the Thing (Marvel Comics character, not the horror movie!)
Well, we've been bandying about with comments about the Thing, so I thought I'd post him, and put him in with the ami-along, 'cause he's in cartoons as well as comics.  ;o)

Here's my version of  "the ever lovin' Blue Eyed Thing"

small Thing

He was a tough project, but our nephew adores him, so what could I  do?!  Now I'm making the Hulk for him.  *sigh*  Why can't the boys like CUTE?!  heh heh

Actually, I shouldn't complain.  My DH LOVES cute!  :o)  Besides, I'm a long time comics fan, and it's fun to try to work out an impression of the characters that I find interesting.

He's constructed like any basic standing ami, but he's larger than most of mine, and all in Orange Seed Stitch!!!  Ugh!  heh heh  He would work very well in crochet, and would probably be a lot faster to make!   :o)

the Thing

Here with my photo references:

the Thing with photos

A pattern for him (not tested) is available here.

OMG That is adorable. My boys would love this so much. I hope you show us pictures of The Hulk when you are done!

Boys like cute. Big huge orange rock guys can be cute. He sure is!

Oh, It never occurred to me that boys think big huge orange rock guys are cute! ha ha ha Actually, I thought the Thing in the Fantastic Four movies was FABULOUS!

I have seen him on your Flikr site before (or maybe Ravelry?). He is just too incredibly awesome! I am in awe of the individual fingers and toes! I have to look at your pattern. You must have either used a pretty fine yarn - this looks like it could be caron simply soft - or else he is huge to be able to do those fingers and toes! He really is incredible (and very cute)!

He's on both, crafty_shanna. I just kept forgetting to post him here! heh heh I used Lion Brand Microspun yarn, which is a sport weight. That's the weight I use most. sometimes a finer yarn than that, but not usually thicker, unless it's textured or furry. :o) No, he's not huge... for me he's big, most of mine are 4"! And I have as small as 1/2 inch! heh heh Though lately I've been making bigger ones. Pippa Potomus was my largest so far at nearly 12". I think the Thing was 8 or 10 inches. Can't remember. And nearly as wide! ;o) I forgot to post any pics of him in my hands for scale. :o/

I'm so pleased you like him! I was quite happy with the fingers and toes, and I made them all in one piece, too. ;o) The idea of making them separately gave me the willies! So I had to figure out a way around that. ;o) The greater challenge was in making Miss Piggy's fingers, recently! Teensy fingers! In opera length gloves, of course! heh heh

Oh, that's cool, devilwmn! I hope you can make out my amateurish pattern writing. I had to create the pattern AFTER he was finished! From what I remembered, and from photos! There were so many people begging for it, I finally had to give in! But it took me weeks to write it. And then a lot longer to post it! heh heh

I'd love to see your version of him! :o)

The eyes are czech fire polished crystals, with tiny white pompoms behind them. I ran beading thread through the beads and then sewed that through the pompoms and then sunk them into the eye area, pulling them in quite a bit. I think the beads are 4mm, but it will say in the pattern. The eyes actually look much better in person! They sparkle and shine, and they're very blue! Of course, those won't do if he's for a small child. But this one was for a teen.

For a small child, bright blue yarn knot eyes would work. I used bright blue perle cotton knotted eyes for Mossalia, and that worked quite well.

Oh, boy! I had a lot of fun perusing all your adorable ami's!! I guess I missed seeing a lot of them, here. Maybe before I joined? Or it could be my leaky memory! ;o) Thanks so much for the link!

Glad you decided to post this! Ben - he really deserves the attention, doesn't he? Besides, the more, the merrier!
And wow, a Hulk - there isn't a thing you couldn't make, so it seems! You are one crafty lass, I say!

Thank you very much, legendancer! You're so sweet! :o) Yes, poor Ben Grimm never gets the attention he deserves... especially with that hotshot, Johnny Storm around! ;o)

Yeah, wait to get excited about the Hulk when I have more than one foot done! heh heh I'm never sure I can do these peeps till I'm well along with them. The Hulk is much less challenging than the Thing, though! Except for the "lovely" colors! :o/ Good thing I got my pink overload with all my ballerina and piggy knitting this spring/summer! ;o)
