11th-Jul-2009 11:04 am - Just wanted to show off....
brigadier
Though I'm not quite done yet. I've accomplished one wristwarmer, and it was most certainly the most complicated pattern thing I've tried yet! I learned a lot about cabling and following a pattern in this one, by golly. Tadaaah! )

The funny story about this one is that I needed something small that I could work on while I was on the plane. So I've knitting this particular one on the plane to Vancouver, then at the Vancouver airport, then to Japan, then on every shinkansen (bullet train) we took, as well as in some evenings when we were resting from all the walking we did that day. This is a well travelled wrist warmer!

Sorry for the mess in the background, we just moved, and are still unpacking. :\

This is the pattern I used.

Few things in life teach lasting lessons pertaining to quick answers before thinking like promising to knit an item you've never done, not even for yourself, with a pattern that doesn't fit, with a character you've never seen before.

Lesson. Learned.

Except that over the past four months I've learned a bunch of new techniques, which I know I can apply to other projects on hold for one reason or another, and the recipient looked very smashing in it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Operation Faux! Seven made it's debut at CONvergence 2009 in Minnesota over the July 4th Weekend.

The recipient: Rob Callahan, sci-fi/fantasy writer, and all around great guy - who just happens to be my writing partner. I would not have done this for a douchebag.

It's called that because Time Lords have an infinite capacity for pretension. )</div>

If you're on Ravalry, there are more as it happened pics here. Fee free to add me. I like meeting new people.

1st-Jul-2009 04:08 pm - Looking for a pattern...
Specs Appeal, Brainy Glasses, Doctor Who
Okay, I'm doing a HUGE project. Basically I'm crocheting / knitting all 10 Doctors. I'm currently making the 4th Doctor and want to make a scarf for him...

I thought I saw a pattern for Doctor Who scarf that was doll / stuffed animal sized... anyone know what I'm talking about?

Cut for Pic of dolls... )

Thanks in advance!

29th-Jun-2009 03:05 pm - Help?
jared - huh?
I'm trying to find a NZ pattern for fingerless gloves or arm warmers?
I am specifically asking for a NZ pattern because both mum and I have had a lot of trouble figuring out the US patterns (it took about ten attempts to get the Converse Slipper to come out looking half-decent)

Any help would be most appreciated, mostly because I would love to attempt the Tardis gloves I saw posted a while back :D

20th-Jun-2009 02:48 pm - Progress; Operation Faux! Seven- 60%
Baseball
With two weeks left to finish, I'm not in panic mode yet, but I did realize that I was going to need more Teal, and luckily they aren't made according to dye lots. However I'm fairly sure this will be done by July 1 - plenty of time to block and clean up any mistakes - I mean design enhancements.

New teeth. That's weird. So where was I? Oh, that's right --Barcelona! )

You're probably wondering why I'm posting it here. The person it's for knows I'm making it, but doesn't want to see it until it's done, and I need constant reassurance.

Sorry - it's a personality flaw.

9th-Jun-2009 01:18 am - VWORP VWORP!
Timey-Wimey Knitty-Witty
Vinished Vworp Vworp Scarf I took the TARDIS Dishcloth pattern and did it in an acrylic/wool blend worsted yarn. I knit in 1x1 rib for a little over a foot when I realized I only had one skein in this color and it wasn't going to be enough to make a standard 6' scarf. So I went for a little longer in the rib pattern before making a large "button hole". After that I switched to Moss Stitch for another 2.5" to finish off the yarn. (And the scarf, no tassels here.)

Because the Moss Stitch knits up much more loosely then 1x1 rib, the non-TARDIS end flared out wider then the rest of the scarf even with the same number of stitches.

The idea here is that you wrap the scarf around your neck with the TARDIS end going under the Moss Stitch end and through the button hole. (With the right side of the TARDIS design facing out of course.) You then fold and tuck the Moss Stitch bit around the button hole to make it A) look nice and neat, and B) prevent a draft from coming through the button hole.

So there you have it. My first attempt at designing a scarf on the fly.

If I had to do it over again, I would have altered the pattern to do the boarder of the TARDIS bit and the rest of the scarf all in Moss Stitch. I think it would probably hang better with the yarn I used. (Lion's Brand Wool-Ease)

7th-Jun-2009 09:28 pm - Seven Vest ver 2.0 Update
Baseball
So I wanted to give an update on the Operation Faux Seven! vest I was working on a few months back.

Because I suck at math, I got about 30 rounds in and discovered that unless he dropped 40 pounds and had several ribs crushed there was no way he was getting into that vest.  I found the husband and with big brown eyes welling with tears, I asked him to help me with the math. Men like to feel useful, even if it is knitting so he helped.

The new deadline is CONvergence in July and I'm well into the third repeat of the pattern.

As a refresher, this is knitted  in the round in a woven Fair Isle using Nashua Handknits Cilantro (70% Cotton/30% Polyester) on #8 24" circs in Wheat, Teal and Geranium. I *still*  think (ihopeihopeihope) it'll fit a 42-44R.  For obvious reasons I used a provisional cast-on (that lovely purple there) to begin and jumped right into the color work, figuring I didn't want to waste time with two inches of ribbing only to discover (yet again) that it wasn't going to fit.

