Knowing she'll be in Nebraska.. she could check out this... (courtesy of Yahoo news)
Rat Olympics Return to Nebraska
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - 2002 is an Olympic year, if you're a rat. Next week, the Rat Olympics return to the Lincoln campus of Nebraska Wesleyan.
The rodents will be competing in all sorts of Olympic events like track, weight lifting and long jump. Trainers and their rats will be vying for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Psychology Professor Spencer Morrison says training rats is a great way for students to study animal behavior. Morrison adds the spectators will be amazed by the rats' ability and agility.
Competition for the big cheese begins a week from Thursday.
Wheeeee!

Apologies to all, but Eliza left a message for me at Turtle Arts to call her today and then refrained from leaving, you know, her phone number! :)
If anyone could kindly e-mail it to me or tell me if it's the same number she had while she was in town, I would really appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm cleaning my apartment today. BLEH!
[I really need an artgirl icon, I swear!]

| She was Here! |
[21 Nov 2002|06:57pm] |
Met Eliza this afternoon at a local bookstore. I was lucky to meet her at all since I headed to the wrong shopping mall where there used to be a branch of this local bookstore. I was told that that bookstore had closed 3 years ago. Ooops so after a few more questions, I figured E. meant Montgomery Village (a MUCH nicer shopping center) and I raced frantically over there, thinking the whole "Don't leave, please don't leave." And when I finally got there, she was still there!! Yay!!!
E. is just as warm, friendly, and charming as she is on her LJ in person. She is the kind of person who I can talk for hours with and *guilty grin* we did. We talked about first her knee and her trip, then on to art, then to the awesome spots Ruth took in SF and then back to art and then business stuff. Frankly, she just rocks. I could go on and on about how much she rocks, but y'all know that. We did go to Stampa Rosa, which was fun, but not nearly as cool as what SCRAPS sounded like!! I tried to convince her to stay with me but she has to return the rental truck in days (yikes!). Finally she got on the road about 4:30 or 5pm (*guilty grin*). She has books on tape to keep her company tho and she'll get to see the coast bathed in moonlight.
I hope this makes sense as I'm getting sleepy :)

Sondheim: Into the Woods |

It's been a delightful 25 hours with Elizabeth -- we hardly stopped talking and bouncing back and forth ideas long enough to tip over and snore for a while. We walked a little around the neighborhood, I took her to Lucca Italian Ravioli Company and pointed out the Ferlenghetti poem above the door while we got Tiramisu, nut bread and things, after lunch/brunch at Boogaloo's (nearly an SF answer to Santa Cruz's Saturn Cafe, only the waitrons are more cheerful) ... showed her one of the in-the-middle-of-the-block mercados, some of the amazing incredible murals in the near neighborhood and then back home -- fortunately this is all within a one-block radius, on the flat except for the block I live on, so we didn't wreck her knee horribly in the process. After more babble and a few phone calls with folks, we drove up to Flax to drool on/at the papers, puttered over past Pearl art supply that actually had the thing she was looking for but only in the too large size (Portland art supply stores await the person who is hoping for the Rembrandt oil pastel crayons), got gaffer tape for making duct-tape books and showed me how to make those this morning (fun!), swung by the California Institute of Integral Studies to show her where Lise works as well as the current installation of art in the hallway next to the library there, and thence back home. I trotted off to yoga class, the last in a series, and arrived home to find at least one of our in-town art pals was free this day, and had arrived to chat and visit; we tossed together salad, ravioli, along with some mushroom tomato sauce we had in the freezer, and had Good Things along with the decadent chocolate cookies and the tiramisu...*sigh*... Got well into a one-off zine capturing some of the day's conversations, and upon Isabella kitty's strong recommendation, finally retired to our beds. (Isabella has claimed the front room, and thus is hostess to guests on the futon-couch/bed. She takes her hospitality duties Quite Seriously and will arrange her guest human-pillows Just So...)
This morning after tea and stuff-cakes* a wee tad of email and me stuffing a load of laundry in, we took off for SCRAP, Scroungers' Center for Re-Usable Art Parts and found paper, cloth, each a tote-bag for a buck, a pile of old Macworld envelopes, and oohed and Ahhed over Various Wonderful Things.
There's all kinds of fennel growing wild along the fence there; I plucked a frond and a head of the seeds, munched and gave her to munch and blessed her with safety on the road, because the only time I had an accident on the road, I walked away and had only to change the tire and replace a 40-cent lightbulb, because fennel caught me...
She's off to see a pal's studio, and then to Santa Rosa, and then drive on as far north as she gets tonight.
The plans and ideas for a consortium among art-zine publishers are burbling up; she'll likely have fabulous concrete plans to propose to us all by the time she's gotten up to north, there.
And with great cheer and song, I send moderngypsy on to you, and the next step along the way!
love, Ruth

| on her way north, an update |
[18 Nov 2002|01:10pm] |
E just called me from Santa Cruz, though unfortunately I'm at work 35 miles away at the moment. So I told her how to get to downtown and where to find free parking, and she's going to be fine puttering around until I get home. So she has a safe haven for tonight, and tomorrow, if she wishes.
She went looking for the Boardwalk, envisioning the Lost Boys, and says it really isn't as interesting without vampires. I'll show her the trestle bridge tonight, when the dark makes it so much more spooky, and vampires are easy to imagine.

