Welcome to Golden Week, a holiday most Americans really don't understand.  But basically its like this: because three consecutive holidays in the same week occupy the Japanese calendar...and because of it, many Japanese people just take the whole week off or spend the week off from school.  Thus: Golden Week.  And thus, a double issue for the Japanese to celebrate Golden Week.  But hey, its golden for the pirates: One Piece has the cover as another book in honor of their tenth anniversary comes out...and we all know Oda's covers are always amazing!
-Surprise of the Week: For those of us hoping Blue Dragon was going to remain low...well, its in the top five again.  Guess you can't keep a shadow-controlling pervert down.  Not really too much else to report outside ES21 and Reborn taking up the rest of the top five for the moment.
-Dissapointment of the Week: Does seem a lot like business as usual in the basement, with Muhyo, Taizo and P2! fighting at the bottom.  So that means..nothing to report here.
-The Jaguar author has two stories this week: both the latest recorder-playing nonsense as well as a one-shot!  But hey, its probably going to be funny, so I guess they let him have it.
-The issues after Golden Week...well, this came as a shock.  Two new stories about to begin serialization.  But to tell the truth, I don't even know if anyone or anything is really ready to leave the magazine just yet!  Several of the cellar dwellers aren't really ready to end on such short notice (P2, Muhyo, Taizo), none of the series approaching their finales are there yet (Prince of Tennis, Bo-bobo), and neither of the two latest series appear that weak so far (Usagi, Godago).  We have to keep abrest the next couple weeks to find out who goes to be replaced by the newbies.  And the biggest question of all in my head: where is the first-year anniversary for Mx0!?

Goddamn you, I just finished posting >_>

Anyway, P2 and Taizo will probably go.
Taizo has been flirting with rock bottom way too often lately; and Shuichi Aso is a gag-mangaka. So out with one, in with the other.
And I'm also afraid that P2! just couldn't improve enough to stay in.

Sorry about that. If you want me to remove this...meh, this reminds me of the Gash board: its always a fight to the finish to whoever gets it on LJ first.

Yeah, P2 and Taizo are probably the best bets for elimination. P2 just couldn't hold an audience...and Taizo is gag-based, meaning it could end without anything really falling apart.

Had the same problem on the Gash board a week or so back: I saw the latest chapter come up, so I wrote as quickly as possible and still was the second post on the board for the chapter...leading me to delete mine. Personally we need some sort of structure in putting these lists up instead of this "race to who gets posted first".

Well, far as Gash summaries go... I usually have them up by 9:30 AM on Tuesday at the latest because of school. So if it's not up by then, it's a pretty safe bet that I won't be able to for a while.

Ah OK. Usually I don't even get on the web until about 9 in the morning, so that's why its always up before then. Sorry, Chao.

No problem, if you still wanna try to get them up before then feel free. That's just my general schedule for it if you wanted to avoid future mixups like that.

Alright, update: I looked over S-Manga today to see where P2 and Taizo stand for ending early with their latest chapters...and to tell the truth, if either go within the next couple weeks, it would be an "aborted ending" along the lines of Shaman King or Zombie Powder. Unless Shueisha decides to inflate the book with two more stories (which I doubt will happen) or just end Samurai Usagi and Godago (just as both are still finding themselves and aren't M&Y-level disasters), there will be a lot of people upset when the final decision is made.

Well, it's not the first time series ended abruptly in Jump. So that's not really something to go by.

I know but its probably the first time since I actively started following these rankings that there may actually be a series without a real ending.

Was Hitomi no Catoplebas the one shot with the guy who could freeze stuff in time? Because I loved that one. If it's getting a series that'll be awesome.

nice to see reborn bounce back after being pretty low last week. Blergh blue dragon up again though D: OP anniversary celebrations should be good, Oda usually delivers on his coloured work.

New series starting serialization is interesting, will look forward to checking them out

I don't want P2 or Taizo to end. I kinda wish they'd just get rid of Volleyball and Usagi, because I care nothing for them. Anyone know what the new series are about?

Ahh Gintama is pretty high and so is D.Gray this week....very interesting. Though as i've stated before i LIKE usagi...so it would sadden me to see it go. But i've learned not to get attached to anything in jump so it wouldn't be too devistating.

The current ranking of Usagi may actually save it. It hasn't been anywhere near the bottom since it started...but at the same time, it could still go because "its the new kid".

