bellydance meetup? can it be done? Would love to host a bellydance meetup at WisCon, but when? Would people tear themselves away from the auction on Saturday night after it had been going a couple hours? Or would you be willing to stop karaoke-ing on Friday at 9:30??

More Not-So Spontaneous Programming! Because I desperately want to babble about shoujo manga to people:
Shoujo Bodies
Most bodies in shoujo manga are thin and wispy, with an emphasis on androgyny. Many of the men tend to lack muscle definition (think Yuu Watase), while the women are much less curvy than their shounen manga counterparts. What does this mean to us? What other body types are there in shoujo manga? We will hopefully talk about gender-bending, cross-dressing, body image, and the fashion industry. Suggested series to discuss: After School Nightmare, Paradise Kiss, Walkin' Butterfly, Angel Sanctuary, Fruits Basket, W Juliet, Rose of Versailles, and Princess Knight.
Time and place should be decided on Thursday at Wiscon; keep an eye out on the spontaneous programming board. | 2:58 pm [coffeeandink]

(Not So) Spontaneous Programming If spontaneous programming is still going on this year, I'm going to be trying to grab some space for a couple of program items that came up after the programming suggestions deadline/didn't make the official program cut-off. Please check the board in Madison for scheduling details if you're interested in attending. ( Seal Press Boycott )( Octavian Nothing Book Club ) | 2:09 pm [carbonel]

Wiscon Governor's Club room reservation available For some reason, the Wiscon hotel is convinced that I had two reservations for hotel rooms in the Governor's Club, instead of the one that I actually made.
Since it's presumably guaranteed with my credit card, it behooves me to dispose of it before I get charged an extra room night for non-appearance.
Is anyone interested in this room? It's on the Governor's Club level, which means it costs an extra $30 or so per night, but gives access to perks such as continental breakfast, evening bar, and lounge.
If you are, please send an e-mail to carbonel@livejournal.com. I'll post again here when it's taken.

WisCon POC-only Space Hey everyone, I'm sort of organizing the details of the POC-only space and panel at WisCon. I'm taking votes here on when the panel will take place and asking for volunteers to monitor the POC-only space when we have it. Also, for anyone interested, here's the info on why we're having this space. And lastly, this isn't an official WisCon thing, just something many POC attending are organizing. | 2:58 pm [ksp24]

Coming to WisCon and hoping to say hi to people if there is an LJ party . . . but do not have any info on that--please let me know if there is something arranged! Thanks! Current Mood: content | 8:02 am [fuzzyinthehead]

Ok, I'm an idiot I just received a transferred membership in the past week. This morning, I remembered that I will be helping one friend move on Saturday and attending a different friend's wedding in Milwaukee on Sunday. As such, I won't be able to attend most of the con. It seems silly, and a little mean, to keep someone else from going. So, does anyone still need a membership? Current Mood: embarrassed | | Sunday, May 11th, 2008 | 2:32 pm [juliebata]

Tiptree Bakesale At Wiscon I'm just about to send an e-mail version of this message to folks who checked off on the registration form that they wish to bring something for the Tiptree bakesale. I figure posting it here may reach a few more people who didn't get the e-mail but might also wish to bake.
Many things about the Tiptree bakesale remain the same every year. It will be held on Saturday in room #627, which is across the hall from consuite. We start at 11:30am, and run all afternoon. Please just make a single batch or pan of whatever you wish to bring. Making more than one type of thing is great, but please, no gigantic triple batches of any one item! Non-perishables are best. There is a tiny fridge in the bakesale room, but it fills up fast, and I cannot guarantee space in it. If you make brownies or bars, do cut them up before-hand, and don't forget to label your containers so we can try to get them back to you. Even better, use disposable containers you don't need returned. We prefer home-made items, please- nothing store bought. Last year, someone brought pies from the Norske Nook, and I certainly didn't turn them away, but I'd really like the bakesale to mainly consist of items that we ourselves made in our very own kitchens, to raise money for the Tiptree award. If you can, please provide an ingredient list, or at the very least a heads-up on potential allergy items (contains nuts, wheat, dairy, etc..) Wiscon is taking allergies more and more seriously every year. I'm allergic to nuts myself, so I appreciate knowing what all the bakesale goodies contain. I will be in the bakesale room much of Friday afternoon and evening, and Saturday morning, getting set up. Please make every effort to bring your items for the bakesale before 11:30am Saturday. It's more difficult to accept items once the bakesale is underway.
If you're wondering what to make, I say, make anything you like! Every year we see cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, fudge and so much more. I love to see a huge variety of goodies come across the table, especially colorful or unusual items. And of course- anything chocolate is always very popular.
A BIG thank you to all of you who are willing to make something for the Tiptree bakesale! If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me!