| Met Elizabeth tonight... top ten updates |
[17 Nov 2002|11:41pm] |
1. Met in Orange, CA for dinner. 2. Many hugs given on all of yours behalf. 3. Had dinner. 4. Kept Elizabeth smiling by mentioning "think of Margaret Thatcher naked on a cold day" when she was about to be sad... It worked. 5. Made sure she's got things covered for a trip back to Seattle. She's got 5 days to take her rental pickup truck back. More than enough time. Told her to take her time going back, because this is *still* her vacation. 6. It's her right knee that's all messed up. Hopefully it'll be okay driving. At least she's got an automatic. 7. Saw Francois, named her rental truck "Eddie". It just didn't look like a "Bob". 8. Since we were in Orange, literally blocks from Disneyland, she had a plethora of Hotel choices for the night. Recommended she hit the road around 9:30-10:00 am to avoid L.A. traffic. 9. More hugs on your behalf. 10. She left happy.
I think those are the biggies on everyone's mind.... Elizabeth can fill you in on any other details :)

| Message from IQers |
[16 Nov 2002|08:39am] |
Hi all,
This is a message from a member of the IQzine Yahoo! Group who doesn't have an LJ herself, so she's asked me to post here in her stead.
Hi, I have posted everywhere I can on livejournal in the hopes that Elizabeth will see the messages. Please help where and if you can. "one of our Salon Sisters, Vickie, 30 minutes from Riverside, can pick her up, and put her up. Vickie left her number on E's cell phone voicemail." I have Vickie's numbers here and can give them to E if her darn cell ain't working." Everyone wants to help."
If anyone needs contact info for the person who sent me this email, please email me at lulabellafp@hotmail.com, as I'd rather not post her info publicly.

[15 Nov 2002|04:47pm] |
I figure this is the best place to post for someone to see who may or may not get to Elizabeth before she gets any of my voicemails :)
If you do, let her know Sunday when I'm back, I can make it to Riverside.
Oh yeah... I got cash to cover her.

| Here's what I know. |
[15 Nov 2002|01:15pm] |
Elizabeth's in Riverside, CA, but needs to be out of that house (along with her stored stuff) by Sunday. This doesn't sound negotiable.
Last time I spoke with her (this morning at 9:30 am PST), she wasn't sure if she could get back to Seattle via solo U-haul (money and injury being the primary issues), or, if she could get back, where she could stay. The other option was to drive a Ryder/U-haul to Nebraska, then stay with her mother for a time while she re-grouped and recuperated from her knee injury. She would then return to Seattle. Again, money and her knee were the prime obstacles/concerns.
Unfortunately, her cell phone was losing its charge, so nothing was firmed up. I knew that she was going to be speaking with her mother, but have no updates on that.
Any additional information would be grand. Hopefully she'll have her phone charged up soon!

She's in Riverside, California. Truck was rented and she's down here for maybe a few days.
Unfortunately tomorrow night I'm off to San Francisco, so we'll try to hook up on Sunday.

unfortunately I have a little bad news to report. the first night seems to have gone pretty well, considering they're camping in a miserable Oregon coast winter storm. she fell and twisted her knee slightly this morning and aggravated an old injury. she said it didn't hurt very much until she got on the bike and started pedaling, which is further aggravating her knee. I'm sure it's clear that this could be a show stopper. there's nothing like a knee injury, no matter how mild, to put an end to a 1000 mile bike ride. I told her to put the tent back up and rest for the day while icing her knee, and re-evaluate the ride tomorrow morning. she does have enough food for three days and she's not very far out of town so if she can't continue she should at least be able to ride into town and hop on the bus. She's going to put that decision off till tomorrow.
it would certainly be an unfortunate end to the trip, but I'm very proud of her for getting as far as she has. last night was rather harrowing. I wouldn't be surprised if this re-injury has something to do with stress and the fatigue it can cause. she's very well prepared and is handling this slight emergency well.
I wish it wasn't so stormy right now. what a way to start.

[11 Nov 2002|10:45pm] |
She left from Astoria today at about 4:30pm. it was getting dark and I was really worried about her. I caught up to her later after she had gotten over a busy bridge and into a residential area. When I said hello to the two of them I could see that she was going to do very well. :) They should be sleeping in Fort Stevens State Park tonight, right up in the furthest NW corner of Oregon.
I'm so glad Allison is going with her. E really needs a friend at this point in the trip. I have some pictures, but I'm too tired to post any. well... I guess I can post the raw photos easily enough. here they are: http://darling.benjohnson.net/photos/whereisshe/ they're very big and several of them are very blurry and/or dark and/or sideways. enjoy! I'll maybe post some "enhanced" versions later.

[09 Nov 2002|06:59am] |
I've got a few things to do before I go (post office, making some copies, repacking the saddlebags), but we're still on-target for leaving sometime this afternoon/evening.
I'm leaving a bit further down the coast than in the initial plan, still in Washington, but we're losing good weather and I'd rather not be in that much driving rain. The girl who was supposed to go with me seems to have other plans, so, honestly, I'm terrified, and there's about a 50-50 chance that I'll either freeze to death or chicken out the first night. Might as well be honest.
From here on out, there won't be posts from me unless I can find 'net access somewhere. (Libraries, people's houses, cafes..) If you get a postcard from me, please scan it and pop it up on the site here if you can. This is my own record of my trip, as well as a way to know where I'm at for those who are interested.
Thank all of you for your good wishes and kind words and the hefty-duty bracings of support when I needed them. No matter how this comes out, no matter what happens to me or around me in the end, I will always be grateful.
