7:41 pm - Revisit to an old concept

flipthepage

Okay, look at some of the oldest posts on this community. on a very early one we had a list of links, to the best livejournal communities for each currently running WSJ series.

So this got me thinking, why not revisit that, especially now we're in Jump SQ land aswell.

That gives us a lot of series to cover, but it'd be handy for those among us who wish to delve more into the series they love. i mean barbas plugged the best sket community about recently, and the same happened for Usagi, so a mass version would be good. Sadly i have no level of judgement for this, so i thought to myself that i should put it to all of us here at the Weekly Jump reader's journal to point out the comms that seem best for each respective series out there, and to list them all for visitors to see.

So whaddya think?

5:05 pm - Kanzenban Editions?

perrolococz
Since 2003 (or before too lazy to check XP) the Perfect Editions (Kanzenban) have been appearing one after another, these perfect edition are well... Ehem, "perfect" you might say.

First of all they have new cover illustrations -in most cases- even lazy Togashi had time to draw new illustrations, the only lazy mangaka was Masami Kurumada which DID NOT draw any new illustration, sigh, every re-edition of Saint Seiya has used the same illustrations, isn´t it about f0ck1ng time you draw some new illustrations lazy mangaka?!

Ok, but that´s not all, no, the best part of the kanzenban is that it includes the colored pages which were colored in the weekly serialization, even  the 2-color pages!

Ok, now I will stop the free advertising and ponder the question, what Kanzenban edition you want to be released?

For me I´d personally like to see some good classics (Since classics are the ones with most colored pages and also the ones that are harder to find) like Captain Tsubasa, Video Girl Ai and WingMan (I haven´t read it, is just that is by Katsura, and I love his colored pages :D).

10:00 pm - New series confirmed

sexyrandal105
Poseidon ends in the next issue. The others are probably soon to end soon as well.

#25 (19/05)
Shimabukuro Mitsutoshi / Toriko (New Serie)
To Love (Pc)

#27 (02/06)
Hamada Kôsuke / Basket Mono (New Serie)

Toriko interests me, because it's by the Takeshi mangaka. I couldn't care less about the new Basketball series though. I am just going to assume it will fail just like Volleyball did.

7:41 pm - More Jump News: Akamaru, the ending series

strangerataru
Got some interesting news on two fronts today...one about who's going to be in the latest Akamaru Jump and another on who is possibly leaving the magazine in the near future:

-Akamaru Jump for Golden Week will be coming out May 7th with several new one shots by Yoshiyuki Nishi (Muhyo & Roji's Bureau of Supernatural Investigation), Yūki Nakajima (Kirihoshi) & Yūichi Itakura (HAND's), as well as a bunch of promising one-shots by several new comers.  As well, we're getting a ton of stuff from several current Jump series (Psyren, Reborn, To-LOVE, Mx0, Usagi, Poseidon, Double Arts, Bari Haken, Nurarihyon, Yushagaku) as well as some special giveaway posters from different sources (Hatsukoi, Gintama anime, PoT musical, a special female pin-up designed by Yusuke Murata)

Source: http://jump.shueisha.co.jp/akamaru/08spring/

-Now for the bad news: according to 2ch, three series are possibly going to be ending soon with the next cuts.  The announced victims are:
-Hatsukoi Limited
-Poseidon

And....this one is going to hurt for a few people....

-Mx0 (dang, can't Kano get any breaks!?)

At least Usagi is safe...for the moment.

11:09 am - Jump 40: The Countdown is On!

strangerataru
Well with all the huge things going on recently with the combo 50th anniversary for Shonen Magazine and Shonen Sunday, I was afraid Shonen Jump was going to be outdone.  However...I think Shueisha has big plans going on regarding this.  An update for all that's happening:

