    FUTUREPUNK: 2 days to go!!!!
You'll be noticing that the lineup has changed, because Katscan have gone and broken up. Yes, permanently. But that's OK because we sent emissaries to the world of fine art to drag (no... ah, actually, yes, pun intended. Sorry..) Tarantella Serpentine out of retirement! And my, does his new shit rock.

    casony royale
Despite being a two-hour advert for Sony products from laptops to phones to cameras (and being preceded by slightly more overt adverts for the former two of those products), the new James Bond film is actually rather good...

Taking the Batman Begins line, this brings us to the beginning of Bond's double '0' career (in fact showing us the kill that gives him the licence to kill - though not sure how you can kill someone to get a licence to do so). The first few minutes, all in black and white, are pretty violent - basically a message to us that this isn't the Bond we've seen before, and the first colour comes in the form of the familiar blood running down the screen. The title sequence is in the traditional sixties-style animation, though with a few computer effects added (nothing garish).

The rest of the film is a mix of homage to previous films, explanations of how-things-came-to-be (attitude towards women, partiality to Martini, Aston Martins) though all of it is contemporary - M bemoans the passing of the cold war, and the modern world situation.

    steampunk hits the mainstream
Steampunk as a genre is somewhere between forty and fifteen years ago, depending on who what viewpoint you take. Either way, it seems to be hitting the public consciousness (even if they're not going to know the term).
Hot on the heels of Steamboy (and LXG, I suppose) comes a film, The Prestige featuring David Bowie in a supporting role as Nikolai Tesla.

There are an increasing amount of pages linking to the Wikipedia entry on Steampunk, including those reporting on the Streampunk laptop and the Andreas' Personal Flying Suit Project - subtitled a Monocopter, which makes it sound more like an ornothopter, but essentially it's a steampunk jet pack.

    Brass Goggles

Some steampunk afficionados aren't satisfied with reading or seeing steampunk designs, or even creating objects that have the appearance of engines - one person builds actual working stream machines at Crabfu.

    more gothic online comics
Another batch of comic Gothery. I was going to put online comics only on here, but a few others came up and I wasn't going to put a non-online section in, so they got lumped in here too...

Goth's High (sic) a Goth High School (or did I post that before?)

Write and Shine used to live on geocities, you've all probably heard of it by now).

The Bedsit Journal - apparently features Goth characters at some point, though I've not stumbled over them yet.

Goth Boy - mostly concept sketches, who knows if it'll amount to anything more?

GlamourLust angels having sex (featuring fairies). Probably not worksafe, but not out-and-out porn as you may have inferred from that description - no actual Goth-types in it from what I can tell.

    Grayling

Night Falls on Jericho Described as an Urban gothic fantasy set in a decaying future world - pity the webpage 404ed...

Noctropolis - in colour, not sure if it's online or deadtree, supposed a bit like Veil, (except that's a dead link, so no idea what either are like).

Shon Howell & Milk - Black Cats: Never Lucky is a physical product, featuring Victorian loligoths, including stories: The Wondrous Age - steampunk adventure; Haurgh House - a Gothic romance (or parody thereof).

    Flesh Field
This is a band I've encountered on a compilation album (Goth Paradise IV) and nowhere else. My Savior (sic, maybe) is an infectuously catchy song which I just had to find out more about last time it came up on random.

From musicbrainz I discover it might actually be My Saviour, and that it comes from the album Viral Extinction.

Wikipedia is pretty useful as well...

    Flesh Field )

This is that song what I have - when I looked online for lyrics there appeared to be a whole other set, which could conceivably be shoe-horned into the same tune...

    goth band histories
Metal website Imperiumi.net has published a history of My Dying Bride (described as doom-gothic metal, amongst others)

thegauntlet does a similar history of Lacrimas Profundere, but in the form of an answer to a question. Not entirely sure what the question was, maybe it got left out during copying-and-pasting somewhere along the line? Either that or it's the second part of a longer article, with no link to the earlier section.

theind (ependent Weekly) interviews deadboy and the Elephantmen, blues and Southern goth, though it's always difficult to tell what they mean by Goth (then again, that could be levelled at Goths too).

