Calling all musicians!!!

Since there doesn't seem to be one yet (that I can find), I have created this....

ukgothmusicians

It's to help those of us who wear too much black or UV and like to make music, find others who wear too much black or UV and like to make music. Every other forum seems flooded with metalheads and people who still say "Madchester". Seriously, it is not easy finding musicians into our kind of music.

So, if you're a knob-twiddler looking for shouter, or a hitter of things looking for a plucker of stringy things, this is the place for you.

My apologies, but I'm gonna x-post this like hell.

The synthetic dream foundation - "Behind the gates of horn and ivory"

The synthetic dream foundation has a new album, entitled "Behind the gates of horn and ivory" coming out at the end of this month. The sound clips on their site sound phenomenal. Anyone else had a chance to listen to the sample mp3s yet? I think this is going to be the best TSDF album yet.

The latest issue of my magazine, THE MICK 43, is now up for free download featuring, as you’ll see from the cover, Anne Sudworth in a seriously in-depth interview, with photos taken at Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill House, the home of English Gothic, where Anne is having her current exhibition. You really should see this. A bit special!

Other interviews, in alphabetical order, are with Ars Phoenix, following their ravishing electronic/indie explosion. Attrition on the new claustrophobic album detailing the life and crimes of Britain’s most successful (sic) female mass murderess (and the creepy curio in Martin’s possession). By Blood Alone uncover why their genuinely strange rocky hybrid works with Goth, dperd take us through the moving emotional splendour of their second album proper, and we have Hugo Zombie on life after the Naughty Zombies split, and his mighty debut EP. Moldig try to fathom all the interest coming their way for their album which crosses genres with ease, No Tears are justifiably proud of their excellent second album with its mixture of dark melodic energy and devious lyrical intrigue, and The Stompcrash are similarly excited about their debut, Italian Goth-Punk glory at its finest.

Reviews, I’ve done a few, but then again……

Books/Magazines:
48 THRILLS - A Glasgow Punk Tale – book by Stephen McKee
DEATHROCK MAGAZINE Winter08
THE CASTLE OF OTRANTO – Horace Walpole (2CD set, which I struggled through as it fits the theme of the issue)
THE ROXY LONDON WC2 A Punk History - Paul Marko

Music:
DELICA - Poison Of Preference
ARKANE - Enraptured Serene Mesmerism
ATTRITION - All Mine Enemys Whisper (The Story Of Mary Ann Cotton)
BLACKLIST – Solidaire
CELL DIVISION – Chymeia
CHILDREN ON STUN - Bootleg Television Limited Edition dvd
DEAD BEAT PROJECT - Breaking The Shell
DEATH IN DRESDEN - Death And The Game
dperd - Regalerò Il Mio Tempo
FEAR OF DARKNESS - Phobia
KICK TO KILL - Ep Promo
NO TEARS – Obsessions
NOZZLE – Empires
ROSELAND – Maladivine
THE GHASTLY ONES – Unearthed
THE KNUTZ - The Knutz
THE MUMBLES - The Wire
TROUBLE FAIT’ - Aglowing Spark / Sub Lumina Prima

And if you enjoy it please tell everyone you know about it, and encourage them to do the same, because then the artists covered get better known, which is pretty much the whole point. It takes no time at all to download, but ages to read, as my aim is to give you substance as well as visuals.

Download free at: http://www.mickmercer.com/themick.html

Like to shop?

Hey everyone!

My name is Alexandra Olteanu, the PR intern at the Canadian fashion label, Morph Clothing. Since we are conducting extensive in-house research on the best places to shop for edgy clothes, I thought our community is one of the best places to ask about this. Thought you guys would enjoy participating in our project. All you have to do is tell us your favorite places to shop in your city and/or around the world!

Looking forward to hear about your likes.

Alexandra Olteanu

ARE YOU IN A BAND – INFO REQUEST FOR MY NEW BOOK

I am doing a new book on Goth, this time concentrating solely on bands, in the Goth genre itself, and overlapping scenes of Deathrock, Punk Noire, Post-Punk, Ethereal, Heavenly Voices, Faery, Ambient, Dark electronics/folk/country, Neo-classical, Horror Rock, Gothabilly and all the rest. (I am not interested in Neo-folk, club-style electronics/electro, Art-Noise which I see as Indie, or mainstream Industrial which is decorated Rock.)

