What's that on the wall? [Jul. 20th, 2008|03:35 am]

[mood | sick]

Hey, Matt?
"Yeah?
You know how you were wanting to go to Deadwood with Sam this weekend?
"...yeah?"
We were thinking you might prefer getting the stomach flu instead.
"Oh. Wait, wha- *Urg*"

One of the things I miss about being with someone, living together, is that when you get sick, and manage to get puke all over your toilet, you know you're gonna have to clean it up, right now, while you're miserable, before it dries. And it's not that I want someone to clean up after me, I welcome the chance to clean up after my loved ones when they get sick. Just caring about each other.

So instead I just cleaned up the mess as best I could between heaves, crawled back into bed, sent a txt about it, and waited to see if I could sleep. It was a restless day/night.

And well, if I can't get the full caring experience, I still get a little. She asked if I needed anything, brought me 7-up, gatoraid, toast, chicken soup, tylenol, everything you'd need. I get my little glimpses in messages and breathy words and whispers and wants.

"Sam says: all the way home I kept thinking about if we lived together I would come home to you, check on you and talk to you or go somewhere else and watch tv lol"

So, I've been up most of the night. Feeling better, except for my stomach, but at least it's not my whole body. Just hoping it clears up enough for me to go to work on Monday, should we get to.

Oh, yeah, I only worked Tuesday this week. Everything was broken down the rest of the time. Yeah, a little sick of it. But I'm patient.

Gonna go sip 7-UP in the bath and listen to music, I think. Candles are nice.

Oh, ow. God, that hurts. I'm about to get fed up with feeling this in my belly.

A bit let down by Home Depot [Jul. 20th, 2008|01:55 am]

earnan
So [info]ariadani and [info]jf4m and I went to Home Depot to take two of their clinics. I have never been to one, but from the ads and the website, they seemed like they would be pretty useful.

The first one was on decorative painting. The "class" ended up being "We have a new painting tape that has a chemical that acts like a foam so paint can't get under the tape...this will make painting designs by taping off cleaner. Here is a board, some tape, and some paint. Have fun." The person "running" the clinic was actually working the paint counter, and they were moderately busy. Kind of a let down.

The second one was on tiling. We got a good tour of the tiling department and a walkthrough of all of the basic materials and some skills. I guess I expected someone to actually be putting tile in mortar to show techniques, but it wasn't bad.

Other that that, I have been feeling pretty ill the past few days. Could be my eye, could be stress, could be the lack of sleep over the last week (see: stress). I hope things get better soon.

Our landlord is coming over in the morning to fix the kitchen sink.

Impressionistic review of Depeche Mode, Violator (my fave album of 1990) [Jul. 20th, 2008|02:47 am]

un_malpaso
We’re back in the UK for another Black Celebration at the hands of these dark-vinyl goth boys. But who can deny the sincerity as they rip out their hearts and present them, spiced and tartare, for your delectation on a platinum serving plate? These descendants of Keats are not from the streets. They dwell in decaying apartments of continental velvets, musty olive drapery, pearl-handled walking sticks. Their emotions are very tender and they wish you to savor them. Do take an hors-d-oeuvre. After all, it’s all just a game, isn’t it? This business of love and living? And, after all, it’s only (opera glasses glimmer in the candlelight) just a breaking heart that we’re consuming together? As we dissect it with our fine cutlery, do take a moment to feel genuine grief for this poor soul whose dreams and hopes came to ruin. We are but the vultures who consume his body, but his spirit must live on. It walks among us, and even takes a drink with us. So let us drink, my love…

Video games and the Real World [Jul. 19th, 2008|11:58 pm]

Announced at Farnborough this year, it appears that Raytheon has adapted some video game concepts and components for a new UAV control system:

*chuckle* I wonder how much of a hole this shoots in parentw' arguements that "Learning to play a video game won't get you a job!"?

[mood | no pants]

The trip to Melbourne wasn't so bad. On the work side of things I had a few conversations about how my teams part of this integrations effort is going to work and did a few on site bug fixes. I only ended up having a 9 hour day, which is on the short end for a business trip. On Thursday evening I went to an ocean front restaurant called Captain Katannas and had some wonderful fresh Mahimahi. After getting back to the hotel there was still some daylight left so I headed out onto the beach.

On the beach was a sight unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I relaxed on a beach chair looking out onto the water. Behind me was a mostly clear sky with the sunset happening. In front of me were dark clouds extending across the water as far as I could see. I could see lightning bolt striking out in the open ocean. Despite this though the weather was quite calm where I was. I just relaxed there watching the lightning and occasionally look back at the sunset. It was very relaxing.

On Friday I left early enough from work that I made it to Orlando with 4 hours before my flight took off. I decided to head to the Florida mall again, since it's the closest mall to the airport. I had a meal there and then wandered the mall for a bit. I found a Game Stop fairly quickly, but decided to check some other stores before buying anything there. It was a really big mall and for some reason I didn't see any maps of the place posted so I had a hard time knowing where I was going. I never did find that Game Stop again, but I did find another Game Stop where I did end up buying some stuff.

My flight out of Orlando was delayed a little over an hour, but that was ok, because I was scheduled for a two hour layover anyway. I get to Denver and I find out that the Albuquerque flight has been canceled for mechanical reasons. I ended up having to stay the night in a Denver hotel (paid for by United) and took an early morning flight out on furry Frontier airlines.

[music |The Aquarium Rescue Unit -- How Tight's Your Drawers?]

