This case had reminded him of his time in Afghanistan and it had left him mentally exhausted.

The blonde climbed into bed, and lay there, nursing emotional and physcological wounds he thought he had buried when he had left the war zone, wounds that this case had brought bubbling to the surface, lava under his skin, lava in his heart.

Slowly, Colby’s mind wandered to the members of his team. First Don, then Megan, then Charlie and finally David.

When Colby’s tired, wounded mind rested on David, he smiled.

Even though they had experienced their differences, David could always be counted upon to make Colby feel… Well, Colby didn’t exactly know how to describe how David made him feel.

“You okay?”

Colby rolled over and was met with dark eyes, full of concern.

David.

Colby had almost forgotten that David was now his constant companion. He smiled sadly, sighed and shook his head. “I’ll be okay… Eventually.”

David didn’t believe him. “Come here.” He pulled Colby to him. “Don’t kid yourself. You know I’m here for you, no matter what.”

Colby rested against David’s powerful chest. “I know, I know.”

David smiled softly. “Then go to sleep, and we can talk about it in the morning, if you want to.”

“Thank you, David.” Colby’s eyes drifted shut and all to soon he was asleep.

I’m far away,

I’m safe with you.

You are here,

You are real.

Please don’t ever change,

Please don’t let me go.

The bombs go off,

While the bullets hail.

My mind cracks,

I feel so frail.

But I'm not there anymore,

I'm sitting here with you.

I've forgiven my sins,

Yet I worry if you can too.

~Fin~

It's all in good fun.

~#~ ~#~ ~#~

"Another beer here." Special Agent David Sinclair lifted his mug for a refill.

The bartender complied, bringing a new mug and taking the empty away.

Sinclair downed it in a few gulps. This was his third beer and he could still think. He didn't want to think. Thinking hurt because it made him remember.

Dammit, how could he have been so blind?

Colby… a spy? For the fuckin' Chinese, no less.

David closed his eyes, pressing his hands against his eyelids as if to erase the images burned within. It didn't work since it only served to focus his hearing and he replayed the conversation he'd interrupted in the locker room that afternoon.

~Hey, did you hear about Granger?~

~Yeah, can you believe it? A spy… the whole damned time he's been here. Y'think Sinclair knew?~

A derisive snort. ~They were partners, asshole. He'd have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to know.~

Sinclair had recognized the speakers as Tommy Miller and Lee Richards, agents in the Fraud unit. He and Colby had had run-ins with the pair in the past and a deep-seated animosity had taken root.

Unable to remain a passive listener any longer, David had exited the shower stall and confronted the two agents. A scuffle had broken out and while normally two-to-one odds wouldn't have concerned Sinclair, he took a misstep on a wet patch of floor and had gone down hard. A well-placed kick to the ribs had kept him down as Miller warned that they would be keeping their eyes on him, too.

"Hit me again," David ordered the bartender, wincing at his unfortunate and unthinking choice of words. He shoved his empty mug at the man, ignoring the disapproving look. He had walked here, he'd take a cab home. How much he had to drink was no one's goddamned business.

The OPR grilling had started off his day. Don had called him last night, warned him to expect it. The senior agent had tried to engage him in conversation but David had cut him off, telling him he could handle it and he'd see Eppes at the office in the morning.

David had been questioned by OPR in the past, both as witness and suspect. He never liked it. It seemed to him the bastards were exceptionally eager to nail someone to the wall, enough so that they didn't always care if it was the wrong someone.

~How fuckin' stupid do you think we are, Sinclair?~ the senior investigator had sneered. ~You want us to believe that in two years of stakeouts and bar crawling, Granger never let slip once what he was into?~

David had tried to keep his cool, tried to defend himself. Colby had been a spy, and a damned good one. He kept that part of his life compartmentalized, away from their cases.

Neither OPR agent believed it.

Finally after four hours, Don had put a stop to the interrogation, saying unless they had proof of wrong doing, he needed Agent Sinclair on a case.

As David left the room, the older agent had taken one last parting shot.

~You were partners, Sinclair. I'm willing to bet you not only turned a blind eye to it, but that you were up to your eyeballs in it with him.~

Only Don's quick reflexes had kept David from smearing the bastard against the wall.

Knowing he needed to eat something, David ordered some chicken strips and fries. Eating was the last thing he wanted to do but he needed something in his stomach.

It was midnight when he finally left the bar. He slowly and carefully made his way home. Not so much because he was drunk but more from the tears that were blinding his vision.

No one knew just how much he had lost. And he couldn't tell, either. Not without making things worse. For himself and for Colby.

Colby.

Ducking into a nearby alley, David finally gave in to the overwhelming emotion. His legs were no longer strong enough to hold him up and he sagged against the wall, slowly sliding to the ground.

