Following my post here, I've finally completed the wig in question.

Here's an image of the wig in use.
The base is by Amphigory, with white silky yaki from Doc Locks that has been sewn through in places, as well as added in whefts. Darker grey parts were done via Sharpie marker.

From a different angle, with ears from Katie Bair's store.

I definately need to go over the darker grey bits again with the Sharpie, though I am also thinking of investing in some of Katie Bair's wig dye.

I need a bit of help and I felt that this may be the best place to look for it.

A good friend of mine's sister has cancer and is starting to have kemo. The friend of mine is very long long hair and is planning on cutting it all off so that she can have a wig made for her sister.

so in school, we covered the wig and extensions chapter. last year, my teacher had a contest/'fashion show' for the wigs the students made. everyone picks a theme for inspiration and makes their wig based around that idea. i did Rainbow Bright Finds the Secret Garden. i got second place. $25 mac gift card, cant complain.

Sakura Wigs (The Company not The Character)

Well, I searched for info on Sakura Wigs, but all that came back was wigs for a character named Sakura and nothing about the wig company called: Sakura Wigs, so I'm starting this post to ask about them.

I was thinking of buying a Sakura Wigs unstyled wig http://sakurawigs.com/wigs_unstyled.php and styling it myself. I was wondering, though, before I do this, has anyone here ever bought an unstyled wig from this company? If so, what could you tell me about them?

How does the fiber quality compare to other wig companies? Are they any easier or harder to style than other companies?

I'm planning to buy two or possibly three of their wigs (each a different color: B05, B06, W01) and using one as a "base wig", and the second and third wig I'll be cutting the fibers out of, and using to blend with the fibers of the first wig. In other words I'm essentially taking the two wigs apart and making one wig out of them, more or less making my own wig from scratch, so to speak. Has anyone ever tried using one of these wigs do do anything like this before? If so, how did that work out?

Or, I may just totally disassemble all three of them and make my own wefts and build the whole wig from scratch, not using any of these as a base at all.

If anyone has bought any wigs from this company, could you share any experiences you had with the company? (Good or bad.) Fast shipping? Slow shipping? Customer service? Communication? Can you think of anything else to tell me about this company and their wigs, that I didn't think to ask?

I want a super pale nearly white, icy blue wig, and I think I can make the look I want by using the three wig color blend they sell. I have looked and looked, but I just can't find 50" long wafts in the shades of blue I want, except for in these wigs here, which is why I plan to buy the wigs and disassemble them, unless of course anyone knows where I can find wefts in those colors that are long enough. (This wig is for my Lord Sesshomaru costume and his hair is 50" - 60" long... so far the longest wefts I've seen are 48", so I'll have to settle for making his hair shorter.)

I still have a bit more work to do on my wig. I plan to add more of the white wibers through-out using the silky white kanelon I got from Dr.Locks, I also plan to dye some of the natural wig fibers using the sharpe method, a deeper grey than what is seen here.

The wig is the Alyssa wig from Amphigory, which Katie Bear managed to send to me through her service. I might refine the bangs a bit more by razoring them, just to give them that softer edge.

Again, going for the look that corresponds to the image:

You'll pardon the coke bottle I hope. I do wish I could have blended the white better than it is without ruining the curl, so it's my plan, like stated above, to add some dark grey to the under layers, and then a layer of white attached to the mesh cap.
I'll then use a scrunchy to pull back the hair loosely, wrap it into big rollers and use the hot water method to shape them.

I've recently purchased a few braids of kankelon "jumbo braid". Whilst i'm amazed at the colours and the sheer amoount of hair I got for my money....it doesn't really look like the pictures on the website (straight) its got a very slight sort of....kink about it. Whilst this is fine and dandy for what i need it for is it possible for me to do anything to the hair e.g. brushing it with a fine toothed comb, ironing/straightening it on a low temp setting etc.
I'm just curious....

So I'm going to be making one of these girls from Apocalypto for one of my MA assignments. I'm going as far as doing the hair and costume as well. The costume I'm not scared of doing - the hair though is another story. How would I do this? I know I wrap synthetic hair or yarn around a bendable tube - but what is this tube exactly? And would it be light enough for the head?

Also - how would you do the ear plugs? I could sculpt them and make a cast, but what would I make the positive out of that would be light enough for false stretch lobes?

Newbie looking for advice: Side-Swept Bangs

Hello folks!

Newbie here, though I do have some previous experience with synthetic hair peices, This is my first wig attempt.
Thought I'd get a general consensus on the idea of how to effectively do side-swept bangs.

The idea I am going for, imagine wise with my wig, is From Linsner's Dawn, the photo refrence is Here. This is a LARP wig, for a Gangrel character I've been playing for a while now. I want to step up the bar for costuming with my local game, hence I want to go the distance with the wig. I've always imagined my character having this sort of wild and rustic look about her, and that image of Dawn definately does it.

Now, I already have the Alisa Wig in Platinum Grey, and plan to add Snow White Yaki Switch in either no-sew wefts or High-lights. (Not sure which at this point. Highlights would be great, but no sew wefts would add the splashes of brightness on movement.)

EITHER WAY, I'd like to cut in Side Swept Bangs for this sort of idea, and while I have the general principal for regular bags, I'm having a hard time figuring out the side-swept idea.

Should I use a deep part, "tap" blowdry in place, cut and then curl the ends with the blow dryer? Should I try using the hot water method? I'd like to retain some of the wig's natural curl, so I'm not so sure I'd like to use the hot water method.
Would thinning shears be better or should I go with a razor? "Scoop scoop" cut?

