Float issue (maybe?) I keep having this issue but forget to ask for help, mainly because it's kind of hard to explain: Here I have a sidebar div and a text/content div, both within a container div, and then a footer div outside the container ( here's the CSS). The sidebar div is set to "float: left", the text div is not positioned, and the footer div is set to "clear: both". The issue appears when the height of the text div is less than the height of the sidebar div - then the footer jumps up to match the height of the text div as opposed to the sidebar div. I've worked around it by setting a height for the sidebar, but then I have to manually change that every time the sidebar's height changes. I have the same issue on another site where the sidebar div (float:left) and the content div (not defined) are within a container div, and the footer div (clear:both) is outside it, except here the footer stays below the sidebar but the defined background of the content div jumps up to match the height of the content div as opposed to the sidebar's, which led me to believe that it's not the footer being outside the container that's the problem. ...I hope that made at least some sense, I can try to clarify if it didn't. Any help would be greatly appreciated! | | Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 | 1:51 pm [cant_wake_up]

ranking and clients What are some things that my client could do to get their webpage to rank higher on Google and other search engines? She was asking and I'm very new at SEO so I can't tell her much. I've done everything I can think of to optimize the site, but don't know if there's something she could do. I've looked it up as much as I could, and all pages tell me the same things about the site, and nothing about anything else. Do you have any resources you'd recommend her read? I know there's another term other than SEO as isn't SEO just the website itself? I don't know. But learning's fun, so hey. | | Saturday, May 10th, 2008 | 1:38 pm [me_langel]

screen resolution question Last time I posted here, people were quite helpful, so I thought I'd ask you guys again to help me with a design problem.
I'm designing a site that works well with 800 x 600 monitors except for one graphic in the right bottom corner of the screen. I've written an alternate stylesheet in which the graphic disappear with judicious use of the overflow property.
So now what I'd really like is to find a javascript code that will detect the resolution and use this style sheet instead of the default when appropriate. My javascript skills are pretty much limited to stealing other people's code, so if someone could find something that requires a minimum of tinkering, that would be awesome.
Thanks so much in advance! | 11:39 am [pkbarbiedoll]

Forced refresh on secure sites Is there a best practice with auto-refresh times on secure sites? (So sensitive info isn't left on a screen for hours, for others to look at). | 2:02 am [shikkaba]

Photo Gallery Help i am trying to add a photo gallery to a web site. It would be nice to have one where they just put new photos in a folder and the gallery is updated. Does the slideshow thing on this page do this?: http://www.hatterasnetworks.com/default.aspx?pagename=CashCowVideosYou see this slide show everywhere, but I can't find the source. Does anyone know where to find it? Or other suggestions? | 4:23 pm [nikitabrown55]

displaying statistics on a website In an attempt to grow my skills, and maybe learn a bit about php I would like to create or tinker with something similar to this: http://morale.erikbenson.com/ or I would like for data to be entered somehow and then displayed in a chart like this spiffy one: http://www.alistapart.com/d/accessibledata/example-timeline.htmlI know this probably involves PHP and a mysql database - both things i want to learn alot more about. I was wondering if there is actually anything out there like this already that is open source? Thanks! | 11:33 am [durandel]

Illustrator resources I've had Illustrator for a long time now, but never once cracked it open. I don't know of many web designers who use it that often. I mean, I know what it does (vector art), but then I have a couple of questions.
What do you use Illustrator for? Personally and professionally (if at all). Can't I get comparable results in Photoshop? Any good resources to point me the right way?
I kind of feel bad for ignoring Illustrator. I'm half hoping that my skepticism of its abilities is unfounded and then I will do some crazy-amazing art with it. I also want to expand my range beyond Photoshop and Flash.
Thank you all. | 4:44 pm [bsb87angel]

safari hack or something? Hi, I'm having problems with my web layout. It looks fine in IE, but it looks really bad in Safari! I have no idea where the problem lies... I think it has got something to do with the IDs... 'cause http://nuseconomicsalumni.org/currentmembers.php looks fine in safari, whereas the main page (and any page that doesn't have the left menu) doesn't. Here's a snippet of the css file (if it helps, else just view the file directly) /*** Sidebars ***/
#leftside,#rightside { margin:0; padding:0 10px 10px; width:165px; }
#leftside { float:left; margin-right:20px; }
#rightside { float:right; margin-left:10px; # }

Seeking freelance web developer for commercial website I'm about to launch a business. I have a website up, but it has some serious flaws. I'm an IT guy (Unix systems admin), but not a web developer. So, I'm having a lot of trouble finishing the website, and I'm looking to hire a freelance web developer. Someone was kind enough to suggest I post here. Here are some details and requirements: - Knowledge of flash. A flash movie currently exists on the page that needs heavy modification. - Knowledge of CSS and HTML. Modification to the page requires expert knowledge of both. - Good design skills. The current design is far from perfect, and many improvements can and should be made. The ability to spot other improvements that I may have missed would be a huge plus. - Good enough skills with Photoshop or other image editing software to be able to work with the website images. - Work with paypal payment and subscription integration to sell services is a huge plus - Knowledge of how to increase google organic listing is a huge plus If you're interested please email me at support@beaconvps.com as soon as possible so we can make arrangements and decide if it's a good fit. Thanks for reading! | | Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 | 1:59 pm [nikitabrown55]

ie6/son of suckerfish issue Ah so after launching a huge website ive been getting email from a few ie6 users saying the 2nd level drop downs disappear after the 2nd or 3rd one down. I checked ie6 and this seems to be true. Ive googled several different phrases to find a fix for this. I'm just wondering if anyone could take a look and help me? http://www.dmu.edu/com/The navigation on the left hand side under the Doctor of osteopathic medicine, or anatomy, or biomedical sciences. As a temporary solution ive been telling the users to download and install ie7 - which i know is probably beyond their technical knowledge but i cant think of what else to do. Any help is grrrrrrrrreatly appreciated. thanks! | 12:50 pm [shahrizai]