I am going through all the lists I have assembled to send out info requests but if you see this first and beat me to it then hurrah! Also, for any new bands I may not be aware of you, but once you see this please join in. If you are not in a band but wish to recommend some likely urls please feel free. (Please don’t post any info here but send to the requested locations behind the cut.) Obviously I want this to be a fully International book, which is why I am posting requests worldwide.

Info tucked discreetly away

Although I will be scattering more than a soupcon of personal comments through the book this book isn’t ego-driven but something I want to prove useful as a directory of information, and not merely a gaggle of urls, but the sort of thing collectors will be drawn to, as it is something which adds up to coverage in depth. I also want it as accurate as possible, so if you provide the info I can pretty confident that’s correct!

Please send me the following info either to my myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/mickmercer
Or by e-mail to mercermick at hotmail dot com

I realise some parts may not be relevant for bands in suspension or disbanded but please fill in as many as possible.

I would appreciate the following info

Band formed – date? (Also, any names bands previously went under, or any bizarre names which were considered before you finally settled on your choice.)

Location

Current line-up (please list as below)
Member’s name (previous bands) instrument
Former members (+their previous bands and instrument played)

Releases, as follows
Title – format (dvd / CD album / CD EP / vinyl 7” / cassette / CD-R) – date of release
(*Please include any demos that were available to people, as this is the sort of information collectors require.)

(There is no need to include compilation appearances unless tracks were unavailable elsewhere. Please mention where appropriate, but bear in mind if it’s a huge long list of comps it may get cut out at the editing stage due to space.)

The book will be out in the Summer of this year so if you know there’ll be a release, with title, for late 2008 release please include that.

URL-wise, Please list website url and myspace url but if you have other urls you wish to include, like livejournal urls, myspace groups, or individual websites/zines/club pages you run which you think will be of interest please do so and mention which member is responsible.

Finally, please include one fascinating fact about the band or one of your songs which you know has never been made public before - a genuine fact, obviously.

If you wish to recommend any new bands you think I may not be aware of that would also be much appreciated – simply include an url and I will be all ears.

Cheers!

Mick

THE MICK 41 is now online for free download. 98 pages, full of some of the most intriguing and enjoyable artists around. Interviews with ANDI SEX GANG, CHESTER, MAX EIDER, HERB PROJECT, PRISCILLA HERNÁNDEZ, PLACE4TEARS and THE SLEEP OF REASON, plus varied reviews. Full contents detail and cover pic behind the cut:

CONTENTS:

A riotously good ANDI SEX GANG interview concerning his new album.

UK Punk trio with lashing of humour, CHESTER; two of whom are also mad abut Goth, and their ‘Goth Classic’ is a Goth pastiche/tribute better than Action Pact’s ‘Gothic Party Time’ (which was actually a mocking pisstake, although many people still don’t know that).

MAX EIDER, on his ‘Back In The Bedroom’ album, a man who doesn’t release many albums but when he does they’re crackers. (You may recall him from his work with The Jazz Butcher or David J.)

We have the awesome HERB PROJECT, a French duo who deal in ‘Cathartic Goth’ and you’ll quickly discover they’re not your average couple.

There’s an epic encounter with the supremely talented PRISCILLA HERNÁNDEZ, whose Faery-Ethereal ‘Ancient Shadows’ album is a mesmerising piece of work. It’s rare to find someone was has turned down deals to remain independent, but then she’s a rare talent.

We have PLACE4TEARS, Tyves Oben’s Goth/Shoegaze band, and we also take in Tyves’ magazine ‘Crawling Tunes.’ He’s definitely on the artists’ side. A trouper.

And finally, a look back at a band I only recently discovered, THE SLEEP OF REASON, whose solitary single and a live show appeared on an old Projekt CD, ‘A Logical End’, which was so good I had to ask Oscar Herrera (also in Black Tape For a Blue Girl) to take me through their brief history. (Definitely a band who should have gone on to better things.)

There’s recent records reviews.

