9:57 pm - Been busy on bebo!

I do like my Bebo page as it allows me to upload videos of songs I like but don't own from Youtube. Some of them ahve nice vids with them, some are fanvids, but mostly i get them for the songs and which has the best mix. As most of the songs are Rock/Metal, it won't surprise you to learn that "best mix" means LOUDEST.
Hopefully I will figure this place out enough for me to place vids on ehre but as it is a nightmare to navigate I will do it one thing at a time.

Just when I was getting ready for my holiday and see my daughter I get hit with a last minute kick in the teeth.
The rpice I had been quoted by her grandparents for taxi fares was bad enough but it seems the taxis are double that price. I am now in the very real problem of being unable to see my daughter every day. What was going to be a good holiday has now become heartbreak.
I don't know how much more of this I can take.

6:10 pm - Why I loved Tara so much!
|

ronjamuk
|
I don't want to state all the reasons directly, as they are very personal to me but suffice as to say I identified with Tara and what she went through at home. Moreover I felt that Tara was a sign that maybe the upset and pain i had went through would come right in the end that I wouldn't be unwanted and alone. It is for this reason that I was so upset at her death. the way it was done and the connotations of it are bad enough, but it was the loss that I felt, the loss of hope, that really scarred me.
But why did I like Tara? I think because she had a quiet strength about her. The only character I have seen in the same terms as Tara is the character of Andy in The Shawshank Redemption. Both had a quiet nobility, a strength of character and of purpose that transcended the walls of their world and gave hope not only to the characters in their story, but to us the viewers as well.
It also helps that Tara was played by Amber, a woman with an undeniably compassionate and generous nature. I have never heard anyone say a bad word about Amber when they have met her. I ahve been lucky enough to meet this amazing woman twice. The second time was on my 35th birthday, and she mad ethat day really special.
So that's why i think Tara is great and the acrtress who played her has me as a fan for life.

As people who know me know, I am a huge fan of Buffy. However, I'm not without my criticisms, especially of the later seasons, so I will be posting those criticisms and plaudits over the next few days.
Be warned - If you think Joss Whedon walks on water and can do no wrong you might want to avoid the slamming he is gonna get for season 6!
As you may have noticed, seasons 5 & 6 are up for comments, the rest are posted on my livejournal here:
season 1 season 2 season 3 season 4 season 7
What is the point of a posting site that makes no bloody sense!

