i have a set of flip/flop wheels i'm getting rid of.
they are sun swift rims (Deep-V profile) laced to velocity hubs. there is a single-speed freewheel included.
front wheel has never been rode, the back wheel was rode for three days. i ordered them while i built my current wheelset but ended up finishing it sooner than i had thought.
they are a good solid wheels. i am asking $190 for them (they originally were bought for like 240-250), but might take other offers (won't go much lower). if you live in the nyc area i will deliver them to you, otherwise we'll figure out shipping.

x-posted

I built this last summer, but I just now got a picture of it. That works out because I just painted the frame too, so it looks all nice and pretty:

Anyway, this was my father's bike in the late 80's and early 90's, but he fell off of it and cracked his skull open so it hung in our garage for about 14 or 15 years (Lesson: always wear a helmet!). I got my hands on it and figured the best way to bring it back to life would be to make a fixed gear out of it.

It's a mid-eighties Miyata Two-Ten frame made from steel tubing, with the cable guides removed to give it that sleek track look. The handlebars, front break, cranks, front wheel, and seat are all original. I hand-built the rear wheel back in July or August with a cheap 27" Nashbar rim on an '89 Maillard hub (by the way, for $15, that rim has held up better than I could ever imagine, it's in great shape). It's got a 16t Shimano 3/32" track cog in the back, and the original 42t chainwheel in the front. It's geared a little low for flat-land, but I can get up just about any hill, which is good for where I live (Santa Cruz).

This bike kicks major ass. It rolls really well. Some people here helped me out when I built it, and I want to thank you again.

Oh, and an obligatory shot of the drivetrain:

Would a fixie still work for a hilly locale?
2. Since it's hilly, how scary would descents be-would a good front brake help?
3. Would this one make a good candidate? I've seen some of these in The Fixed Gear Gallery.

Selling my wheel

This is a beautifully smooth handbuilt Formula flip-flop hub laced 3-cross with Dt Swiss double butted spokes to Sun Venus rim(same style as velocity deep v). The only thing faulty with the wheel is I stripped the fixed side of the hub using a faulty track cog. The freewheel side have never been touched and is looking great. This wheel retails at over 150$. The sealed hub is still running smooth as ever and the rim and spokes might as well be new. I'm asking 60$ which is a steal considering the rim alone is 50$.
email me at:
twodollars-27cents@riseup.net
thanks,
Jake

track frame needed

Hey, I was wondering if anyone has (or knows anyone who has) a 49cm track frame they don't want/need/would be willing to sell.

I recently had my bike stolen from the back of my house while I was home, in the middle of nowhere Virginia (Blacksburg). It's been about a month since it was stolen and I've been having horrible luck getting/finding parts. I flyered, called the police, and called every bike shop and pawn shop within 20 miles, but it's gone. It's just odd. I live in a town with maybe 10 fixed gears, in a house miles off campus, on a street with no foot traffic and on top of a very large hill. Anyway, I haven't had luck on eBay or craigslist, or anywhere else for that matter. My bike was pretty much my only mode of transportation, besides walking, and it was the only thing that kept my head on straight. So if you have a small frame, or know someone who does, please contact me.

Thanks,
Caroline

crossposted on bikepirates

I have a story.

I go to the University of California at Santa Cruz, and I live on campus. The University is nestled into a large hill.

Anyway, I needed to go into town yesterday. My old trusty 10-speed was low on tire pressure, and since I didn't have time to fix it I decided to take my fixed-gear down my first big hill, the hill that leads up to campus and down to the city below.

I will say that it was not nearly as bad as I had expected. At first I was riding my brake down, but I discovered that my relatively low gearing (71", or 42/16) made it easy to control my speed, though I was spinning well over 200 rpm.

Unfortunately I don't have my clipless shoes here because I forgot them at home, but fortunately I was at the bottom of the hill when my feet fell off of my pedals. My hands were on top of my drop bars, so I couldn't get to the break without loosing my balance. It was pretty scary.

Then I got a brilliant idea. I took my feet and stuck them in the rear triangle against the tire. I began to slow down, eventually enough that I could catch the pedals with my feet and begin spinning again.

When they say to ride with clips or clipless pedals, I now understand what they mean.

check this out:
FSA Vigorelli Crankset
the buy it now price is less than what i paid for it with my shop discount when i was a mechanic (i think i paid about 139 from Quality Bike Products). plus i am including a 45 tooth chainring also. so if you get it at that price your making out because the crankset alone goes for around 200 i believe. i put it on my frameset (Surly Steamroller) and found out cuz the wider chainstay of that frame it would rub. i didn't even have to take it out of the stand and test ride it. so basically this is a brand new crankset. and yeah i called both Surly and FSA and they said the combo would work before i even bought it so their mistake. but anyways its a real nice crankset and i am broke so check it out!

x-posted to bikepirates

Hey there, new LJ here. Glad to see other fixie riders out there. Here's some pics of my converted Fuji Team bike:

This is my main bike. I also have a converted schwinn Le Tour that is my bad weather/beater, with fat fenders, front brake, and detachable toddler seat for my 21 month old daughter.
Enjoy the ride!

Should I or shouldn't I?

A freind is selling his GT FXR4000 mountain bike. It has a pretty green frame and very plush suspension.. but I know next to nothing else about it. I like riding trails and wouldn't mind riding downhill so dual suspension is OK for me. Has anyone owned one of these? How reliable are they?

This is my final hang-up.

Everything I've read says that I will need to get shorter stack bolts if I use the inner gear on my chainwheel (i'm using the double one that's already on the bike). I will probably need spacers to get the alignment to be good, but then it makes it look as though i would need *longer* stack bolts. But everybody says I will need shorter ones. I don't get it. Could somebody explain this a bit better?

Okay...it's been a while, but I have gotten all of the parts I need to build my fixed wheel except spokes. I have also been fortunate enough to get two hubs. That's why I'm posting.

I am asking people's opinions here. I have in my possesion a Suzue Basic flip-flop hub and a '89 Maillard flip-flop hub. The most noticible difference is that the Suzue is a large flange and the Maillard is a small flange.

The Suzue's quality is questionable (I'm sure we all know lots about Suzues), and I've heard that Maillards are good hubs if you can get you hands on them. However, I have also heard that large flange hubs make better fixed-gear wheels.

So what do you think? Is the Maillard better enough that I should use it (which is where I'm leaning right now)? Is the large flange issue just another myth? I'm buying my spokes within the next two days, so the sooner the responses, the better. Thanks a lot, I value your opinions.

To anyone who has converted a bike to a fixie:

How much will it cost to convert my 6speed track bike to a fixed gear with a flipflop hub?
Will I need to buy a shorter chain since my deraulliers will be taken off?

Hi all. I'm new here. My name is Allie and I live in Richmond, VA with my boyfriend, Ryan.

I've been riding for a few months now, although not too much recently due to the horrible Southern heat and humidity! It's my first Richmond summer, gimme a break!

I ride a Fuji frame from the 80s. She's a jumble of parts, i.e. bmx cranks, Phil Wood front hub, IRO rear hub...
My boyfriend rides a Cinelli Olympic track, with parts that I can't afford, i.e. all Campy Record components. The following picture of his bike is from before the overhaul of parts.