-This year's One Piece special attraction (the one with the island backdrop and that usually has stuff like a life-sized Going Merry/Thousand Sunny) has become "Jump Island" in celebration of all things WSJ! (though the pic so far just has something similar to the spread from a couple years ago with the heros in swimsuits...OK, just Luffy, Naruto and Ichigo are there so far)
-As previously reported, there will be a Jump Super Anime Tour with a One Piece/Dragon Ball crossover...and it seems like another involving Bleach and Gintama!
-Slight adjustment but mostly because the page has been fixed: apparantly there will be three special one-shots in celebration of the Jump 40th, one of which will be KochiKame in the big issue while the other two are Kinnikuman (in June) and Captain Tsubasa (in the issue after the anniversary)
-We already know this but Oda's pretty much doing the binds for the whole year, depicting the "four seasons" in the OP universe. (then again we're currently in the midst of summer in the second bind)
-The big WSJ: Issue#34 (release July 19th...which probably means we'll get leaks a few days earlier) will be the big 40th anniversary issue. (sort of hope the regulars aren't preempted for the week..but this is sort of the big event so who knows)

2:16 pm - To Love-ru = Love Trouble?

flipthepage
Now for another of my increasingly pointless posts.

Tokyopop germany have once again taken licensing initiative, and got it's hands on To Love-ru, but as with Blue Dragon Ral (omega) Grad the main purpose of this information is we have an idea of what the localised name could be outside of Japan.

As Germany have named it Love Trouble, a wonderful name that avoids the issue of the mildly confusing pun, and you could argue is a fitting way of putting it, as most trouble the character's encounter can be love related :D

So what does everyone think of this name development?

7:43 am - News on issues 22-23 and 24

flipthepage
Well with Naruto getting the cover (probably with an assortment of others) and Mago getting another colour it's been beginning to seem that jump is focusing very little on the smaller series. and the next issue completely backs that up:

Bleach (couv & Pc)
Double Arts (Pc)
Bari Haken (Pc)
Absent: One Piece

Once again no cover for other series! joy of joys. and it seems possible that we have a second bout of courtesy colours for the three newcomers, as opposed ot popularity based.

but then again, this could mean that ALL THREE are hits. which would rock bells.

So what does everyone else think of Jump's current use of it's series?

current mood: cranky
current music: god knows what

3:59 pm - Japan's Jump Anime Tour to Show New Dragon Ball Anime

sexyrandal105
This year's 21st issue (released on April 21) of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has announced that a "Jump Super Anime Tour" will visit 10 Japanese cities this fall with new anime specials for Dragon Ball and One Piece. The tour is the eighth project that celebrates the 40th anniversary of the magazine. The magazine also hints that at least one other title will also be animated.

4:13 pm - Brace yourselves.

barbapopo
Latest rumours fresh from Heiji-sama of the Ritual Scan forums:
Next to end are: Hatsukoi Limited, Samurai Usagi and possibly Poseidon.
But the biggest shocker: Hunter x Hunter could very well be ending in 10 more chapters.

3 new series are expected to start as well.
Man, I don't know what to think of HxH ending, though. With Togashi's tempo of late, he'd have to speed things up considerably now to wrap things up. (but hey, who knows, maybe he'll do a HxH part 2, maybe even in another mag)

12:03 pm - Samurai Usagi Com

gokudera_zoro
mmm... Mind if I post this here?

I started up the Samurai Usagi com a while ago, and I wasn't going to make it until I could start scanlating it from the beginning of the series, but apparently my search to find someone with tankoubon scans of volume 1 of usagi wasn't a success.

Anyway, i guess it can still be a nice community even without the series scanlated, though i am still ready to scanlate the series whenever scans come out, so if any of you have them, or can scan them, it would be very much appreciated.

If you're interested in joining the new community, please do:

http://community.livejournal.com/samuraiusagi/

I'm sorry to say that my limited knowledge of LJ and themes make up the lack of style to the Com, so if any of you have any suggestions, just post them, there really aren't any rules to it yet, except for the obvious.

Anyway, hope it was alright to advertise the LJ on here. hehe...

10:13 am - Stan Lee and Takei Unveil Ultimo

sexyrandal105
The official Japanese website of Shueisha's Jump Square magazine has revealed the first finalized image from Karakuridōji Ultimo, the new series from Spider-Man and X-Men co-creator Stan Lee and Shaman King creator Hiroyuki Takei. (In the linked page, select the two center characters.) The series will be previewed in the premiere issue of the Jump SQ.II spinoff, which will ship on April 18.

