You Will Need:

  • US5/3.5mm needles, straight or circular (this is not knit in the round)
  • worsted weight yarn, 2 colors
  • tapestry needle
  • to know how to knit fair-isle or intarsia (or at least be able to figure out the basics, this is very simple)


Okay, don't be afraid of the fair isle or intarsia or whatever it is! See? I don't even know which it is and I've made a half-dozen of them so far. It's really basic, this is only my second try at it. I used your average, cheap Red Heart Super Saver for this.

paw chart

Sorry that it's a bit blurry, that happened when I enlarged it. Also, it looks a bit disproportionate because it was knitting graph paper, but it'll look alright when finished.

Steps:
Cast on 35 stitches in main color (you may need to add or subtract stitches based on your wrist size)

Row 1: Purl
Row 2: Knit 15 stitches, switch colors
Rows 2-16: Follow chart
Row 17: Knit
Row 18: Cast off in purl

Sew sides with tapestry needle.

*cringe* I hope those steps are right, as I'm hopeless at following patterns -- much less making them. Basically, there should be two finished rows of the main color below and above the pawprint.

Gryffindor wristbands
Pawprint and "Sirius Lives" wristbands in Gryffindor colors.

Sirius Lives chart
"Sirius Lives" chart (fair isle).

Note: I watched POA again after I made a few of these, and Padfoot's pawprints don't have the nail marks, so feel free to cut those out. I like them, personally.

Also, if anyone has any comments or critique on my pathetic "pattern", it would totally be appreciated. :D

The gauge is 5 stitches/inch, and the circumference is approximately 7 inches, but I didn't measure it before I sewed it up so it might have stretched a bit since I've been wearing it.

:D I'm horrible with the actual measurements, since I make everything up as I go. I try to take notes as I go, but I inevitably frell that up and wind up having to count the stitches once the thing is finished...

I do that too. >_> I mess around with things while I am making them, too, and then rip them back if it doesn't look like they are turning out properly. My mother thinks I'm crazy and that I'll never finish anything.

LOL, my mother's waiting for me to make something "sensible" (i.e. NO MORE SCARVES). I think that blanket in the background of the first pic is the only "sensible" thing I've ever made...

oh, no, he wants the sweater with a big R on it. We were talking about harry potter stuff and I showed him that.

It really wouldn't be that hard to do, though; blow it up a bit, make sure the gauge is correct, and boom :)

I figured he'd ask for something like those wristwarmers, but nooooooo he had to be more "needy". heh :)

Those are very cute!

I think that those are simple enough that I could figure out how to make them from just the chart and the photo.

But if you really want to include a pattern, I'd revise it, just for practice at writing patterns.

First, if there are supposed to be two plain rows at the start, then the colorwork should start on Row 3, not Row 2. (Unless you're including the cast-on, of course.)

Next, do specify gauge and size.

I would clean up the edges of the chart (so that it had a border of whole rectangles, and not little jagged things) and add row numbers to it.
Cleaning it up would let you direct your audience to "knit 11, work chart, knit 11", which is clearer (and more conventional) than telling them which stitch is the first colored one on some particular row. (If this was bigger, or on something that wasn't rectangular, I'd tell you to tell them to use stitch markers.) Row numbers make things easier to deal with too.

Also, if you want to include blank rows at the top and bottom edge of the chart, you should write Row 1 as "purl 11, work chart, purl 11", even though that particular row of the chart is just a stripe of background color.

You might want to make it clear that this is stockinette-that is, write out instructions for both Row 1 and Row 2, specifying that they are knit and purl, and then instruct your readers to repeat Rows 1 and 2.

Now, have I got any Gryffindor-colored yarn in my stash?

Oh, thanks SO MUCH for that. I'll revise it when I get home (I'm on my lunch break right now.) My idea with putting that up was just the photos and the chart, since it really is just a simple rectangle when it comes down to it.

Before the opening Friday night I have to:
Finish getting my robes to an appropriate level of dirtiness (haven't been washed in 12 years, after all)
Finish sewing, distressing and dirtying the striped bit that goes under them.
Dye my hair black.
Draw a Marauder's map.
Cook Pumpkin Pasties and Cauldron Cake.
Coordinate with my Remus and James.

And now I have to (Yes, HAVE TO) knit a bloody wristband too. Thanks a lot.

Those are so awesome that I ran to try one as soon as I saw it! I managed to make one, but since it's my first fairisle on straights... eh, not that great. ((it's currently serving as clothing for a stuffed animal)). I plan to try again though :3

Just a thought, how bad would it look in Garter stitch d'you think? I'm just not a fan of doing stockinette on straights that small... purling isn't my strong suit on small needles ><;

Those are so super cute. I knew I had to make one as soon as I saw it. My first fair isle ever. =D I made the pawprint, and I'm very happy with it. It turned out great once I finally got the technique down. I think I'm going to make several, they're so wonderful. The one I made turned out a bit too big (that's with doing 29 stitches to the rectangle) so I'm going to switch to smaller needles. I'm going to try making patterns for all four Marauders, it really was a wonderful inspiration. -absolutely loves them-

Wow, these patterns are so awesome! I did a shot at one myself, the paw print, it took me about... two, three hours (I haven't knit anything in ages). And it came out looking a bit alright, hahah. My paw looks a bit off though. I'll most definitely try again tomorrow now as I have the technique down. And then I'll move on to 'Sirius Lives' :D Thanks for the patterns!

Hiya! I'm not a member of this community and I have no idea how I found this pattern (boredom? random websurfing?) but I just wanted to tell you that it's neat-o and I made one of each for my friend.

Also, it was my first time doing fair isle or whatever the heck this is, so in essence, your post was what inspired me to finally learn how to do it :)

I've got a couple of questions for you about the "Sirius Lives" one (and I feel kinda dumb that I can't figure it out on my own!)

1) how many stitches did you use? it looks different from the paw print.

2) should I start at the top of the chart or the bottom of the chart? ie: the top of "Sirius" of the bottom of "Lives." I've tried it a couple of different times and my writing keeps coming out backwards. which leads to . . .

3) should I start the chart pattern on a knit row or a purl row?

I'm trying to do this for a Christmas gift, and for all I'm a great knitter, I'm terrible at figuring out patterns on my own. *needs directions or death. whichever*

Don't feel dumb :)

1) By stitches, I assume you mean rows. There are two rows of stockinette above the letters, and two rows below. Since the two rows of letters (with two rows in between) are shorter than the paw print, yeah, it's shorter overall (16 rows total).

2) Bottom (the first stitch of the chart should be the bottom right corner of the "S" in "LIVES").

3) Knit (it'd be easiest I think to knit the first row after casting on, then purl, then begin knitting again and start the chart).

LOL, don't worry, I can't write a proper pattern to save my life so the best I can do is describe what I did as much as possible but it isn't always clear.

Hi. I'm a beginner knitter and I'm a bit confused here.

1.Why is there change colour in row 2?
2.Is the pattern row 3-16 or 2-16?
3.The pattern for the pawprint starts with purl or knit (after knit row is purl row, right?)

I'm trying to make this and messed up a couple of times. HELP!!