I've been wondering with regards to series finishing, what happens if a series thats really popular wants to finish? is it aloud to just choose when it ends? or does every series have to wait until it gets the back of the book?
(kaching Reborn back up the top!)

Of course they get to choose. Otherwise some series would never end.

The best case scenario would be that the mangaka can create the story and end it when they reach their conclusion. Unforutnately, Shonen Jump is also a business, meaning that the loss of a popular manga may lead to a loss of profits by them. Thus they end up coaxing certain series to keep going even after the writer reaches what they see as their climax and conclusion.

The best example of a series extended due to the pressures of the publisher and the fanbase is Dragon Ball. Toriyama's story was rather simple in his mind: have Goku work his way to becoming the most powerful being in the galaxy, reach the status none have had for centuries (Super Saiyan) and defeat the ultimate evil that destroyed his people. (Frieza) But because of the massive popularity of DB and the pressures from Jump editors, he kept it going with the Cell saga, which many say is as good as Frieza yet keeps ratchiting up the powers and such. Then when he approached that climax (with Gohan "surpassing" his father), the editors and fans made him keep going again, this time into the Buu arc. Yet even as he reached that climax (Gohan defeats Buu, the world's safety officially goes to the new generation), the fan response forced him one more time to extend it so Goku would defeat the final evil. (then there's GT, but that's Toei's doing, not Shueisha's)

Outside Toriyama, the only other example I can think of off hand where this happened is Togashi and YYH (the Demon World tournament I hear is all their doing to keep it going after Sensui). But basically while the publisher and fans really can't stop a writer from ending a series, they try their hardest to keep it going for their sakes. Its not that often I see a series still in its prime ended on the writer's terms.

I think right now what they're doing, in stead of just adding arcs; is stretching out the main premise as much as possible.

I guess it depends on the mangaka. Personally I think that Kishimoto is probably the biggest culprit of this: see how little has happened in certain chapters of Naruto recently. (particularly this "Sasuke goes around and gets a team" arc) It does seem like he wants to end this series already, but due to popularity and editing demands has to stretch it out as long as possible. The sad reality is that no one knows if the next series he creates will be a hit: it isn't too often that a creator has two straight hits and usually the next series after a huge one bombs. Thus, he is forced to milk Naruto out.

I think Naruto chapters have been 17 pages for a very long time now, opposed to the standard 19. Another sign of stretching.
As for another little hit called Bleach; that mangaka just has a knack for not getting to the point. Which works out perfectly.

Works out in which way? Most of Kubo's chapters are immense battle storyboards anyway :p But I sort of get you there: instead of just finishing this arc and prepping for one big "blow up the moon" finale for the Winter War...he's still in Hueco Mundo doing stuff. In the words of Monty Python: GET ON WITH IT!

As for the page count for Naruto, I really wasn't taking that into consideration. Moreso it is how he just does page after page...of nothing, with maybe one important fact coming out at the very end. If another mangaka, even in WSJ, was doing this sort of series, they would get to the point while doing really cool things.

The sad thing is I can't drop Naruto...mostly because if I do, I won't know what the idiots at NF are talking about all week. :p

It works out in the way that Jump doesn't have to force him to drag things out.

And I was just noting the page count thing on TOP of what you said earlier.

Naruto is an eternal guilty pleasure of mine; or maybe it's not even that, but I got into manga because of it and I don't think it has ever gotten bad enough for me to completely drop it. Somewhere deep inside of me still sleeps an enthusiastic fanboy.

Naruto is alright, but I never really got the hype. Personally I always thought it was one series to start both when it got animated and dubbed because...well, there was too much hype around it and because I knew in my head that it had to get on TV eventually. There are some interesting characters and such, but a lot of it is just overblown and a lot of potential wasted. (the good news is that Kishimoto isn't the current king of wasted potential...ascend to your throne, Kubo) A lot of shonen are like that but this one does seem to show it off more often than not.

I think they're both fine and enjoyable. But their status leads one to believe they're the best thing since sliced bread. Which they're not.
Even One Piece has its faults though. They all do...

Hey, OP does have its problems occasionally, but they are few and far between. The world Oda creates is just so much more dynamic and interesting that you forget its a shonen.

Don't get me wrong, I love it to death and it's a whole lot better than a shounen should be. But I'm just saying it's not perfect; the fight-scenes are usually pretty boring, tbh. And his backgrounds can look messy.

Again, this is nitpicking at its most extreme. The parts Oda DOES do well, he does sooooo much better than anyone in the genre.