Never mind the wilds of Afghanistan and rogue mosques - the latest generation of terrorists is being trained in Gothic manor houses (allegedly). Only in the comments section of the Daily Mail will you see someone seriously use the phrase Johnny Foreigner.

The Goth label sure gets attached to a lot of things these days. Of course, many of these are based more on literary or celluloid genre than post-punk yoof movements.

    more on goth comics
Gloomcookie issue 28 will be the last issue, but don't fret, for there shall be forthcoming graphic novels - it's just the end of the regular series.

Not really comics, more a marketing tool, but Emily the Strange has now released a record, or more accurately a compilation of music that Emily would listen to if she was y'know, real and stuff.
Apparently she (would) listen to Black Heart Procession (who?), the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Damned, Dresden Dolls and Nick Cave.
Having said it isn't really comics, there has been one release: Emily the Strange: Lost, Dark and Boring

Still don't know anything about Dame Darcy - hadn't heard of her until I was doing research for that last post, but I've found out a little more now. She was born in Caldwell, Idaho in 1971 and is a member of two bands, called Death by Doll and Cabin Fever (who do sea shanties) though has also been in another band called Aye Aye Captain.
She has created a number of comics.
    The dot com
Meat Cake - ongoing series, up to at least issue 15.
    Frightful Fairytales.
Gasoline - was being touted around the publishers, probably found one by now.
The Illustrated Jane Eyre - adaptated from Charlotte Brontë.
    Dollerium.
Offbeat Brands - her own Japanese fashion label.
    comicbookresources interview .
    bookslut interview.

Must remember to find out what Ladyfest is sometime, sounds ren faire to me.

    goth comics roundup
This is a list of comics described as Goth in various usenet groups. Mostly I've put it together so I can use it to revise my webpage on Goth comics. Feel free to make any suggestions (or cast aspersions on the suitability of the following for the list).

    goth in the media roundup
News of a new band called The Vincent Black Shadow, named after a 1948 British motorcycle (not mentioned in the article, I suspect the author thinks it's just a horror-punk name and nothing else).
They've just release their debut single Fears in the Water on Her Royal Majesty’s Records/Bodog Music. Described as visually Gothic and sounding like the Dresden Dolls, Blondie and No Doubt with sounds from ska, jazz new wave and hard rock.

Another new band, Department of Eagles have released their debut single Romo Goth. Despite the title it's supposedly indie-electronica compared only to Radiohead and features a tin drum machine, guitars and crooning vocals.

Over to more established bands, and Within Temptation have just played a Games Convention in Leipzig (they also have two tracks on an upcoming computer game, The Chronicles of Spellborn).

Depending on your viewpoint, some bands are Goth, others aren't, that doesn't affect media reportage though: Muse's latest album and a recent concert get a review (the album being Black Holes and Revelations).

    AFI, Hunter Burgan interview

Away from the world of music...

In amongst the condemnations of Harry Potter by Father Gabriele Amorth, chief exorcist at the Vatican are mentions of a vampire subculture being a spin-off of the seventies Goth movement.

Apparening in New York fringe theatre, Band Geeks: A Halftime Musical features a token late eighties Goth chick and pseudo folk-punk song Blister in the Sun (likened to Violent Femmes).

Oh, and there's also been a Goth Pride protest in Parliament Square, but only as part of a wider anti-anti-protest protest. Strangely the Goth Pride bit doesn't appear in that report any more - wonder what happened to it?

    themes
Funny how different films, written by different writers, directed by different directors and distributed by different studios but released at the same time can have so many things in common, isn't it?

F'rinstance there seems to be a vogue for twists right now, where you think you know the characters but they turn out not to be who you think they were, or to have different motivations. In those cases I like to see the film again, to see whether it changes how I view it. Here's what I've seen lately.

    sex scenes and teen flicks

How often does a movie appear at your local (mainstream) cinema where you can watch a couple having actual sex? How often does the same film contain dead bodies, again not simulated? This one has both, and what's more children can go and watch it, unaccompanied by their parents!