Viz Media has also announced that it will hold a press event at New York Comic Con on the project on that same day. Lee, Jump Square Editor Takanori Asada, and Viz's Shonen Jump Editor-in-Chief Marc Weidenbaum will appear at the event to discuss the work. Viz has also indicated that more news will be announced. The story of Ultimo revolves around two figures — Vice and Ultimo — who appear in the skies above Farmless City. Their super-powered clashes bring destruction upon the city and raises the questions of their origins and aims.

The press release quotes Lee as saying, “I am deeply honored for this great opportunity to collaborate with an award-winning artist/writer of the stature of Hiroyuki Takei. I enthusiastically expect that the combination of an American story-telling style merged with Takei-san's acclaimed Japanese style will result in our joint creation Ultimo presenting an original, exciting type of manga that will appeal to comic book fans around the world.”

I really like the character designs. I am definitely interested in this new series.

8:20 pm - Passing of the torch

hitman_l
So, it seems a few series of Shonen Jump are ending in the near future.
First, the series with an end in sight:
Eyeshield 21: come on, it has to end after the Christmas Bowl. Very likely done by November.
Neuro: Confirmed to end after the Sicks arc, probably early next year.
GinTama: Confirmed to end with 30 volumes, so 7 to go...
Bleach: Final Battle soon, after flashbacks. Next year?
Naruto: Kind of a stretch, but considering recent events... End of 2009 at the earliest.
Also, some may get cancelled like Hatsukoi or Usagi (Hopefully not Usagi)
We may not have to deal with this for a year, at least.
Which series, besides One Piece, will become a big hit to keep Jump strong?

Death Note 2 (Couv & Pc) - New series!
Sket (Pc)

After many many many years and 150+ volumes, it looks like the unthinkable has happened. Kochikame has actually finally ended. It seems very sudden as Jump did not even advertise this at all. Oh well, it had more of a fun than most mangas could ever dream of. It will be missed. On top of that, Reborn takes the cover this week. Maybe it's due to the anime recently starting the future arc. And what's this? Usagi, Sket, Mx0, Psyren all in the top five? How has the balance of power shifted this much in Jump? disappointments of the week: How is this possible? Bleach and Naruto both collapsing? Maybe the editor is finally losing his mind. Also a really bad week for One Piece. Next week it looks like Obata and Ohba seem to be bringing back Death Note. What could become of this sequel? Could it actually be any good? Hopefully.

4:26 pm - The 2nd Tier - Success, Failure, and Jump's Revolving Door since '04

strangerataru
Weekly Shonen Jump: for forty years, this magazine has represented some of the most well known, well regarded and obviously commercial, childish and just plain fun manga to come out of Japan.  Every year, many new series begin in Jump...but usually, most of them have a really hard time sticking around.  In particular, from the period starting in about mid-late 2004, we've seen many, many manga potentials begin with amazing hopes for survival...and yet, look where we are now: only one series from 2005 is still in the magazine, two from 2006, and 2007 may also be looking like a year where one-and-done manga could dominate.  (considering Usagi, Hatsukoi and Yushagaku never seem to leave the bottom and even semi-potential hit Sket Dance shows occasional weakness)  Even more embarrasing: two of those series (Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro and To-LOVE which is starting this week) have actually gotten anime...yet never get the amazing hype that many of the bigger, longer and more prominent Jump series have had for said anime (see how they get a color page but no cover).

It does beg the question: what the heck is going on in Jump?  Why would a magazine have such a hard time keeping any new hits?  OK, maybe many of them aren't that good but at the same time I guess one of the main things we may have to understand are several factors:
-There are periods of congestion and periods of amazing development in Jump
-There are years when there is the luck of many older series going away leading to many newer series having the chance to blossom into the next huge hits
-Jump fans are just as picky as ever and most just want comfort compared to something new or innovative or interesting.

This is mostly going to be talking about recent Jump events...particularly within the last five years or so (starting about '02), but a lot of it could be mentioned about many other periods in Jump history too.
