Tips?

Hi ladies.
I took a wedding planning course with the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada this past July, and have earned my certification in Wedding Co-ordination. Since then, I've been searching for ways that I can get into the industry (aside from branching out on my own and doing them independently.) Ideally, I'd like to work alongside a person/people who have been working weddings for a while, so I can learn the ropes before I go off on my own. I've applied to companies, hotels, conference centres, restaurants, golf courses, etc - everywhere I can think of that would employ their own wedding planners (and event planners in general, as well) and I've finally hit a wall. I'm completely stuck! Everyone is impressed that I'm certified (and am taking a course in Destination Weddings as well) but everyone wants to hire someone with experience... I've only helped a few friends organize their own weddings, as favors, not as their official planner. I've even offered to volunteer my time in exchange for the experience and pictures to put in my portfolio, but that's fallen short, too. I don't know where to look next, and it's getting awfully discouraging. Does anyone have any tips they can offer to someone looking to get into the business?
Thanks so much! :)

Cheers.
-Michelle

it really sounds like you've been barking up good trees! i was lucky in that i've started working with a current wedding planner and that's how i get my gigs. so you could try googling the planners in that area and seeing if you can intern or assist them and work up from there. or if you'd like to make your own name, maybe advertise on craigslist.org or theknot.com and start out with really low prices to get experience and build a portfolio?
