Okay, so I feel incredibly stupid! I have an article, but it's not really informative, and is slightly inaccurate. (I've made some changes in my fursona's profile, height and stuff)
My problem is, one, I don't remember my account or password for the Wiki, and two, honestly I don't know how to edit a wiki properly. The most is type in info, I can't organize it or anything like that. I mean I'd even prefer to use a different picture for the page, but I don't know how to do any of that- it's all way to complex for me to comprehend. >.<
There some stuff that I'd like to add, like how I'm an avid gamer, a fan of the Kirby and Metroid series. basic stuff like that. But I dunno how, is it okay if I just type stuff and let others handle the editing..? I feel so awkward right now!

do i have to dress up to go to an activity?

i haven't been on lj for about 2 years and I've been trying to figure out how to join or get involved or even become a furry i see allot of people on vcl who have "characters" and they are SO CUTE! my friend went to FurCon in Tacoma some years back and i wanted to go do but their car broke down and had to get a smaller one so there wasn't enough room for me.

i really want to know as much as possible so please don't call me a n00b or get mad at me.

Canada.com's Alex Blonski apparently feels that Second Life introduced the gaming world to furries, and decides to link to our Second Life article to prove it. Obviously he's never heard of Furcadia or Inherit the Earth. :-)

WikiFur Meetup at Anthrocon 2008: Friday 8PM-11:30

The Meetup is returning to Anthrocon! Join WikiFur's administrators and contributors this Friday from 8PM-11:30, as we discuss the future of furry fandom's encyclopedia.

A key topic will be our upcoming host change. We'll be talking about why we're moving, where we're going, and what you can do to help (hint: use en.wikifur.com in links from now on).

We'll also be tackling issues of policy and organization, and making plans for upcoming projects and events, including WikiFur's third anniversary celebrations. There'll be plenty of time for other topics, too - so if you've got questions, drop by and speak up!

The Meetup will be held in a suite at the Westin. Check the personals notice board under W for the room number. Minors may attend until 10:30, after which alcohol may be served. Light refreshments (not a proper meal substitute) will be available throughout the event.

Hello all!

I am really sorry, this message maybe not at all about this community's matters, but I just use any chance and ask everywhere I can.

In 1996-1998 I was a member of furry fandom and a furry artist (well at least I thought so) from Russia, named Lancid, I think no one could remember this name today, but well, I was pretty well known :). I have left the whole furry theme in june 1998 during the Burned Fur scandal, that wasn't the reason actually. Haven't drawn a piece of art since then, and haven't contacted anyone from furry fandom also.

Why I am here ? Well, during that years I had a friend (well, a t least I described her a friend), very famous furry artist Nami Jarrett also known as Omega Red. She left fandom just shortly before me (actually about a week before me) and totally disappeared. I know this is very stupid of me to search for someone on the other side of ocean, someone I have never even see in real life (and I guess never will actually), but well, I really would like to find her again. No idea why, but I miss her somehow.

If anyone, by the cnahce, know anything about her, please, let me know. Or, if anyone, by a smallest chance, have her contacts, let her know that one who was Lancid looking for her.

Hello everyone!

I went through WikiFur tonight and edited my RL name out of every entry that mentioned me. I'd prefer to just be known by "XianJaguar" throughout the furry fandom, and not have my RL name mentioned at all, including anywhere in Wikifur.

If folks could start just using my fan name (XianJaguar) and refrain from using my RL name, I'd really appreciate it.

Three-hour downtime tonight

WikiFur's host will upgrading network facilities for a three hour period tonight and tomorrow morning, starting at 11PM PDT (2AM EDT, 6AM UTC). WikiFur may be inaccessible for part or all of this time. If you get caught in the middle of an edit and a save times out on you, try resubmitting by refreshing the page every now and again until it goes through.

While not directly related, you can also check out a recent forum post for a graph of improvements on the server side of things, before it gets to the network (they halved the response time to keep the random page clicker demographic happy).

WikiFur gets a fair number of visitors, but most come from the same sites on a day-to-day basis - so when I see a new site coming up on Analytics, I take a look. (This sometimes surprises people who don't know that web browsers tell websites where they came from.)