Ideas would be great.

P.S. Appologies to those of you who may have seen this posted over at Katie Bair's forums as well.

Edited 02/ 03/ 2008: Today I found a link to Tristen Citrine's page on how to make antenna bangs, which happens to also have a tutorial on how to cut regular bangs into a wig. This tutorial is exactly what I've been looking for, and I am so glad I was able to find it. Minus the antenna of course....I don't want those.

My Rocky Horror shadow cast is doing Moulin Rouge next year at the end of February. I'm doing the few wigs we need. This is one of seven or eight. First I've finished. :D

Meet the Green Fairy. :D Blonde synthetic wig, about upper back length. Pulled half-up into a braided bun and beaded with absynthe-green glass beads.

Here is my new favorite addition to my hair piece collection!

I started with a long black synthetic ponytail as my base and used the large 5.5mm linkies to add some silky straight kanekalon emerald highlights. I added the leopard print pin-up flower as the finishing touch!

Applying Foamcore to a wig.

Hello I'm new to this community and I would like to say that I am thankful that this community exist. I am really interested in wig making and oneday I would love to start my own wig making bussiness. I have a question regarding adding foamcore to wigs. I am aware of the stubbing method on Katie Bair site in order to add the styrofoam balls to the wig, but when it comes to the fun foam or "Foamies" how on earth do I add the wig fiber to them, then the foam/fiber onto a wig?. A good example whould be a wig with spikes that are thick let's say Goku from Dragon ball or Ryoko from Tenchi Muyo. Could anyone help me on this because I am stumped on this technique and I am afarid to try it out without any knowlege of this. Thanks ^-^

Hi all,

I'm looking for inspiration for a wig to wear when I get married. I really want to have the most amazing hair style, however because of a conservative job I can't really risk dying my natural hair, so the obvious answer is a wig.

Do any of you have links etc. to places of inspiration? I have plenty of books on vintage fashion, so I'm looking for more outragous and stunning styles. I'm more than happy to buy books (so long as they're reasonably priced) or get myself to a library, so book titles are also welcomed :o)

I'm trying to style a wig for KumoriCon, I'm going as Sephiroth, however I can't figure out how to get the bangs how I want them (see here) without using gel. I've heard of hot water treating it, and using very low blow drying on it with curlers. But what would work the best?

Has anyone used hot water treating? (Btw, its a kanekalon wig, Eleora Godiva.)

Hallo! :D I've just started in on styling wigs. I had done a few little things, little trims, ponytails, etc.

Today I launched into a small fix/restyle of a wig I recieved a few months ago. It's a Columbia wig for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. By I recieved it, it had been in a box for a few months and was squashed and the style was totally lost.

It took four washings to get the gel the woman used on it mostly out of the wig. It was still stiff and kind of yuck when I started working on it, but I didn't want to trash it with wash after wash. Anyway, it started out as a chin-length A-line bob, which wasn't entirely screen accurate. Columbia wears her hair very short, and I didn't like ahving to spit out hair when I performed. I parted it down the middle to cut it and discovered that bunches of hair on the skin top had been cut down to about an eighth of an inch. I understand the reasoning, to lay the hair flat, but it made it really hard to re-find the original left-side part.

I cut slight layers into the front and blended it down along the sides to match the back length. I have to keep it longer than her hair should be because the wig is -so- thin in the back. Once I was finished cutting it, I started moving the part to the left side of the wig in layers. I used a hair dryer on each layer to lay it flat until I got the part where I wanted it. then I smoothed it out and hair sprayed the hellout of it. :D I don't have any before pictures, but here's the after(with some quick 'n dirty makeup!), along with a picture of Little Nell as Columbia:

All-in-all, I'm pretty happy with it. :D Short wigs are hard to do, from what I've seen. I want to try my hand at getting a longer wig and making another Columbia wig (with the skin top intact), and make a few wefts to thicken the back so I can have it a little shorter. We'll see what happens.

My next project is Chiana from Farscape. :D

Wendy Darling wig

I am looking for a wig as similar as possible to Wendy Darling's (from Peter Pan)... I've searched high and low and haven't found anything, so I'm turning to the experts! Light brown, ringlet curl ponytail... at this point, the bangs in front are optional. The ringlet ponytail is the most important part!

I'm throwing this out to a few places here and there because I am stuck. Even after much research I can find nothing so I need some advice about venting for this project I have.

Anyone whose watched the last two series of Dr Who would have seen the amazingly realistic cat people. I'm making a similarish project for an up and coming film but am at a loss as to how I would attatch the hair to the face. Its a latex face and the only way I can think is to vent the hair onto maybe a wig lace over the latex (a little like how a crepe hair beard would be made I suppose)

Would this be possible as the hair is incredibly short and anyone know what would be the best hair to use? I was thinking crepe hair as I've used it in a CATS style wig and it looks very much like fur.

Looking closely at the picture I don't think that venting could be the right option but....I've got to at least ask right?

Human Hair Wigs

Hello!

Im interested in purchasing a human hair wig, mainly because I dye my hair pink every summer (since school doesnt allow it!) and I'll be graduating this year, so I can have pink hair forever (or for more than 2 months!)
While my current job doesn't mind absurd colored hair, I don't plan on making my living in retail.

I've found some very nice real human hair wigs on ebay, and was interested in anyone's opinion on them.
Do they stay place? Are they itchy? What if I get a skin cap for the wig? Does it make your head sweat? Do they really look real?

This is the wig I'm interested in purchasing, because it's basically my color hair and style!

Any input would be great. Thanks so much!
