I will be traveling to europe and am wondering, which wines (or beers..:P) should I try? Im a wine novice and love muscato d'asti, though dont mind trying other types. So I will be going to:

amsterdam
berlin
vienna
prague
rome
barcelona
paris

thanks and I hope this post isn't too stupid.

Best travel advice I can offer: follow the locals. Get out of the tourist districts if you can, find the local pub that serves the local microbrew that's fantastic. Likewise with restaurants and wine bars, you'll come across dozens of producers who aren't found in this part of the world. You'll encounter good and bad, but that's the same as here. Enjoy the trip!

good advice above. if you're really not sure you can always ask the wait staff or random locals what they would recommend. we europeans tend to be excited about our local food & drinks and i'm sure most people would be enthusiastically suggesting something. i would (and have). :]

Anything you can!

Go for variety. The best way to learn about what you like or don't like, is to try as many different kinds of beer or wine as you can (don't go overboard, though). I would try to get to local wineries or wine shops and try what the locals suggest.

Now this isn't about wine, but if you're going to Vienna, be sure to stop at The Hotel Sacher and try their delicious Sacher Torte. It originated there and it's absolutely heavenly.

As I recall, it's near the opera house.

In Prague try the following beers:

The dark beer - you'll find it sweet, not bitter.

Staropramen, Pilsner Urquell and Budwar - the true Budwiser. Those are the three top brands and are all good.

You can also visit the Pilsner Urquell brewery - its about an hour outside of Prague in Pilsen.

When you are in Paris or Barcelona I recommend La Vinia:
http://www.lavinia.es/tiendas.aspx

You can click on "tiendas" for their addresses. It's a HUGE wine shop. At least the one in Madrid is. And virtually everything there is choice. I'd try to check out some of the more exotic styles of whatever you happen to be drinking. I've always said that Spain, at least, never exports their best wines.

When in Vienna, go to the wine houses on the outskirts of town. Get a beverage called "Sturm" which is the foundation for Vertliner.

We were in Amsterdam for two weeks in March and I never could find a decent glass of wine. Drink beer.

Basically, drink what the region is known for... I don't know what all these are known for, an I'm sure others will help, but here is what I do know... Simply, The advice to drink
amsterdam - beer
berlin - beer and white wines (typically semi-dry to sweet wines. Reds are not as common)
vienna -
prague -
rome - Wine! Actually, you'll have access to everything Italian here... I recently traveled to Tuscany and Alba for lots of red wine. The reds are amazing but the whites are good too... basicaly go with what people recommend. Italians are often more than happy to help and quite the chatty types :)
barcelona - Wine
paris - Wine

Actually, one thing I found very helpful to explore wines, was to find a local supermarket or discount grocery store... it's rare they you find the "big supermarket" stores but they do exist... We got a ton of really good and really inexpensive wine this way.