Partner. Friend. Lover.

Traitor.

Nausea cramped his gut and he heaved until he had nothing left but bile. Wiping his eyes on his jacket sleeve, David wearily climbed to his feet and made his way out of the alley.

When he'd left Brooklyn he had tried to leave behind the kid he'd been. Now he found himself thankful that he had that memory to call upon. The youthful David Sinclair had trusted no one but himself.

It seemed the adult David Sinclair would do well to remember that. He couldn't afford to get blindsided by the likes of a Colby Granger again.

The price was too damned high.

~end~

FIC: Traitor

Hi! *waves nervously* This is my first time posting fic here, though I'm no stranger to fandom at large. Been writing in one fandom or another for... seventeen years or so.

Here's the first of my David/Colby prompt challenge fics. I haven't gotten the table done yet. Figured the writing should come first and then I can work on putting the table together. All the prompt stories will revolved around Janus List, Trust Metric and the first few episodes of this season.

If you like it, there will be more. If you don't? Well, it's short and easily ignored! LOL! And now on to the fic...

Title: Traitor
Author: Paige
Characters: David/Colby
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 533
Spoilers: "The Janus List,"
Feedback: Yes please! I need to know if it makes sense. And also if I should continue with this project.
Beta: starmaid333
Disclaimer: They're not mine and I'm not making any money from this. It's all in good fun.

~#~ ~#~ ~#~

Traitor. David's word cuts through me like a knife. I have to look away because if we make eye contact just once he'll know. I'm sure of it. And even now… especially now, I can't afford that.

Dammit, this isn't the path I planned for my life. Yeah, I wanted to be more than just a cop. Not that I have anything against them. But cops have limited jurisdiction. I wanted to see more of the big picture.

Yeah, I've seen it all right. More than I bargained for, in fact. Damn.

Much as I'd like to lay this at Dwayne's door I can't. They were up front about the risks and the fact that this wouldn't be a quick undercover job. I'd be living the lie for months, probably years. Which is exactly what happened.

And up until two years ago, I was okay with that. I never stayed in one place too long. Never let anyone get too close to me. Life was lonely sometimes but at least it was uncomplicated, too.

Then I got transferred to L.A., and Don Eppes team. I'd heard of Eppes. That he was a fair guy and that he'd earned the high respect his team held for him. Easy to see why once I was with them.

Even so, I didn't think it would be a big deal. Come in, do the job, just like always. And then I met David Sinclair.

To this day I still have no idea how he smashed through my defenses. I wasn't looking for a friend. And certainly we didn't start out that way. There were a couple times in the beginning where I thought we might end up beating the shit out of each other but it never happened. It was like… one day we just decided that we could work together as a team. A pretty damned good team, too.

And then I realized just as suddenly that David wasn't just my partner. Or even just my friend. He was the man I loved. How in the hell did that happen? It wasn't supposed to happen and not because he's a guy, either. You think Dwayne and I never got down and dirty?

Though with Dwayne it was just release and pleasure. I knew that after the first time with David. It was a night and day difference.

So many stakeouts. Nights spent sharing pizza and beer, catching a game. And afterwards, making love. Hey, I call it as I see it. To do less would be a discredit to both of us.

I wanted to tell him what was going on from the start. Lying to David was one of the hardest things I've ever done. But I knew he could never know. If he did, it wouldn't just be my life in danger. I've seen what the bastards I'm pursuing are capable of. The lengths they'll go to get what they want.

Right now they see my relationship with David as a means to an end. I occasionally take something he's told me back to them. As long as they feel David is useful and not a threat, he's safe. And I swear to God I'll do whatever it takes to keep him that way.

As long as he's alive, I can live with knowing that I'm the cause of the pain and betrayal in those incredible eyes. David is what's good and right about this screwed up world I'm living in. The time spent with him has reminded me why I'm putting my neck on the line.

There's also the hope that somehow, someday, I can explain it all to him. He may never forgive me for lying. But at least he'll know there was a reason.

God, let me live through this so I can tell him what we had wasn't part of the lie.

Hi, all

I have a 6000-wd David/Colby story that could use a beta read. Is there a willing victim out there? I can promise that the spelling and grammar are clean, so mainly it's the story and characterization that might benefit. Oh, and I should warn you, it is quite NC-17. Nothing kinky, but definitely graphic.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'd like to do something about it but for what I have in mind, I need assistance. I'd love to do a table with prompts but I have no clue how that is accomplished. I'm computer literate to an extent and with a little help I think I could do it. Is there anyone out there who can give me a hand or point me to a page with instructions? LOL

Remember, there's potential David/Colby fic at stake here!

Best regards,
Paige