10:07 am - Buffy Season 6 - Overview!
|

ronjamuk
|
It is difficult for me, someone who truly describes himself as a fan of Buffy, to write this review knowing that it will be for the most part very negative. However, I am not such a fan as I am willing to be blindly loyal to the writers and forgive them there considerable foibles. So here goes:
Firstly, let's deal with the positives, as there are some to report. The much anticipated musical episode was an audacious and realised concept that quite frankly had no right to be as good as it was. The dark tone of the season was a change from the norm and the idea of relaity and the perils of being an adult in the big world being the main challenge was a good idea and an intelligent change of pace after the apocalyptic big finish to season 5. Also, it must be said that for the principals, this is probably the best season for all of them in terms of performances. Indeed, many of the problems that are indicated in the individual episodes are often hidden under the solid work of the main cast.
Sadly, however, those were all the positives. Previous seasons had either good arcs with some less than stellar episodes within them (seasons 2 & 5) or weak story arcs with strong episodes (season 4). Only season 3 got the combination consistently right, with a strong story arc with strong episodes. So here we have the pay off from season 3, where the one had both this had neither.
The problem with the episodes in general is that, the musical and "Tabula Rasa" aside, nothing really new is being said. Where as previous seasons had revelled in taking old cliches and horror story conventions and given them a cheeky twist, season 6 seemed intent, and sadly content, with sticking slavishly to cliche as if the writers just couldn't be bothered. There is a tiredness to the story structure and dialogue, as if the writers have real creative fatigue. This may be true, and might even be forgivable, but when you invest the time to sit and watch a show that has been such a high quality one for so long, you deserve more than simply average. sadly, many of the episodes could only dream of being average, so lacking in any dramatic or emotional resonance.
Then there is the arc, which is very fractured. What is the point of the arc in season 6? Buffy is even more insufferable in this season than any other (in fact this season put me right off Buffy as a character). Spike is merely used as an excuse to get him naked and to bamboozle the viewers with near-nudity and suggested sex in attempt to hide the vaccuous nature of the plots. Willow's arc makes absolutely no sense, either in terms of her character or in dramatic terms, and the final 4 episodes are almost laughably bad in terms of plotting.
Xander is pretty much wasted in this season, and his big moment is so badly handled that it's hard to get up any cheer for him. Similarly, Anya is wasted and in a cruel twist of fate for both of those characters, the wedding not happening was the worst thing to happen for those characters dramatically. Dawn gets a year older and yet is written as though she was a year younger. Giles is barely in it and at least has some impact and as for Tara, she finally gets used somewhere properly this season and just when it looks like they have figured out how to use the character within the group framework they kill her off.
I have many problems with the killing off of Tara. In terms of drama it was a backwards step, as it was so badly done it defies logic. As the character had more growth and dramatic potential it was a backwards step for the show to let a dramatically important character go when there was more gold to be spun from her. As for the argument over the "Dead/Evil Lesbian" cliche, I will say this: I do not believe that it was ever the writers intention to be homophobic, nor was there intention to make some subliminal or subconscious criticism of same-sex relationships. This is important because intent is one of the indicators of the cliche. However, all the other indicators in terms of what was shown on screen are there, and the writers claiming that they are not there is simply folly. It may not have been there intention, but in Tara's death/Willow's vengeance (and one could even say Xander's "yellow crayon" speech which re-enforces the Freudian cliche) the writers have left the world not just with an example of how the "Dead/Evil Lesbian" cliche looks, but have in my view delivered the definitive version of how it looks. For a show that took pride in usurping cliche, this is perhaps the saddest indictment of all. I have other problems with it but I have dealt with these within the episodes in which they occur.
With episodes that struggle to even be average by tv's standards, let alone the higher standards set by the previous seasons of Buffy, and with a story arc that is so weak that it doesn't even hold up to even the most basic scrutiny, which for a show of Buffy's standards is unforgiveable.
I am a fan of Buffy but I will admit that I do not own, nor ever shall own, season 6. I have the stand alone DVD of the musical and that's it. It will come as no suprise to the reader that I place this season as absolute bottom of the pile. A woeful effort and really the season that killed the show off.

10:05 am - Buffy Season 5 - Overview!
|

Let's deal with the negatives first. The story arc is strong but doesn't really have much pace which takes the drama out of many of the episodes. Also, Glory is a great baddie but she isn't particularly well used in the latter episodes, content to sit and allow others to be pro-active.
For all of that though, this season really is very good, and it's really the end of Buffy as a show as the last 2 seasons fall off sharply. The principals by this point are comfortable in their roles and even the episodes where very little happens are still enjoyable purely for the performances of the cast.
Special mention must be given here to Michelle Trachtenberg. Many disliked Dawn because she was a brat, completely missing the point. Dawn is meant to be the pain in the neck little sister and Michelle plays her superbly. She is also required to do some pretty strong emotional scenes and these too she handles with real maturity.
The episodes, whilst sometimes lacking pace, still exude confidence and "Fool For Love" and "The Body" continue the trend for brave pieces of television, especially "The Body".
All in all, despite it's flaws, this is still a strong season and whilst it does have overt soap opera moments in it, it at least handles them with real emotion. I place it 2nd in my list of seasons, bettered only by the epic that is season 3. However, it doesn't beat season 4 by much.

8:11 am - Fanfiction

Hi! My name is Tennya and I wanted to say hello and I'm really looking forward to reading some great fics and posting some of my own and getting feedback.
What I wanted to post here was the first few pages of a fiction that I have been working on for roughly almost five years, on and off, writing and rewriting. It is called Aldora's Destiny and it follows Willow and Tara's daughter Aldora who is a champion and all through her trails and struggles, her powers, her family, the Powers That Be and the Guardians, hoping to one day fulfill her destiny, though she isn't even quiet sure what that is.
There is much girl on girl loving but the main thing I wanted to warn you about was that Willow/Tara and are a constant theme throughout this epic story but after the first forty pages or so they fade away and the story focus on Aldora since this story is all about her.
So now that I'm done with all of my warnings, I leave you with this cut.
( What if, after the car crash, Buffy didn't turn around and help Willow? What if she just walked away? )
