| Driving School in Philadelphia? |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|08:10 pm] |
|
I'm not sure why this is so hard to find, but does anyone know of a good driving school in Philadelphia? It seems that every single one I find that is not out of business has bad reviews or they are review-less mystery places. I've already got most of the basics down and have had a bit of highway driving, all I need to know is Parking (parallel, etc) and then the test. |

| July 11th is the Fattest Day of the Summer |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|01:19 pm] |
Philly is busting out of our pants and onto the streets!
Calling all radical fatties and their allies!! Join us for the fattest day of the summer!!
July 11, 2009, you are invited to participate in 3 radical fat events.
First, a flash mob, or rather a FLESH mob.
The idea is that we'll gather at the Philadelphia Art Museum, and scantily/flashily/fabulously clad self-identified fat folks will run, walk, skip, waddle, ride, saunter, sashay, etc. their way to the top of the famous stairs, Rocky style. Fat folks who don’t do stairs can be waiting at the top for the mob. All of this while allies are cheering, holding signs, and handing out fat liberation literature. This action is going to be filmed for our fat queer documentary. The key word here is FLASH, this is going to be very quick so don’t be late or you’ll miss all of the fun.
All that fat visibility will have made me hungry! On to a barbeque in West Philadelphia for delicious summer fare and exciting company.
Don’t be shy fatties and allies, fuel up for the mega hot fat dance party that night!! Be prepared to show off your sweet moves and hottest queer fashions while raising funds for our fat queer documentary.

[Jul. 3rd, 2009|03:33 am] |
| [ | Current Music |
| | Azam Ali's Endless Reverie | ] | I thought this event might be of some interest to this group. Next week, six or seven batches of home-made ice cream will be crafted... Then, BiUnity of Philadelphia will be selling it scoop by generous scoop at the A-Space on the 11th. BiUnity--an organization for bisexuals--is both informational and social in nature. We hold monthly discussion group meetings at the William Way Center and we have monthly events. We hold a panel discussion at Equality Forum and table at several fests annually, including Pride and Outfest. We rely on two fund-raisers per year--this event and our Death Bi Chocolate event on New Year's Day--to enable us to pay our tabling fees throughout the year. Maybe you will find the time to drop by on the 11th and show support for our organization? Where else can you enjoy good conversation, fun games, and HOME-MADE ice cream for a few bucks?
Who: BiUnity of Philadelphia
What: Home-made Ice Cream Fund-raiser and Games Night (no entry fee)
When: Saturday, July 11th, 7p to whenever
Where: A-Space, 4722 Baltimore Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19143
Why: Meet some cool people, play games, and help BiUnity raise money by buying some home made ice cream!
How: SEPTA's 34 trolley stops at the corner and there is free parking both in an adjacent lot and on the street.
We hope to see you there! |

My ONE-EYED, small adult shorthair grey cat Hobo is missing from 43rd St, between Pine and Spruce.

| Local iPod Repair? |
[Jun. 29th, 2009|10:33 am] |
I am wondering if it's possible to have the headphone jack either repaired or replaced locally. The device in question is a 5th generation 30 gigabyte iPod. A quick search on the internet has informed me that the headphone jack issue is fairly well known. While I don't have the D.I.Y. skills to do this myself, I'm fairly certain that someone among the vast numbers of intelligent people living in this section of the city can provide this skill for a fee smaller than what Apple is asking for. I'm even willing to travel to other sections of the vast metropolis if no one in West Philly can or is willing to be of service.
According to the folks at the Apple store at 23rd and Walnut I would have to take the device to the nearest "official" store for repairs for a flat rate of $120. I also have the optionof buying an entirely new iPod for $250! I'm sorry but I'm not hopping on the R6 to Ardmore and spending $120 or buying into Apple's planned obsolescence for a fee of $250.
Before anyone puts me the in the direction of Craigslist, I have been there and do not trust websites for companies with no actual street address. These websites also ask me to fill in credit card information and put my iPod in a box to be shipped off to who knows where, perhaps never to be seen again.
So, if you can do this repair or you know someone who can, please let me know.
Thanks, Michael |

