Chambers of Love: Valentine's Day Edition

Hey everyone. Long time no see. Let me start off this new LJ feature with an apology, folks. The Exalted and Scion side of IPD&D has weathered its share of problems these past few months, and you, the fans, have dealt with a series of delays in the lines that has culminated in a significant delay to Dreams of the First Age, Exalted’s first boxed set. And rather than being there to keep you up to date on what was happening with your favorite game lines, I was nowhere to be found. Between the overwork that came in trying to wrestle the Exalted line back on track and my own trepidation about exposing myself to the vitriolic fury of the message boards, I made the mistake of removing myself, the Exalted fans’ greatest resource, from the community just when you folks most wanted to know what was happening. As anyone who’s met me at a con knows, I love talking to fans face to face, but the Luddite in me distrusts this new decades-old emerging technology men call the Interweb. Basically, instead of just getting over it and being there for you, I choked. Mea culpa. It won’t happen again.

The reasons for the delays on Dreams of the First Age were numerous and frustrating to the point of Brian and myself wandering the WW offices screaming obscenities at everyone we encountered (which isn’t that unusual, except this time the screaming had a central theme running through it). Delays dogged the project from the get go. Most of them, we handled like we always do and kept the book on track, barely. However, the sheer volume of issues with which we’d dealt meant that, by the time the book hit editing, there was no margin for error. And of course, that’s when things went South. Despite what my own recent behavior might have you believe, we at White Wolf listen to the complaints you have and do our best to address them through our actions. There’d been a number of complaints about the editing on White Wolf’s books, so we used this project to try out a new editor. It didn’t go well. AT ALL! So the book had to be re-edited by Exalted’s own Carl Bowen. That need for a re-edit led to the first and most significant setback to the project, the one for which we announced the initial delay. Unfortunately, that first major delay was only the beginning. Every step of printing the boxed set has been dogged by printer problems and misunderstandings. In my 9+ years at White Wolf, I’ve never experienced anything that comes close to the cascading domino clusterf*** this became. When this whole project was announced, I just thought it would be cool to do a boxed set like the ones that were the standard back when I first got into gaming. To follow the theme of the day, this project was meant to be a love letter from myself to the hobby that’s meant so much to my life and allowed me to make my livelihood working alongside the best bunch of guys one could ever hope to meet. It never occurred to me to wonder why no one made these anymore. I just wanted to have an Exalted boxed set, with a big foldout map and multiple books and some dice like I remember picking up as a kid. Turns out, these sets don’t get made much anymore because they are really hard to produce and tend to create the same maddening problems with which we had to deal.

So, that’s the straight skinny on the boxed set delays. As of now, Dreams of the First Age is quite literally on a slow boat from China, headed to the US of A. As for the rest of the Exalted schedule, Brian and I have been doing all we can to keep things on track while dealing with Dreams of the First Age’s many problems, and I think we’ve got everything on track. Scroll of Kings should be in stores now, The Compass of Celestial Directions, Vol. III—Yu-Shan and The Manual of Exalted Power—The Abyssals are currently at the printers, The Compass of Celestial Directions, Vol. IV—The Underworld is in editing and due to go into layout next week, The Books of Sorcery, Vol. V—The Roll of Glorious Divinity II is in development and being art directed currently, first drafts are in for The Compass of Terrestrial Directions, Vol. III—The East, and writing is under way for Graceful Wicked Masques—The Fair Folk. Consider the release of the long-promised Charm cards (http://download.white-wolf.com/download/download.php?file_id=919) that had fallen by the wayside during the craziness of the last six months the most recent step to make sure all White Wolf’s promises are fulfilled, a set of Valentine’s Day cards sent to you guys to let you know we still care about you. Also, I haven’t forgotten you Scion fans. Scion: Ragnarök is in development now, and the first chunks of The Scion Companion are coming in.

Oh, and for those who’ve voiced concerns about the artistic side of Exalted, have no fear. Brian Glass has been scouring the globe for new artists to bring into his stable. His success can be seen on the cover for The Manual of Exalted Power—The Abyssals.

Not enough, eh? Well how about the cover art for Graceful Wicked Masques?

    Pretty badass, huh?

Well, that’s it for this first of my ongoing series of LJ posts. I’ll be back in a week to explain the plan we’ve developed to deal with Exalted errata and to discuss Exalted playtesting. Happy Valentine’s Day, guys.

    Holy. Shit.

That Fair Folk cover is so fucking awesome, and the Abyssal one ain't to shabby either now that I can see it up close.

    But damn.

    Damn.

That cover will elicit EPIC! hard-ons for Fair Folk everywhere.

Also, many thanks for tackling the editing issues and planning errata, I know a lot of charms have mostly issues with Keywords and or lack of them. I don't really mind the delay so long as the product comes out with as few flaws as can be possible.

Thank you so much for the update. It's great to know what's going on in the land of Exalted. :)

The update is greatly appreciated, and I'm very much looking forward to the fair folk book. Thanks a lot for everything!

The question I have though, is 'Graceful Wicked Masques' going to be the 'Fair Folk' book like in 1E, or is it closer to Roll of Divinity or something else?
    payback1130 From: [info]payback1130 Date: February 14th, 2008 07:14 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ooh, I hope its like the Rolls of Divinity--that'd get a lot more use for me.

Also, much thanks for the update.