I work at a small but growing company, and with that, my role was set out to implement web designs. Get the design from the designers and skin it to our CMS, pretty straightforward. I really enjoy this, the frontend of websites is where I like to work the most. But more and more my role is becoming programmer and all-around whatever person. I'm not interested in programming web apps, my job is to take those apps and make them suitable for view by the users. I can spend entire days in the backend, which frustrates me because I have a basic knowledge of programming and can edit small things (SQL query results printed in a loop? Sure! Advanced apps involving calculating shipping rates for several different countries? Gah!), but I'm not in any way qualified to work on things like ecommerce. My morale goes down when I'm stuck with this stuff - I mean, if you're not sure what you're doing, of course you are going to feel like crap. And now I've got a Flash app using Flash remoting and all sorts of advanced techniques.
My question is, is this the norm for people who work at companies? Of course freelancers have to handle most aspects, but do I just need to get to a larger company where there's enough manpower that everyone has their defined roles? We're under pressure right now and not working at full capacity - it was better last year when we had two full-time programmers, but now we're down to 1 full-time programmer/manager, 1 IT/intermediate programmer and me.
Are there jobs out there anymore for people who just want to work with the frontend? There's a reason I chose not to go for a Comp Sci degree! ;) | 10:46 am [kungfuey23]

insurance? Hi all
Do any of you freelance web designers have liability insurance? I want to place bids on the state website jobs but most require insurance. How much do you pay? what are good agents?

Freelance Clients - Wanna Beat 'em to death For the past few months I've had a freelance web client that's been asking me for just about everything under the sun. I try to comply with his requests and get everything online as quickly as possible. He will yammer at me for 2 weeks non-stop calling me at all hours of day and night for changes to his site that range from text updates to animation banners, to updating his company's myspace page. When I say his company, I mean him. He is a promoter of local musical talent and any other company he can work with to make money. He's been at this for about a year and I've not seen any demonstrative growth in his work. That aside, I finished what he asked me to do this week and sent him and invoice detailing every little thing he asked me to do. Then he sent me this letter: Hey Sean check out this site http://www.kanyeuniversecity.com/ this is a cool cartoon animation view. Maybe you can do something like this image in a view of the city of champaign with us a cartoon animation characters?
I took a quick glance at Kayne's site and about fainted. It's cool. It's really cool site and way beyond my capabilities with the equipment and time that I have. This client has CONTINUOUSLY asked if I could do something like this site or other sites which work from a completely FLASH interface. Here's the letter I sent him back.
A full concept Flash animation with storefronts music sounds and interactive characters would run about $XX,XXX and would take about 8 months to build. Plus I'd need about 1/2 the money up front. And it would not have all the abilities the Kanye site does.
What you're asking for is too time consuming on my part and too costly on yours. You can check around but you wont be able find a keeper price for what you're asking.
The fact is that you keep setting your sights on Flash animation and don't realize the cost of time and effort that is required. Starting from scratch and recreating ALL the animations on your site's front page took me about 5 hours to complete. To do the updates to add in the (customer) ad took 3 hours for the animation and 2 for the just making the images to stick in there. If you asked any web designer how long it took to do Kayne's site, they would tell you it took years to build and test before releasing it online for the public.
It's a fun idea if you have lots of funds and time to produce. For the turn around you need for the things you ask for, I would stick to things are not so intricate. Flash is fun, and fun to build. But the time and cost required is too much for both our parts.
So, I would say NO to any FLASH CARTOONS OR INTERFACES for the foreseeable future. Any animation that takes up more that 10 SECONDS to watch online will take too long to produce and be too costly.
I'd advise going with something that would be easier to maintain and produce. Caricatures with text. NON-animated pictures that introduce a character or a band. Simple dissolves or simple motion animation like what is on your site now would be a better start.
He responded by saying that I was right and we'd stick to the things we've already done in the promotion of his site. But, all of this has taught me an important lesson when dealing with freelance clients. Most are cheap and don't realize the value of your time.
If they ask for a project is something that you know will take too long for the amount they offer you , say "NO." I would say say "HELL, NO!" but you want to keep some modicum of professionalism.
If they still wont listen and keep bugging you about say: "It'll take too long for when you want it and cost more than you want to spend for it."
That seems to shut them up and get them out of your hair.

I have done this before, but for some reason now, my DOCTYPE declarations aren't validating. Here is what the W3C validation page says when I validate my entire index page: ( screenshot of the errors )Anyone care to enlighten me on how to get the DOCTYPE to validate? Thanks.