Let's put this puppy behind a cut, shall we? )
Allison:: Isisworld
I finished this a couple of weeks ago but am just getting around to posting now.  I wanted to knit Penwiper's Tardis Pattern but didn't want it to turn out as big as the ones I'd seen around.  So, I ended up using embroidery floss and size 000 needles.  It took forever and I had trouble with the seeming because of the tight stitches so it turned out a little lopsided.  Never the less, here's a picture.  )

So, not content to rest on my cluttered laurels with the Captain Jack Coat For A Bear, I've gone and mistaken Hai-Riyo for the red dragon of Wales:

Jenny the Explorer

Jenny was a character that appeared last season in an episode of you-know-what, "The Doctor's Daughter" and was played by actress Georgia Moffett. Although she was just in that one episode, I imagined that miniDoctor would like her as a companion. ^-^

For those who are interested in knitting a Seventh Doctor replica pullover - something we caught in a test fabric run with kadharonon's pattern when using it is that it looks very good and it was an excellent start but it's not quite accurate. Although it took the fabric run for me to notice it! It's not something that jumps out at you :)

Anyway my fellow cosplayers and I have gone and corrected it and here's the screen accurate version of the knit pattern:

Just repeat eight rows for the front and eight for the back (or more if required for a larger than 40-42" chest)

28th-Apr-2009 05:03 pm - New Season 12 Scarf in Jo Sharp
Tom Baker
I promised some pics of my new Four Scarf when I got it- so I have it and here it is!

I commissioned this from a woman in Australia named Kathy I did a trade with several months back. Overall I'm very pleased with this. It's the Season 12 pattern which one can find at www.doctorwhoscarf.com and knitted in the Jo Sharp wool color in DK or sport weight. The Jo Sharp colors he recommended are mostly discontinued now FYI- I had to do a lot of searching on the secondary market and ebay to find everything I needed. I stuck with these because out of Chris's finished scarves I liked the look of these colors best.

My only concern is that now that the colors are more muted like the original, I'm uncertain it compliments the overall costume the same way as my previously used scarf did. The old scarf, while excellent, was a bit bright in some of the colors. However, this could just be me being far too used to the previous scarf - like Eight's shoes I may just need to "break it in".

I guess you be the judge - and I'll go with how my mood suits me when wearing the Four Costume out and about again.

Enjoy,

Hello!

I'm delurking to link to pics of 2 crochet Ten dolls I made using [info]snuffykin's pattern at my LJ. Slightly image heavy, for those of you with slow connections. I hope you enjoy!
19th-Apr-2009 10:36 pm - latest. knitalong post. EVAR.
geekout, happy
hi everyone, long time no post! i did finish my scarf for last year's knitalong, but didn't end up giving it to my friend until well after christmas (some time in january or february, i think). and only now have i finally gotten around to posting pics of him wearing it, because i'm abominably slow with things like that. i made it for him mostly because he expressed interest in commissioning one from me a while ago, and also partly because he's the nineteenth doctor in this fanfilm series i was involved in am currently involved in will probably always be involved in let's be honest.

anyway:

ladies, he's single )

it's a series 12 scarf, but i really changed the colors around. i wanted to work with the red heart acrylic and they had some fabulous colors to inspire me (check out the variegated brown/tan/white in place of brown!)-- and also, i wanted to make it more personalized. i also forewent the tassels and made the width narrower than usual (around 30 stitches, i think? maybe less).
10th-Apr-2009 09:34 am - Finished!
DW: 4: Y HELLO THAR
I wish I had found this community earlier; I just finished my season 16 scarf. It was my first knitting venture, and I made a few mistakes[holes, added stitches, not buying the same brand of yarn for each color...], but I'm still proud of it. And already plotting another attempt, though hopefully less holy and with more accurate colors.

picture )

I do have a question though; I want to do the fat tassels, but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that. I tried scouring the tags for any information, but either I'm too tired and overlooked the proper post[if that's the case, I apologize!] or it hasn't been addressed. Anyone have a youtube link or something that can help? Thanks!

(posted at [info]crafty_tardis and cross-posted here on the advice of [info]wulfae )

So several months ago I said to my writing partner, "the vest that Seven wore? Sure I can knit that." I'm such a twit.

The blessed thing is due in two-an-a-half weeks.

I find that desperation and a deadline are not only a writer's best friend, but a knitter's a well. I am knitting this organically, keeping track of my instructions and using the awesome motif as set down by the more than awesome [info]kadharonon as a guide. It's been modified for the yarn, gauge, and needles. If I need beta knitters, I'm pretty sure I won't need to go far.

I am doing this in Fair Isle using Nashua Handknits Cilantro (70% Cotton/30% Polyester) on #8 24" circs in Wheat, Teal and Geranium. I think (ihopeihopeihope) it'll fit a 42-44R. The colorwork pattern I created (modified) takes twenty-five (25) rounds to complete, and I figure I'll need about six repeats. I'm on round 11, because my learning curve with woven Fair Isle and English knitting took a few rounds, not to mention the six hours of agonizing math.

