Dr. Horrible Hand Tutorial
I got a request for info on how I made the hands on my Dr. Horrible, and since I haven't heard anyone else talk about doing it this way, I thought I would do a tutorial. Luckily I thought this might end up happening, so I took pics along the way!

I started by making a long crochet chain, leaving a very long end.

Starting at the beginning of the chain, I folded the chain at Ch 3. Then I used the long tail end to sew up one side of the folded chain and back down the other (i.e., sewing from left to right of finger - or vice versa - up what will be the top side of the finger and down what will be the bottom side of the finger), sewing Ch 1 to Ch 5 and Ch 2 to Ch 4. This completes the thumb. Next fold the chain above Ch 8 and begin sewing the next finger. Sew Ch 8 to Ch 13, Ch 9 to Ch 12, Ch 10 to Ch 11.

Sew up one side and down the other.

Continue in this way for each of the fingers.

Now that your fingers are done, you have to attach them into a hand. To do this you need to use a sc decrease to attach each finger to the other. You need to do this across the top and around to the bottom of the hand, so the hand is an oval cylinder, not a flat single layer. The picture below shows picking up a loop from each of two fingers to do the decrease.

Once you have joined the fingers together using decreases, you need to continue to shape the hand. Look at your own hand and decrease where you need to to make it hand-shaped (sorry - I didn't write down details of this part, and it will differ a bit depending on what you are doing).

And here is the finished Dr. Horrible glove I made using this method.

Please ask questions about parts of this that aren't clear (and I'm sure there are many). I will try to modify it as necessary till it makes sense!

ETA: Now that I think about it, this really is the same as theknittycat's loopy method, just with a chain instead of multiple rows of sc or knitting for fingers! I guess I reinvented her wheel!

I find it funny that as this page was loading, a Doctor Horrible song came up on my playlist, out of over 4000 songs. Also, I will have to go back and look for your Doctor Horrible, since I must have missed it. Woo!

I love those little happy coincidences!

*sings (terribly - or should that be horribly?)* And it's plain to seeeeeeeeeeee, evil inside of me... is on the rise.

What a great tutorial! I've had the pics done for months for a couple of tutes, and can't manage to get them done! You did this so FAST!! And that gauntlet is so adorable! :o)

Thanks. I hope it is actually useable. As I was writing it I was thinking "People are going to have no clue what I am talking about!" I realized that there were pictures that would have helped that I didn't take (how to sew each finger together). I hope it makes sense in the end. If not, I can make another one and take the needed pics.

I just added this to my Dr. Horrible hand tutorial. Thought I would repost it down here so you would see it!

It looks pretty clear to me the way you've shown and described it. I wish I could write tutes so clearly and so fast!

As to re-inventing my wheel (I have a wheel? YAY!) - well, it's all the same looping in and out of strands of yarn, come to think of it - No matter what techniques we're using! But I think this is a cool idea that you've come up with all on your own. Let's say that they're kissin' cousins. ;o) It's very clever!

Don't they call that concurrent... um... something? heh heh Inventors coming up with similar ideas ... besides, I'm positive that others must be using these techniques, we just didn't know about it! ;o)

I have another peep fingers technique to share someday, too (if I can ever get them written up!), and maybe sometime we can set up a techniques page with all of these things! :o) Different methods work for different occasions, and it'd be great to have them all available to us, for when we need them.

Thanks so much for sharing!! :o)

Thanks for posting the tutorial. It's clearly written. Quite clever really, the way you came up with the method.