Today I went out for a while. It was hot as all get out. I made a few stops. The first stop was at a place to look at new glasses. I have had these forever and the prescription needs to be updated. Then I stopped at Guitar Center. With the closing of my old job there is no longer a better place to buy anything in town. That sucks. I need to restring and adjust both of my basses. While I was in there a guy that used to work with me walked out of the keyboard department. We spent a few minutes talking, and he told me that he has some easy gigs if I want them. I got his number and told him I would give him a call. My next stop was at a sporting goods store where I picked up a new putter to replace the one I lost in the woods last week. Then I stopped and played a round at a new (to me) course. This one I was not so thrilled with. It was a pretty park, but do you really think its a good idea to hace a frisbee golf course along a walking path? I'm not that good (I really suck, but I don't care), but I can throw 200 feet with a fair degree of control. Now, what happens if someone is walking on the path when I throw? If I can't see them what happens? If I am lucky, nothing. Then I lost my Rogue driver. This course doesn't have score cards, and has signs that are confusing as hell. I couldn't find 3 holes, I ended up driving from two tees in the complete wrong direction. One of the times I threw to the wrong hole, and it looked like a good hole to drive too. In fact, it was, but I was at the wrong tee. The correct one was on the other side of a bridge.

Then I got home I had an email from a co-worker who is in Metropolis. She told me she is going to be a captain for the dinner roulette. Looking at my schedule of things going on when I am on vacation I may just stay home and do the things that are already on my agenda. They are working well, and I kind of want to not disrupt that.

The downside of the dinner roulette is that it is on wednesday. That means I will have to skip my disc golf. The upside is that it will involve a situation that is harder for me, and will involve meeting new people.

Sometimes the news is awesome [Jul. 19th, 2008|10:10 pm]

More fallout has occurred due to actions taken against prisoners in Guantanamo Bay. The newly uncovered actions are apparently in violation of U.S. and international laws.

The interrogation method in question was to play music over and over again for days; songs such as Davis Grey's "Babylon," Eminem, and Cilene Dione's "My Heart Will Go On." (I consider the last one torture.)

So lawyers representing ASCAP and BMI are claiming the government owes thousands in royalties for "public performances" of the songs.

Pure win.

I got paid yesterday and stopped by the WalMart after work. I picked up a game I've been waiting on for a while, SimCity Societies. It's a decent game. I wasn't sure if I would like it or not, so I waited until it was at the "cheap" price. ($19.) It's sort of like a SimCity with less complexities. I'll tell you, I never much cared for laying power lines and pipes for water. SMS does away with this entirely, and I enjoy that.

A lot of hardcore SimCity fans (the kind who are still playing SimCity 4, 5 years after it was released) say the toning down of it makes it a bad game. I disagree. I enjoy simulations such as this, but I do not enjoy micromanaging. Laying power lines and pipes counts as micromanaging in my opinion.

I remember I used to enjoy it, back when I was 16-17 and the first SimCity came out. In fact, I remember lying such a redundant set of power lines that it was virtually impossible to kill power to any part of my city without destroying a power plant.

Anyway, the one thing I really quite enjoy about this is how you can select a type of city. Spiritual, Authoritarian, Prosperous, etc. I, of course, named my city "Orwell City" and am making a city much like London in 1984. Why am I doing this? I have no idea, but it's fun. One of my favorite things to do is randomly evict people so they have to pay me to get their house back. Anyone who dislikes this gets sent off to the re-education center. Then they're happy again!

I am a total and complete bastard in this game.

I want to start another city based on the Spiritual aspect of the game. I think that'd be fun as well. That's more my speed. Orwell City is something of an experiment for me. I think I'll call the spiritual one Pala. (Bonus points if you know where that comes from _without_ Googling it or using Wikipedia.) For the record, Orwell City (which isn't very subtle at all) was almost called London 632. (More subtle, not a 1984 reference. Again, bonus points if you know where this came from. It's tangentially related to Pala.) In fact, given my insistence everyone be happy (even though they aren't), London 632 was probably a better name. Then again, the citizens of London in 1984 were also forced to be happy, even if they weren't.

Anyway, overall, I am quite happy with this game.

So you don't have to look it up, here's the London 632 and Pala explanations. Under a cut in case you don't want to know for some reason. )

The woman is watching a commercial about a weight loss seminar

Me: You don't need to go to a seminar to lose weight. If one really cared, they'd get off their fucking ass and just fucking lose the weight.
Her: Doesn't going to a seminar count as getting off their ass?
Me: HA HA HA.

Your result for The hardcore SCA Test...

The Queen's Champion

You scored 61% hardcore SCA!

You are really involved in the SCA. You probably have some really cool garb. You put a lot of work into playing the game and making sure its fun for others too. For a lot of folks an event wouldn't be the same without you. You probably have a tendancy to over do it sometimes. You may need help knowing when to say "No" or when to stop sewing and go to bed.

Arrrggghhhh [Jul. 19th, 2008|05:35 pm]

We live in a 1957 "welcome back from the Korean War, vet" house.

It's a nice house. It's very well built.

It was owned by an idiot and wired by a moron.

This afternoon I decided to replace a pair of SPDT switches in our computer room. The "three-way" arrangement, where you can turn a light off or on  from two locations.

Then I discovered that whoever wired it previously used a SPST switch and jury-rigged the wiring.

Sigh. Rant. Rage.

Now I have to buy (or make, if I'm really unlucky) extensions for a circuit tester so it will reach across a room to find out which set of wires go where.

Which will take me a while and likely result in at least one blown fuse. To say nothing of the damned annoyance of having to purchase a set of extensions I'll (one hopes) only have to use once.

All because in the past some witling couldn't be bothered to wire it to code.

The kicker is that Northwest Hardware is two blocks away -- he could have walked down the street, purchased the correct switch and done the damned job CORRECTLY with a little effort. It probably took him longer to figure out  how to jury-rig it than it would have taken to walk to Northwest and buy the damn switch.

But it saved him a lousy two block walk.

Moron.
