuu status, she could only then be patronized by the daimyo. To use her services, she had to be formally invited to a party or so. There were no casual visitors allowed.

A new friend who was editing this for me mentioned that Okita's behavior was quite "daring." I edited it to hopefully make it a little more understandable. Hopefully, I have not totally screwed up anyone's character. Now remember, I heart constructive critisms with logical reasoning, but if you're gonna be flaming me for the sake of flaming me, then I kindly ask you disregard this post. :D Enjoy!
