UGH - sick :(
So I was so excited when I found Eckerds drug store carries Citracal creamy bites. I had been wanting to try them because Calcium pills are such a PITA (I have the bari tech ones which are great because they're m&m sized, but you need to take SIX a day - it's a PITA) - so I bought them in fudge. When I tasted it I was like WOW - this is like a BROWNIE! How COOL is this!? But within 5 minutes I was seriously nauseous - and still am - I took it about 20 minutes ago and it's finally starting to subside a bit. WHAT GIVES????

There are 4 grams of sugar per serving (1 calcium bite) - but lots of people here have them from the get-go. Am I that sensitive to sugar? :s

But MANY, many people here eat them from the get-go after surgery. That's why I bought them, they come highly recommended by this community.

I've never seen them discouraged - they're made from calcium citrate, not carbonate, making them optimum for absorption after RNY. In fact, there was a post made just this week about them.

Awesome. Thanks for the information. I'll ask my dr about that.. it doesn't sound right now that you put it that way. Thanks... sorry for any confusion on my part.

was it on an empty stomach? i've noticed when i eat sugary things on an empty stomach, it hits me harder and takes less to make me dump. maybe you could try it after you eat sometime, as a dessert. :)

About 15 minutes prior I had had a small slice of mozzarella with a slice of tomato sprinkled with basil. I was thinking maybe that was not enough to "cushion" the citracal? What do ya think?

They can get stuck. Any vitamin chewies (like viactiv) are very dangerous to take because they don't dissolve well, etc. It's the same reason we can't have gum. You probably had a rough time actually getting it down - I know that I always get very nauseous when things are having a hard time going down.

My sureon is VERY adamant that you should not take these products. The clinic has had several patients come in with them stuck - which requires surgery and is very dangerous.

Your choice, but not worth the risk if you ask me.

Well viactiv is calcium carbonate, not citrate. We're supposed to have calcium citrate for maximum calcium absorption. I've never heard of them getting stuck - all I know is that I've read people raving about them here since before surgery.

Also, they're kinda big for one bite - I had mine in 3 baby bites - but maybe I ate it to fast?

You still have to chew them up extremely well, Queli. That's stressed on the package and the NP is always repeating this advice on my surgeon's board.

I really hope it works better for you next time.

*hugs*

Oh, it has nothing to do with the calcium. The actualy chewy-ness of the thing is what can get it stuck.

Glad you liked them, sorry they didn't like you...

What if you cut it in half and tried taking it twice a day. I know the bites are mini, but maybe its tooooo much.

I didn't like them, at all! I remember real bownies, though!

Yeah, these are better, I find, on an empty stomach. I can't go above about 8 grams of sugar, so if I'm eating anything else close to the calcium, I might get overload.

Try them again, on an empty stomach, and you might want to take a magnesium supplement at the same time (helps with absorption, according to my nutritionist.... I actually chew mine, crunch it up with my teeth, but it's not a great experience. I take the Citracal right after and that makes it all better. :o))

I hope your next experience is better.

Turns out that Citracal got so many complaints about its packaging from WalMart customers that they told them to just take them off the shelf. They are coming out with an easier-to-open package in about two weeks.
