On Friday night I went to Chase Field in Phoenix to see the Arizona Diamondbacks take on the San Diego Padres. I was able to sit in the best seats I have ever sat in, behind the D-backs dugout, so I was pretty excited about going.
Max Scherzer was pitching for the D-backs and he started out the game wonderfully. The problem is, since he is a major strikeout pitcher, his pitch counts always get ridiculously high nearly every game. He only lasted 5 innings, having thrown 100+ pitches, and he gave up a few runs. The D-backs pitching staff has been monstrous at the plate this season, and tonight was no different as Scherzer smacked a single back up the middle to get things started in the 3rd inning. (side note: Dan Haren is a doubles machine and is hitting .252!)
Kevin Correia was pitching for the Padres and the Diamondbacks hitters just could not figure him out. I don't think they got past second base for the entire game. The Padres hitters beat up more on the D-backs bullpen once he finally exited the game. The Padres team is full of relatively no-name guys (except for Adrian Gonzalez and David Eckstein), but they're scrappy and keep fighting to get their hits, stolen bases, etc.
In the first inning, one of the Padres hitters smacked a screaming, and I mean
screaming line drive foul ball that hit a lady in the face right behind the D-backs dugout. It was pretty scary to see. The emergency crews were working on her for a good 20-25 minutes before they carried her out of there on a stretcher. D-backs team president Derrick Hall ran over to her and stayed with her the whole time. I never heard what happened to her, but there was a lot of blood. I just hope everything turned out alright.
In the bottom of the 9th inning I was able to move even closer to the field, about 3 rows up, and take some pictures. One of the Chase Field employees saw me taking a bunch of pictures of Mark Reynolds in the on-deck circle, came over to me and was like, "Do you want me to tell him to turn around and smile for you??" And I was like, "Yeah, sure!" He started walking over there and all the time I was wondering --
he's not really going to go over there and talk to him during the GAME, is he? But no, he just went back to standing at his post. Haha. Though I did have my camera ready just in case, ha.
The game wasn't terribly exciting - next to no offense occurred and it was a big-time pitcher's duel for awhile, so unfortunately there wasn't much to tell about this weekly correspondent game! But it was neat to sit so close to the field.
Here are some pictures I took at the game!
( and more D-backs/Padres behind the cut! )