How about a Sniff-and-swap party? Any other BPAL fans going to the con? I have a large stash of imps and bottles that I'd love to share and trade (for other perfumes, or for books, or just random cool stuff). Anyone interested in meeting up for an impromptu sniff-and-swap? | 12:20 am [revena]

Bring Your DS! Girl-Wonder.org and Cerise will be co-hosting a party, "Capes and Consoles," on the 24th in room 623. We plan to have games available to play, including some Nintendo DS games for multiple players (such as Metroid Prime Pinball). So if you've got a DS, and you're planning to stop by Capes and Consoles, be sure to bring it to WisCon with you! Hope to see many of you there. :-) Current Mood: excited | | Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | 11:03 pm [mr_bad_example]

Need a roommate? Hey, all. I just found out recently that I would, in fact, be able to attend Wiscon this year.
If there's any chance that anybody has some extra space in their room, I'd be thrilled to help out with rent. It would just be me. I'm very quiet and low-maintenance.
If you have any space to spare, feel free to contact me. My email address is in my profile. | 11:24 pm [helen_keeble]

My marmite for your Cheetos? I am coming to WisCon from the UK, with very large suitcases that I intend to fill with books on the way back. This means that I have a lot of space in my luggage on the way out!
It occurred to me that there might be people hankering for a taste of classic British cuisine. I'm not really sure what we have over here that you don't, though - Yorkshire Tea? Marmite? Proper biscuits? Bovril? Really terrible chocolate?
Let me know if there's something you long to have brought to you from Ye Olde England, and I will attempt to oblige. For my part, I have deep and profound cravings for Reeces Pieces and "proper" Cheetos and Doritos. (they changed the recipe when they launched them over here. Oh cruel fate!) And if anyone can happen to lay their hands on Peeps, you will win my undying affection. It's bizarre the things that one misses...
Edit: The order list so far...
McVitties plain chocolate digestives * 2 (bifemmefatal and gwynnega) Marks & Spencers sultana + oat biscuits (mecooper) Marks & Spencers double devon toffees * 2 (mecooper, elisem) McVitties Jaffa cakes (seaya) Kinder Egg Surprise (someone who commented anonymously - I'll need your name!) Marmite * 3 (darth_snarky, oliemoon, miep) Dairy Milk chocolate, Mars Bars (sistermarysith) M&S Earl Grey teabags (ellen_kushner) Picnic bars, Curly Wurly bars (miep)
Things I sadly can't get hold of and/or transport: Christmas crackers, clotted cream
Things I'm not yet sure I can obtain, but will look for: butter tablet | 8:51 am [vylar_kaftan]

Journeyman Writers' Meeting Hello, folks! I'd like to announce an additional programming event which will not be on the program. (Mostly because I didn't think of it until it was too late.)
There will be a Journeyman Writers' Meeting for newer writers. Much like the Mid-Career Writers' Meeting, we'll talk about whatever the attendees want: craft, business, market news, and so forth.
Anyone with one or more SFWA-qualifying sales is welcome to attend.
It will be on Saturday during the lunch hour in Room 607, which is the overflow programming room. The lunch hour runs from 11:15-1:00, so we'll try to get started at 11:45 or so. That gives people time to run over to Michelangelo's and get a sandwich to bring along.
Please help spread the word. I'll also put up details in the overflow-programming board at the con. Thanks. | 10:36 am [sistermarysith]

Tiptree Winner Reviewed by the New Yorker! Sarah Hall got a good, if brief, review in the New Yorker. This is by way of being a miracle. I can't remember the last time the New Yorker reviewed a book of fantasy or SF. It might have been The Children of Men, by P.D. James. cross-posted to Wiscon, Whileaway, and my LJ | | Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | 1:00 pm [intelligentrix]

Membership I deeply regret that I won't make it to WisCon this year. The best laid plans, as we all know, oft gang agley, and mine were not best laid at all.
That said, I have a membership up for grabs. (Poor membership people--mine was a transfer from someone else. I am so sorry to be causing even more confusion in the bookkeeping.) I paid $40 for it. Anyone still need one? | 12:26 am [lloronas_eyes]

Have all the Wiscon schedules arrived by now? I don't think I have a Wiscon schedule, but a lot of people got one on Tuesday. Do I need to worry that I threw it out with junk mail? If so, what are the options for getting a schedule?
Thanks in advance. |