ALIO DIE & MARTINA GALVAGNI - ELEUSIAN LULLABY (Projekt)
ANDI SEX GANG - INVENTING NEW DESTRUCTION (Pink Noise)
CHESTER - NO LIGHT HERE (Catmachine Music)
GIANT PAW - MOSQUITO/SILENCE (Feral Electronics/Absynthe Art Collective)
HERB PROJECT – ISARIA (Own Demo)
IGGY POP - ACOUSTICS KO dvd/CD (Jungle/Skydog)
JOHNNY HOLLOW - DIRTY HANDS (Orange)
LOVE SPIRALS DOWNWARDS- IDYLLS (Remastered Reissue) (Projekt)
LOVE SPIRALS DOWNWARDS - ARDOR (Remastered Reissue) (Projekt)
MIRABILIS - SUB ROSA (Projekt)
SUBMARINE FLEET - IN A CASE OF FIRE (Own label)
SUBMARINE FLEET - A VERY STRANGE SIGHT IN THE DISTANCE (Below Sea Level)
THE DIRGE CAROLERS - WALK LIKE MEN – EP (Own Label)
THE MACHINE IN THE GARDEN – XV (Deus Ex Machina)
UNEXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN - 5 Tales From God-Only-Knows (UXG)

Also, somewhat off my usual beaten path, we have LORD OF THE RINGS: The Musical (stage), SWEENEY TODD: The Musical (Film) and the NOSFERATU (dvd – with new Jackson Del Ray score)

Print-wise, I cover DROP DEAD magazine Issue 4, TWF MAGAZINE ISSUE 9 and KALEIDOSCOPE MAGAZINE #24.

A rich International mixture then, and hopefully you will find it amusing as well as informative.

(I’ll be back next week to pick your brains on recommended regional recommendations for my next book. The never-ending search for new talent goes on!)

Download here: http://www.mickmercer.com/themick.html

THE MICK 40 is a beast at 9mb (230 pages) but hopefully makes up for a year in which ill health too often reduced my output, which always prays on my mind like a priest on my head. I know it's not regionally-specific, more International, but I hope people are interested. A couple of hundred reviews, my top 10 Albums of 2007, plus interviews the like of which you simply won’t find in traditional Goth magazines. I have the luxury of space and use it to tease out detail print mags can’t emulate, on top of which I’ve been lucky enough to hit upon the most articulate individuals and the depth is here for all to see – really enjoyable and intriguing, imaginative chats with And Also The Trees, Ataraxia, Cult With No Name, Deadchosvky, Hannah Fury, Niceville, Starcry and Uninvited Guest. Seriously, you’ll love it. Even if you are not into these particular bands, or have yet to encounter them, the way they discuss things will keep you gripped.

Download free from http://www.mickmercer.com/themick.html - just right click as ‘Save Target As’, don’t try and open, that takes ages! Next month I’d like to pop up a request for specific info relating to Goth bands in your area, as I am writing a new book on Goth, concentrating solely on bands, and I want to find as many as possible and particularly anything new.

Calling all musicians...

Radio Golgotha - News & Upcoming Events

It has been an incredible first month. We have had hundreds of unique listeners
tune in from as far away as Finland, Canada, Hong Kong and dozens from our home
base in Tampa, FL. We are particularly happy to welcome out German visitors
which have made up almost 20% of our listenership. Now that we have stablized
some of the technical launch issues, we will continue to add to our library of albums
so that there will new music in rotation everyday including some smaller, but very
interesting regional talent.

We also have new sets from DJ Devious, Maus and DJ Xanthus set to premiere
next week. In the next few months, we'll continue this trend with the programming
shifting towards more Djs, more often. You'll hear club sets from England, Germany
and all over the US.

Thanks for your continuous support!!

-Radio Golgotha Staff
www.radiogolgotha.com

UPCOMING EVENTS

Wednesday 9/5/2007 3:00 PM EST

Set Debut
Senor Dick is back with new set and asks Where is the Youth? It's not what you are thinking...

Sunday 9/9/2007 2:00 PM EST

Set Debut
Artificial is the name of this set by DJ Maus. Avoid the Sunday drivers and tune-in to this Electro-Pop set.
Hope you’ll forgive using livejournal for a bit of blatant advertising.

The company I work for has just acquired AlterEglow. A website that sells OmniGlow glow sticks (and other stuff) at low prices (£8.93 for 10 6” sticks inc. P&P and Vat). We also don’t mind you popping into the office to buy stuff (but best to phone ahead if you do). Why not have a look at the website. http://www.altereglow.co.uk or ring 01258 457 518
We’re open Monday to Friday 9am to 5:30pm.
P.S. Please tell ‘em Drac sent ya. :)