Occasionally, I run into sites that are restricted in some way. FilePile appears to be one of the more extreme examples. Apparently, this music and image sharing and discussion site is meant to be a big secret (although the owner is known). I suspect their secretive nature is born of a need for bandwidth restriction, or a wish to keep the community as it is - and out of the sight of the RIAA. Referrer links suggest they have over 530,000 files and 175,000 discussions right now - and for the geeks out there, it looks like it uses Ruby on Rails.

Given that the file was linked from a thread entitled "jesus f*** someone actually thought about and proceeded to DRAW this.jpg", I don't think the poster's opinion is that much of a secret. Ah, well. I rather like it myself. :-)

IMVU advertising to WikiFur readers?

I knew they were advertising to furs, but I didn't think I'd see this . . .

They have a landing page at www.imvu.com/register which appears to be devoted to furry avatars, too (the regular one is at www.imvu.com/signup). Personally, I'm not sure they can compete with Second Life, but it's interesting that they're trying.

For those of you interested in picking up a little work experience - or possibly even making a little money out of your hobby - our current host Wikia has several positions open.

On offer are work-from-home internships (either Chinese or Japanese speaking, or those familiar with the entertainment scene) as well as community development, product manager, PHP/Web developer and marketing manager positions on location at their San Mateo, California offices. The internships are not regularly paid but may receive a stipend and/or lead to a full-time job, while the rest are regular jobs.

A trick you may not be aware of: WikiFur has search gadgets that can be added to your browser search box and selected from the dropdown menu. This lets you search the site from a click of a button.

Want to look up a name, or the details of a con? Select "WikiFur" and type away. Even an acronym like AC or MFF will do, if we have a redirect.

To install the gadget the on the latest versions of IE and Firefox, go to WikiFur, click the dropdown menu next to the search box (the search site icon in Firefox), and select to "Add" WikiFur (don't just select it directly in IE, else it won't stick). If you don't see it, try clicking here.

Wikia image performance problem resolved

A recent upgrade caused some fairly serious problems with pages that used large numbers of images. Some of you may have noticed the flag icons disappearing from Upcoming events - this was a temporary workaround to stop it affecting the front page so badly.

This problem - caused by a failure in MediaWiki's image thumbnails cache code - has now been solved. Page loads should be snappier as a result, particularly on image-heavy pages such as the featured articles, comics and convention resources (again with the flag icons).

Editted and expanded an article

Kitto was being and insomniac tonight, doing insomniac things. Kitto decided to look up Kitto's favorite animal on WikiFur and was sourly disappointed by the 3 paragraph entry. So, Kitto tossed the sleeping pills and expanded the article using the original citation and a new one. Since Kitto's new to editing Wiki articles, Kitto didn't know much about the coding and left a lot of that alone, but Kitto has watched the article. The more people learn about fennec, the happier Kitto will be. However, Kitto's not confident about his writing ability and would like it proof read.

Kitto will be adding more information later on, such as basal metabolic rate and common pathological problems that occur in fennec in captivity. Assuming Kitto finds Kitto's old research material ( published reports mostly ).

GFDL may change to be compatible with CC-BY-SA

Recent resolutions and announcements by the Wikimedia Foundation (which runs Wikipedia) suggest that a new version of the GNU Free Documentation License will be released that is compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License. This is something that they Wikimedia has been working towards with the Free Software Foundation (the maintainers of the GFDL) for some time.

WikiFur's policy is that anyone may distribute our written content under the terms of the GFDL 1.2 or any later version. People may therefore use any published (non-draft) version of the GFDL that states such compatibility. This would still mean they have to attribute WikiFur by name and link to us, and they would have to tell others that they could copy and modify the content as well, but they would not have to reproduce the full version of the GFDL (which is technically required right now).

As the license changes are not yet available, I do not know if they will require community discussion before the above compatibility take effect. If they do, I'll be sure to let you know. :-)

Going to MFF? Come meet your fellow editors as we discuss the past, present and future of furry fandom's free encyclopedia!

This year's Meetup will be held Saturday 10PM-Midnight in the WikiFur Administrator room, number to be posted on the message board under "W". Attendance is not restricted to current members - if you're curious, feel free to drop in and ask a few questions. We don't bite. :-)

The first few contributors to arrive will receive a free gift, and perhaps a morsel* to eat. If you got a WikiFur badge at Anthrocon, don't forget to bring it to the con - it not, come early and there may still be some left. Hurry, though, as supplies are strictly limited!
