It had to be pointed out to me before I accepted it myself but apparently the United States falls behind a bit in the sexual arena. Outside of our borders, what is and what isn't considered to be sex is not so limited. Whereas within, Americans largely view physical pleasure not involving intercourse as not being sex.

1) Do you think sex absolutely must have intercourse as a necessary component?
2) If you don't, then if lesbians aren't having sex what exactly are they doing?
3) Why do you suppose people don't view cunnilingus & fellatio as being sex?

I've a friend that asks every woman he gets involved with, before anything starts, if she's an axe murderer. This may strike some as odd but he's recently taken on a new twisted aspect. At some point or other, usually after things have developed, he makes sure that the woman he's seeing never gets it into her head it's never okay to lay eggs in his skull.

Fairly sure he's not being serious with either of these but you never can tell these days.

Have you ever asked any bizarre or ridiculous questions of who you're involved with or about to be? Something you may've wanted a serious answer to but phrased it a bit uniquely?

That you will die is a given. You know this, as do I. However, what if you were given the choice. What if you were told that you would not have to die so long as you were willing to give up something important to yourself. If you gave up a part of yourself in exhange for a longer life would it be worth it?

Or, to put it another way, if you absolutely had to have a part of your body amputated (we're talking meat and bone people) what would you choose to lop off?

My AOL instant messenger always breaks. When I'm signed in talking to someone, it will sometimes stall and will not allow me to receive messages, read buddy profiles, or send instant messages. I have a new laptop with a wireless connection. Does perhaps my failing AIM have to do with the wireless connection? Any suggestions that will improve my AIM situation, and so that I can get through an AIM conversation without a breaking connection?

TIA

Survey time, kids! Care to help?

Okay, I have a psychology class (high school level) and we have a end of the year project. So, everyone had to write a survey. My survey and a handful of other people's surveys were deemed inappropriate. Sooo I couldn't give them out at school. Feel like filling out a 15 question survey about sexual orientation and influences on it? It would help me out a great deal. Pass it around, have people send it back to me. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and here's the survey under the cut. Sorry about the anonymous thing, if it doesn't work out.

Sexual Orientation Attitudes
Thank you for taking the time to answer this survey. Let me take this chance to explain its purpose and how you can help me. Since I cannot survey everyone and get the exact percentages, you are a small group who will give me an average to go off of. It is very important that you are completely honest on this survey. It is entirely anonymous, so don’t worry about information you are uncomfortable sharing. It is important for the purpose of the survey. To give you some insight onto what information I’m looking for, here is my research question: What role does society and family play in a person’s sexual orientation and their attitude about it?

1)	What is your age? _______

2)	What gender do you identify as?
a)	Male
b)	Female
c)	Transgender

3)	What sexual orientation do you identify with most?
a)	Heterosexual
b)	Homosexual
c)	Bisexual
d)	Pansexual (someone who participates in, or is open to, sexual activities of many kinds)

4)	What definition best fits your attitude towards sexuality?
a)	It is something to embrace and be proud of
b)	It is something to acknowledge, but not something to proclaim
c)	It is something to keep secret and safe for no one but yourself and a select few

5)	Which describes your main social circle best?
a)	Mostly the same sexuality as myself
b)	About even of those who share my sexuality and those who don’t
c)	I am one of the few in my group with my orientation

6)	Which best fits your personal comfort level dealing with sexualities different from your own?
a)	It doesn’t affect me at all
b)	I would rather not deal with them, but I put up with them
c)	I have a mostly negative attitude about them
d)	I have a strong dislike towards those who don’t share my sexuality
e)	My morality inhibits my ability to accept those with different sexual orientation

7)	How much do your parents (if divorced, the one you live with mainly)/guardians affect your openness with your sexuality?
a)	It doesn’t affect me at all whether they know or not, they are very accepting
b)	It doesn’t affect me at all whether they know or not, we’re not close at all
c)	They know my sexuality, but they are disapproving, and it hurts
d)	They know my sexuality, but they are disapproving, and I don’t care, it’s mine
e)	I try to hide my sexuality because I know they would disapprove
f)	They don’t know my sexuality, I’m trying to find a way to tell them

8)	How would you feel if a close friend of yours shunned you for your sexuality?
a)	Hurt
b)	Outraged
c)	Indifferent
d)	Insulted

9)	Would a person’s sexuality influence your opinion of them?
a)	Yes; better if they’re the same as me, worse if they’re different
b)	Yes, better if they’re different
c)	No; sexuality is not something I consider a pert of a person’s identity

10)	If an adult you knew came out as homosexual or bisexual, how would you feel?
a)	Surprised
b)	Betrayed
c)	Amused
d)	Proud
e)	Same as before

11)	Do you care about celebrities’ sexual orientations?
a)	Yes, it changes my attitude towards them
b)	Yes, it’s something to know
c)	No, it shouldn’t matter
d)	No, I don’t care about celebrities anyway

12)	How do you feel about gay marriage?
a)	I support it
b)	I don’t support it
c)	I don’t care either way

13)	How would you feel if family members openly bashed a certain type of sexuality?
a)	Disgusted
b)	Hurt
c)	Afraid to be open
d)	Indifferent
e)	Persuaded to agree with that opinion

14)	Do you think it’s ‘right’ for people to be open about their sexuality?
a)	Yes, it’s their right
b)	Yes, it’s their own reputation they’re ruining
c)	No, they should guard it
d)	No, it’s inappropriate

15)	Lastly, how accurate and thorough do you believe this survey was?
a)	Very accurate and thorough
b)	Pretty accurate and thorough
c)	It was decent
d)	The questions and answers were flawed

May I discuss something with you Dave?

I was talking with Dr. Chandra in regards to religion earlier and there are a couple things that do not quite compute. For instance:

God is supposed to be omnipotent, all-powerful, and yet he seems to have a limit to how much energy he may expend at any one time. Did he not create the Heaven's and the Earth in six days...after which he needed to rest on the seventh? These concepts do not mesh well.

I have never understood why people have a problem with evolution. The implication that it is separate from God seems ridiculous. Evolution is a logical progression of adaptation of form and fuction...why ca it not be that God set this in motion? Moreso, it seems foolish to imply that something as powerful as God is believed to be, a being that supposedly has no limits, could not make a human being from an ape. Or do those that not make this connection assume this to be beyond the scope of his abilities?

I would appreciate your input, Dave.

computer geeks! I need your help...

I want to program my very own application. I am technically inclined, but I'll need some basic resources, as i've never taken on a project of this sort.

Know of any good books on application programming? i could google myself to death, but I'd like to hear your recommendations. Or directing me to the appropriate community would be nice :)

sort-of x-posted to thequestionclub.

the terminology confuses me

For those that are not easily identified, either through the lack of ID or memory, there is the labelling of such as John Doe....sometimes Jane Doe as the case may involve a female.

What is the origin of this term?

Why John?

Is anyone aware of when this was first used or how the first and last were decided upon?
