Finding Specific Wine
Do any of you folks have any advice for finding a specific type of wine that my local wine shop no longer carries? I've googled, I've ordered two bottles from an importer/reseller in Chicago, and I've not really had any luck finding any others (said store in Chicago has sold all of their other bottles of the stuff). Apparently my Google-Fu isn't strong enough to find anything else, much to my chagrin.

What I'm looking for is a rioja that I had last year. Muga produces an occasional Seleccion Especial. The 2001 vintage is what I'm looking for (though I suspect that I may invest in the 2004 as well, which I can actually find online), and like I said, short of the two bottles that I ordered from the folks in Chicago (I ordered it in October, and it's supposed to sail from Spain this weekend, finally), I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.

I don't know that I'm ever going to be able to find it again, to be perfectly honest, but I figured that I'd mention it here in the hopes that someone might have some sort of hints or information about hunting down somewhat rare wines. Thanks in advance!

Check with Zachys online (http://www.zachys.com/) and see if they ship to your state. They have a better selection of Muga than anywhere else I have found, brick or mortar.

My wife and I have had a number of bottles of Muga ever since we visited the winery in 2005, most from there. 2003 was supposedly not a great vintage so I'd stay away from it.

Oh, you're in New York. Zachys is right by the Scarsdale Metro North station!

Yep! I am emailing them, as they don't have the 2001. Hopefully they might have some advice or know if they might be in line to procure some in the future or something. I'd heard the same about 2003 (which of course they do have), so I'll steer clear of that. The 2004 is supposedly nearly as good as the 2001. I may try that as well.

I'm jealous of your trip there! I'm sure it was wonderful!

I'm curious to try a bottle of 2003 just to see what the nonhype is about.

Just covering some bases. Though I'm sure you've already tried these:

1. Did you contact Muga and see if they have any directly there? A lot of the wineries I like keep reserves on stock in special rooms after the bottling, and every winery I send email to is usually returned with a very friendly email from someone at the winery trying to help. (I don't know if you can ship privately internationally, but it could be worth it to ask)

2. If you still have a bottle, there should be an importer listed on there for handling bottles in the US. Maybe call them directly and see if they can hunt some down for you, either directly, or through a link to a store that has it.

3. Is there any reason why your local wine shop stopped carrying it? I take it from the post that it was becase they couldn't order any more and not because they didn't want to. Have other shops in your area told you the same thing?

Good luck in your search, I went out to their site and saw a description, that wine sounds incredible.

Oh! What a great idea to contact them and see what they say! I will definitely try that.

I don't still have a bottle, though I do have two that should be arriving sometime within the next month, so I'll try that as well.

The store where I originally purchased it ran out. I haven't actually asked why they haven't gotten any more or if they may in the future. I should probably do that, haha.

Thanks for your advice!

Muga is a fairly prominent Rioja producer, and it may be a bit of a challenge finding remaining stock of older releases. If your local wine shop ran out, it might be worth asking them to special order you a case of '01 (some stores may be able to offer stock if you commit to larger quantities). As for the '03 vintage, it depends on who you talk to. It was an extremely hot year, and so for most Europeans, it produced atypical wines from most areas. Many North Americans have found the '03 bottlings to offer an accessibility that other vintages don't possess, but that's a matter of taste.

I agree I had an 03 muga at a tasting, and while it wasn't my style I think it was well made and would hit the American flavor well, also had enough back ground to still be a bit Spanish.