As one of the people who was bitching in the forums, I have to thank you for this very detailed explanation of everything that went wrong. It does explain a lot. Thanks!

Also, wow. That FF cover has blown my mind.

    I mean, wow.

Both of those covers are astounding. The Abyssal cover is perhaps my favorite cover you have put out for one of the Manual books so far. It has a grittiness to it that seems to capture the feel of the game for me in a way that I haven't experienced before with the Exalted covers. Major kudos to all involved.

Might we know the names of these artists that are producing the incredible covers we've gotten to see?
    johnny_redactor From: [info]johnny_redactor Date: February 14th, 2008 07:35 pm (UTC) (Link)
The Abyssals cover was done by Imaginary Friends own Fiduciose.

Graceful Wicked Masques is by El Pinoy, also of Imaginary Friends Studio. (He'll be doing the cover for the second Exalted boardgame as well.)For more of his stuff, check out http://elpinoy.deviantart.com/gallery/#_featured

The biggest improvement I see to the covers is that the characters dominate the front cover. That they take up most of the space is the biggest thing, instead of just being plunked down in the middle of a faded tableau of portraits.

Also, thanks for the explanation. Just don't let it happen again, or else we might go and play DnD 4e instead. You don't want that to happen, do you?

I had already seen the Abyssals cover in the WW Store, and thought it looked really good. Now that I can see it a bit closer and notice the little details, I can say this is the best Exalted cover I've ever seen. The characters look imposing, mysterious and powerful. They look like the sort of gang you'll regret meeting in a dark alley in one of the overpopulated cities of Creation. They look threatening.
    I love it.

I'm just going to echo what's already been said, so feel free to gloss over it.

Thank you muchly for the update on what's where and why. Delays happen, this I know. I think the thing that was bothering people the most was the lack of communication, which you've now resolved in a very concise and polite manner.

The cover art for the new books is just wow, it's such a welcome change from what we've been seeing lately. Not that the art we've been seeing has been bad, it just hasn't been very Exalted-y. I just can't stop drooling over GWM.

Also, hooray for your new LJ feature! :D

Thank you so much for using Graceful Wicked Masques. Been waiting years for it. Oh, and just try saying 3X2(9YZ)4A and see if it gives you the speed necessary to get the line back on track.
    johnny_redactor From: [info]johnny_redactor Date: February 14th, 2008 07:40 pm (UTC) (Link)
Believe me, I've tried Johnny Quick's speed formula before and it never ends well. Kids, lay off the Speed Force.

Seriously, I've always wanted to get it done as a tattoo.

    Covers.

Glad you guys like the covers. I'm pushing to have a nice print made of the GWM cover. That thing blew me away when I got the final version in. I was visiting the folks over Christmas and I get an email from Huiwen over at Imaginary Friends with this attachment. Man, I was so impressed, I immediately forwarded it on to John and had to call him to tell him to look at it right then. I personally think it's the best cover yet.

I'm also really grooving on that Abyssals cover and can't wait to get my grubby mitts on the printer advance copy when that comes in.

I know things have slipped and I haven't been around posting much on here or on the forums, but things are getting better. John's starting this column and I'll be around to pester him and hopefully start putting up advance artwork to give you all a sneak peek at what's going on, production-wise.

The irony of this post is my conversation with someone to run a Fair Folk game, and questioning if there would be a 2.0 Fair Folk book.

I believe I will point this thread out to him. :)

    Wonderful cover art!!

I sincerely apologize for having lost faith in the Exalted line. After having seen this, and the quarterly I think the Exalted product line is not only back on track, but is INCREADBLY and ASTONISHINGLY qualified hands. I am more excited than ever about what the future of this line has in store!

I think the drawing for Wicked Masques was skillfully done. However, it belongs in the 18+ section of the gaming shop thanks to the lady in blue. Perhaps my mind is in the gutter but I believe that I can make out the areola in the high res pic.

I am not comparing it to the old Clanbook Tzimisce, hopfully nothing like that cover art is ever produced again, but I have been annoyed with the art in WW products since Scion:Hero (which had more then it's fair share of exposed breasts).

Wizards of the Coast put out their "No Chainmail Bikinis" policy with D&D 4.0. I am interested to see how it works out in the execution but I think it is an example that the entire industry could benefit from following.

If the art cannot be changed then I would appreciate a "not workplace appropriate" tag somewhere.

These covers are awesome, and it's fantastic to find out what's been going on with the Exalted line. It's pretty sucky to hear that editors and printers have been giving you so many problems, but I also recall the days of First Edition D&D Boxed Sets in all colors of the rainbow. That was my introduction to RPG's. I'm very much looking forward to the products coming down the line in the months ahead, particularly the boxed set and hardcovers.

I'm also eager to see what plans you have for errata. I know things don't always end up perfect on first (or sometimes even second tries), but it's nice to know that errata is in the works again. :)

Also, who do I ask about the Exalted Wiki? It needs some love and attention too.

You say in your post that "Scroll of Kings should be in stores now." Um... really? O_o The release dates on the website say it's been pushed back to March, I have a preorder in... should I expect it to arrive this weekend??

Crap, that may be a mistake on my end. I know there was an issue concerning how the cover printed, and the books had to be reprinted. I made an assumption about how long that would take and likely was just plain wrong. I'll check with Aaron Voss about this tomorrow and clarify things when I have a definitive answer.