| AMP Security Scam |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|11:36 am] |
Hello everyone. I'm sorry to make this my first post to this community, but I feel that this is important for folks to know about.
Two people came to my house (I'm on Larchwood) last night at about 8:30pm, threatened me and tried to get into my house. There was a man and a woman, both college age, blond, in blue polo shirts with their logo embroidered on the shirt and shorts. They were preppy and good looking, and immediately, I was suspicious. There was just something too friendly, too fake about them both. The guy did all the talking - he held a clipboard and told me that his company (AMP) was the supplier for my security system and did I know where my phone lines were?
I told him that I was not interested in purchasing a new security system, and that we were quite happy with what we have.
He replied that people often are happy - and at this point, he looked away from me and into my window. . .until something bad happens.
At this point, I felt threatened and annoyed.
He asked if he could see our system, if it was voice activated, if my phone lines were protected. He claimed to know details about my home security (which he obviously didn't know, because his guesses were all wrong) He wanted to come into my house and install a system "for free" and "for the advertising" in our neighborhood. Of course, all this would require that I would let him in my house.
Right. So. I asked him if he had a business card. He said no because his office had "gone green". He provided no ID at all.
I told him that if he walks around my neighborhood at 8:30pm at night with no ID, no business card and asking to get into peoples houses, asking about their security, that people would call the cops on him. At this point, both of them left with some haste.
All and all, very creepy. At the best, these salespeople have terrible business practices - threatening customers! no ID! -and at the worst, they are criminals who are attempting to enter your house. Do not open your house to these people!
Apparently, according to these sites, they really could be either one. http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/447/RipOff0447549.htm http://www.monitronics.com/SecurityScamAlert/tabid/117/Default.aspx http://loudounextra.washingtonpost.com/news/2009/jun/16/sheriffs-office-warns-against-door--door-sales-fra/?local |

I am trying to move OUT of "University City" to somewhere further west. I was considering collective houses, but I don't know. I am kind of skeptical that it's not going to work out for me. Has anyone ever lived in a collective? How was your experience
Also, if anyone has any apartment leads please let me know!

| found kitty |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|08:00 am] |
Passing along the word...
Hi All,
On Monday evening I found a young kitten, seemingly too young to be outside on its own. It has black and beige stripes and a white bib and paws. It was crying loudly. He (she?) seems clean and to know what a litter box is for. He is afraid of cars and loud noises, so he seems to have been cared for by someone indoors and then snuck out somehow. He ate as if he'd been very hungry when I eventually brought him home. I found him on 45th Street between Springfield and Chester Avenues. If he's yours, let me know. If you have access to other forums to spread the word, please do. For now, he's safe and comfortable. If no one claims him, I might keep him or I might be looking for someone to adopt him; I haven't decided yet.
Thanks, Ricky ricomo at mac dot com |

Hi everybody! I have one of those metal-topped 1940s kitchen table for sale. It measures 25 inches x 40 inches, and has two leaves that pull out to double the size of the table. Please respond with your email so we can discuss. I'm near 49th & Baltimore, and the table is already on the first floor of the house.
Thanks! |

It works great, is a Sanyo brand. You must be able to take it down one flight of stairs (so bring a friend). Cash only, please.

| Only $50 for a 1950s metal-topped kitchen table |
[Jun. 22nd, 2009|07:19 pm] |
Hi all,
Currently for sale: 1950s vintage metal-topped kitchen table, white with red accents, wooden base, chrome legs, small drawer.
The table has two leaves that pull out, to double the size of the table. Without the leaves, the table measures approximately 40 inches wide by 24 inches deep. Asking $50 for the table.
You must provide transportation (pick-up truck or van probably required for the table). Or if you are just a couple of blocks from 49th & Walton, you & a friend could probably carry it home. The table is on the first floor of the house, with just a few steps down to the sidewalk. If interested, email me at cappyhead at yahoo dot com. It is important that you include your phone number in your response, so we can discuss arrangements. We're moving soon, so respond quickly if interested!

| More Penn crap |
[Jun. 5th, 2009|01:14 pm] |
Reblogging from a Daily Pennsylvanian blog, for those who might be interested (the PennMOVES web site says the sale will be open to "faculty, staff and students of the University as well as the surrounding community."):You know how it goes: it’s May, your flight home is leaving in an hour, and you just barely finished packing a year’s worth of essentials. You don’t have time to sell back your books, store your futon, or really do anything other than frantically hail a cab and hope the plane doesn’t leave without you. Have you ever wondered what happens to all that stuff you left behind in the Quad/Hill/insert-freshman-dorm-here? Enter: PennMOVES. Now in its second year, PennMOVES is putting on a sale at the Class of 1923 Ice Rink (3130 Walnut) this weekend in which your leftover crap will be sold at obscenely low prices. All proceeds go to the United Way, which we definitely back. According to UA Chair Alec Webley, there are “lots of really nice things, including microwaves, DVD players, printers, TVs, futons, comfy chairs, kitchenware, and textbooks (yes, cheap engineering textbooks in LARGE QUANTITIES)…plus adorable stuffed animals and ten sets of Twister.” Intriguing. The sale is going down from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, but you can get first dibs on the goods by paying $5 for admission to Saturday’s pre-sale that starts at 8 a.m. |

| | hungry | ] | Is there an Indian restaurant that would deliver to 51st and Osage that's good?
I eat fish but no other meats and I'm hungry and have no food in the house and it's raining and I just got paid. I would kind of like some vegetables, but I can always cook up my kale and order something that doesn't contain vegetables. Any suggestions? |
