I'm working the booth at MSFT TechReady and traffic is pretty light. A lot of people want to know how to update their phones to know 6.1. Wish there was a better answer than 'talk to your operator.'
Also, since this is an international audiebce, people want to know how to unlock their phones. Anybody have a favorite unlock site? LMK.

Any recommendations for an A2DP headset? I'm specifically after something that I can plug my own headphones into.
Thanks |

| | impressed | ] | The device is flat-out sexy. It is gloss black, including a great screen background. Weighing about 95 grams, it is one of the lightest-weight phones I’ve ever used. There are only two buttons and a joystick on the front of the device, but it has all kinds of buttons around the sides. I’m still occasionally hitting an accidental button when I pick it up, but it is much less frequent than I anticipated. The right side includes a power button, Internet button, and camera button. The left includes volume up and down. The one that surprised me was the bottom edge of the phone. A button there just says “Push.” I did. Imagine my surprise when the battery fell out and the phone went dead. The good thing is that the battery is actually a part of the back cover, so you putting it back together was one smooth operation.
More, including pix if you are interested at http://tinyurl.com/5jgzlr. Let me know if you've got any questions about this device or if you want me to test something particular. I haven't found a 6.1 update for it yet, but I'm hoping to hear from LG about availability soon. |

| | happy | ] | For three years, I've been writing a blog, then a newsletter, and a podcast at MS for internal consumption only on the mobile industry and what is happening. This week I got permission to take it public as a blog. If you are interested, you can find it at http://goingmobile.spaces.live.com/. I'd love to hear your comments and suggestions if you get a chance to stop by. I post a new newsletter every Monday. |

| Devicescape |
[May. 16th, 2008|12:47 am] |
If you use any form of Wi-fi network which requires you to log in, you'll probably be aware of the irritating problems with signing into them. My Uni requires me to type in a 9 digit number followed by @students.lincoln.ac.uk and then type my password before I can get anywhere, which is both time consuming and very annoying. I'd wondered about hacking something together to get round it, but never found the time to work out if I actually could. Having recently won a years worth of BTopenzone wi-fi roaming service however, I've found myself logging in more and getting more frustrated, so have looked into it again. Hence finding Devicescape.
Its a free program thing for Mobiles, laptops PDAS etc, which lets you automatically log into wi-fi hotspots (You can also manually confirm), without all the silly typing, you 'just connect'. It has support for Universities, work and roaming netoworks, and you can request sites you'd like added if they're not there. (It can also work on private home networks although I don't know what that adds). I'm going to admit I haven't technically used it yet, only read up, installed and joined, but it looks pretty good so I figured I'd share reguardless. I'll probably make a post some time tomorrow if I've managed to get it working, to say how it works etc.
Still check it out, see what you think. I'm hoping this will actually allow me to easily get online with my pda, without five minutes of annoyed tapping with my stylus... |

| Cool things to do with an iPaq |
[Apr. 20th, 2008|06:33 pm] |
Ello all, My iPaq HX4700 went missing for a fortnight lately and since I've found it I've had the urge to do more with it, find it some more cool software or accessories or upgrades or something.
At the moment I use it as an organizer/calendar and also for ebook reading, surfing and puzzles/games. Things I'm contemplating:
- RAM upgrade
- A case that actually holds the extended battery
- Some notes organiser software (at the moment I'm leaning towards TreNotes)
- More games, because you can never have too many
So I just wanted to ask y'all -- what do you consider the best software/accessories/whatever for Pocket PC 2003? What are the things you've done to or bought for an iPaq that have really transformed it for you? All ideas are gratefully received. |

| Cellphone games playable on Windows Mobile 6? |
[Apr. 19th, 2008|05:36 pm] |
| [ | Current Mood |
| | tired | ] | Hi again, everyone. I'm hoping you can help me with another question. :)
I am completely addicted to the game Hexic. I play it online, but I would also love to play it on my Sprint Mogul (PPC-6800). There is a mobile version of this game that I really want, but it seems like it is only compatible with regular cellphones. Is there a chance that it might work on my Mogul, as well, or would there any additional software that I can install on it to make it work?
I know that Astraware has made a Hexic version for Pocket PC, but that's not going to work as I find it too difficult to differentiate between the blue and purple colors that they used.
Thanks for your help! |

| | Atrum Regina by Dark Funeral | ] | Hey, everyone. I'm hoping someone can help me as I am very thoroughly confused after googling the hell out of this.
I just want to be able to have remote access to my desktop PC (Windows XP Home Edition) from my HTC Mogul (PPC-6800) and transfer files between them as necessary. I have read up on different options like VNC, RDP (I do have WM6 Remote Desktop installed on my Mogul but can't figure out how to set up my computer to connect to it), something about setting up VPNs... and... yeah. My brain is goo at this point.
I know about LogMeIn.com, but it appears I would have a pay a monthly fee for the pro version for the file transfers.
Thanks for your help in advance. |