Math - a knitter's Achilles Heel.

Wish me luck guys. I'm averaging about thee rounds an hour (holy crap I never knew knitting English would be so dang quick) and I think I'll have have this significantly completed in a few weeks.

I'm a Four/Ten girl, and after many years of not watching, my writing partner got me hooked on the Doctor again.

Allons-y!
5th-Apr-2009 10:52 pm - knit tardis hat
Jack - hey kids smile
This weekend I decided to knit something that would be easily finished in a day or two of knitting. (Things like scarves usually get abandoned for months half done. Sigh.) So I tackled the TARDIS hat!

I had seen the hat posted in another comm a few weeks ago, but there was no pattern. So I pretty much created the pattern on my own, basing the body on something else I'd made (with a lot of tweaks). The pattern for the Police Box lettering came from the standard TARDIS plushie chart. Instead of stitching the lettering on after, I just knit the white into the pattern. It's easier for me. (Really, I'm too lazy to finish the entire hat, then go back and stitch the lettering on.)

2nd-Apr-2009 06:16 pm - Rose's Boomtown scarf
dr who jelly babies

I'm not really a fan of Rose, but I did admire her scarf in Boomtown, so I had a go at it. It took me a while to find a yarn with enough variegated colours, even though they’re a bit paler and ice-creamy.

I modified [info]zbyszkoknits's pattern slightly. I'm not sure that Rose’s scarf is ribbed, but I can’t steam-block acrylic/tencel so I wanted some ribbing to flatten it a bit. After knitting a practice swatch, I found that one purl between does make the stitches around the holes stand out more and look more like cable, and it also doesn’t show as much as two purls. So I removed one purl between each hole repeat, and added a stitch to each end, which I then made knits to get the curl Rose’s scarf had. This worked really well. I also slipped and purled the YOs.

Two photos )

BTW Thanks to this group and my friend [info]crycraven for getting me back into knitting. It's great stress relief, and fun too.

31st-Mar-2009 10:53 am - project
del
for my brother.
I have alread made him a loverly 4th doctor scarf (ended up close to 10' before tassles), a Jayne Cobb family hat, and this past Christmas a Marvin the Paranoid Android.

I now have another birthday arriving and try to keep with the whole sci-fi theme.
He does not have a knit Dalek (which is an option) but I was wondering if any of you have any ideas for a BSG item for a 36 y/o male?
I did not watch the show (but now my interest is peeked)

thanks in advance!

*edit
oh, he is not so big on the socks thing...i made him a pair once and i dont think he wears them often...if he could wear sandles all of the time, he would
23rd-Mar-2009 09:27 pm - TARDIS dishcloth
God
I just finished the TARDIS dishcloth. I found the pattern on Ravelry as a free download. It wasn't difficult to make but I think I would wind up doing some changes if I were to make it larger or if I were really anal about my edging. But, for right now, it's a dishcloth. And it's grand :)

Anyway, follow the cut )

17th-Mar-2009 08:58 pm - Pinstripe TenScarf
Geeky!Ten (cheesygirl)
Remember the Pinstripe TenScarf I started around Octoberish? I had to stop posting on here about it because it was being made for [info]lowc's Christmas present . . . and she had finally joined this lovely comm. ^_^

I finally got around to typing up the pattern last week on my way home for Spring Break. I posted said pattern and pictures on my book/knitblog late Sunday night/early yesterday morning; it took me nearly two hours to finish the post—even though I'd already typed up the pattern—I think this is mostly because I'm not that used to working with Flickr. I pretty much only use it for Ravelry stuffs—and that’s just about dragging things from the bottom of the page to the happy photo box.

Here are some pictures! Yay for pinstripes! )

The pattern and more pictures can be found here.

Also . . . I've already had one message on Ravelry asking me to actually contribute the pattern to Ravelry’s pattern bank! ::FLAILS:: As such, I'd love any suggestions, etc. for rewording and/or making the pattern more clear before I add it to Ravelry. ::flails a bit more::

10th-Mar-2009 03:51 pm - finished!
hitchhiker tardis
Finally finished knitting my jewel-toned chenille version of the season 12 scarf, a mere two months after the end of the knit-a-long, and just in time for a snowy vacation! Finished knitting the night before I left, wove in the ends on the plane. I might add the fringe later, but at 12 1/2 feet long now it's pretty well perfect to wrap once around my neck, then hang to mid calf without tripping on it. Loom-knitting chenille using the worsted weight pattern seems to have translated fairly well.

.Pictures below the cut )

I love the colors, the chenille is so lovely and pettable, and the warmth it provided may very well have saved my life.

And by that, of course I mean I have a million other, more important things to do than to sit around knitting. Which is always more fun than those millions of things. Even when I have to try to untangle a knot for like... An hour. ARGH. Is there any secret to working with those big balls of yarn from walmart? Why is mine so tangly?

Anyway, here's the final swatch I did with the lighter yarn I picked up at walmart. )

First try. )