| Gmail problem? |
[Mar. 29th, 2008|05:25 pm] |
I'm learning WM 6 on my HTC6800 and I've got my email set to check my gmail acct every 5 minutes or something. For some reason, its only picking up about 1/2 the emails. First I thought it was because of my laptop checking my account and creating conflict, or because of me logging into google for whatever reason, but now it doesn't seem to be the case. I've not logged in all day, I randomly get an email on my phone from my gmail acct., and just now I check my gmail online and theres about 12 that were never picked up by my phone from throughout today and I can't see any rhyme or reason as to why it didn't pick up these specific ones (they arent spam or all from businesses, etc).
Any suggestions? |

| IM client for HTC6800? |
[Mar. 28th, 2008|11:27 am] |
I just got an HTC PPC6800 through Alltel. Unfortunately the Palingro IM client doesn't work with the 6800/Alltel combination. Can anyone recommend an alternative free IM for Windows Mobile that will at least support AIM & Google talk?
I've found something called Octro (www.octro.com) but I'm not finding any reviews about it. |

| PIE-friendly Livejournal layouts |
[Mar. 27th, 2008|08:49 am] |
I do a fair bit of surfing from my iPaq, a HX4700 with Pocket PC 2003 SE installed. The browser I use is Pocket Internet Explorer (which I hate with a passion but haven't really looked for a viable alternative for as yet).
The trouble is, most of what I look at is Livejournal, and so far I've totally failed to find a Livejournal layout that makes good use of a four-inch screen, but doesn't look too rubbish when browsing from a PC.
What do you guys recommend for LJ layouts? Or alternatively, are there any browsers that are much, much better for browsing livejournal and not getting pages that look like this? |

| Intent Network Access |
[Feb. 11th, 2008|12:22 pm] |
Hiya,
I'm using the Intent Midlet Manager on Windows Mobile 6, and I'm getting really fed up with the:"midletname" wishes to access the network, which might use call time. This MIDlet suite is not from a trusted source. Allow this time? ... message that pops up everytime I try and do something.
I had this problem in WM5 too, but under WM2003SE there was an option to only have that message appear once per session, rather than per attempt to access the internet. Things like Opera Mini and Google Mail are a pain in the backside to use!
Does anyone know of any setting, registry hack or workaround to change this behaviour?
Thanks, Dave |

| Palringo/Trillian cooperation |
[Jan. 16th, 2008|05:24 am] |
Is anyone using Palringo for IM-ing on their mobile devices?
I use Trillian for on my desktop and Palringo on my phone but I have a problem with Yahoo. AOL, and ICQ work just fine although AOL sends me a message every time I am "signed in at 2 locations." But Yahoo refuses to sign in on my mobile until I manually sign out on the desktop and vise versa.
Is there some way to make this more seemless? I would like the desktop program of Trillian to just go inactive when it is on screen saver and let the mobile application Palringo to take over. I guess this is asking to much of two different programs by two different makers. ICQ seems to be just fine with this arangement though and AOL does it OK with a message popping up on both locations each time I switch between them.
Any Ideas?
I hear that Trillian is working on a mobile App so perhaps that will fix the problem with a more seemless cross-platform solution. I really can't complain too much about Palringo though, for being a free app it is isn't teh suck. Just wish that I had more battery as running IM really eats through them on G3 or WiFi. I'm very happy that my 8525 charges fast because I'm charging the beast every time I get close to a wall outlet or someone's computer with a USB port! |

| My laptop won't charge |
[Jan. 8th, 2008|01:21 pm] |
So what does that have to do with my WM device?
I want to (need to really as it is acting up something fierce) upgrade my 8525 to the WM6.0 ROM.
I have a second identical laptop (for backup purposes just like this one) that I can charge batteries on my first laptop and get it going and so far I have backed up my contacts and everything else to my main laptop.
The Big issue is:
The Outlook TOS says that it can be installed on one computer and one computer ONLY.
I installed activesync to the new computer but what will happen if I use the "magic numbers" from the Outlook registration and go ahead and install that on the second computer too?
I know if you do this with XP it will have serious problems if you try and install the registration code on a second computer. Does Outlook do "Activation" similar to XP or above OS's from Microsoft? Will I end up disabling the Outlook on my #1 laptop? I plan on using #1 again when I get the parts for it (DC/DC card I'm hoping but it might be the mainboard) I don't use Outlook for anything BUT syncing data as I'm not an Outlook person. I think MS is really circling the anti-trust issue here making us use an EXPENSIVE inhouse system like Outlook to keep contact information on these mobile phones. Is there a free 3rd-party alternative I could find?
Can I just do the upgrade flash with just active sync and not outlook? I've saved my data at least. I'm looking at buying SPB's backup program too. But I hear it doesn't work backing up files to the device if a new ROM OS is flashed or to another device. That is of limited utility IMHO. |
