Slytherin iPod Case
Got an ipod yesterday, so clearly it needed something...

Sorry about the flash, it washed the colors out, but you can see the stitches pretty well:

Instructions:

I don't know how much yarn it used, but it wasn't much. I used Red Heart supersaver and size US7 DPNs (though you could just use straights and sew it up on one side). Also, I've never been able to follow patterns, much less write them, so forgive my lack of proper terminology :D Color A should be the main color (i.e. Green = Slytherin, Maroon = Gryffindor), color B is the contrasting color (i.e. Silver = Slytherin, Gold = Gryffindor.) Inspired by the POA-style house scarves. Oh, this is for a 20gig by the way (don't know if the 40 is bigger, but I'm thinking it won't fit a mini...)

- Cast on 30 stitches
- Knit 8 rows of the color A (green) in the round. If you're using straights, knit/purl 8 rows of stockinette.
- Switch to color B (silver) for 1 row.
- Switch back to A (1 row), then again to B (1 row).
- Knit 10 rows color A (green)
- Switch to color B for 1 row.
- Switch back to A (1 row), then again to B (1 row).
- Knit 8 rows color A (green).
- On the 8th row, cast off the first 15 stitches, and continue knitting the rest.

For the flap:

Row 1: Knit
2: Purl
3: Knit the first 7 stitches, then cast off the 8th (to make a 1-stitch button hole for the earphone jack), and continue to knit the rest of the stitches in that row (you should have 14 stitches on the needle when done.)
4: Purl 7 stitches, cast on 1, continue purling
Rows 5-13: Knit/Purl (to make stockinette)
14: Knit 6 stitches, cast off 3, knit the rest (12 stitches on the needle)
15: Purl 6, cast on 3, purl the rest (15 stitches on the needle)
16: Knit
17: Purl
18: Knit
19: Purl
20: Cast off

Sew up the bottom with a tapestry needle, and add a button. Weave in ends. (If you used straights instead of DPNs, sew up the side as well.)

The flap on mine is a bit longer than I'd like, so feel free to skip a row or two of the stockinette. Also, the button hole is a bit large for the button I used, but I kept it at 3 stitches because I wanted it to be symmetrical (I'm going to tighten it later with some thread if it becomes a problem).

Hopefully that was clear enough, if you have any questions I'll try and clear it up a bit. :D

Hey ? for ya.. I did a cozy for my phone last week and had a prob with the flap.. how did you cast off stitches in the center of your piece and not have the edge of your flap look all funky looking?

Did you do it in the round?

All I did was (when I started a new round) cast off the first half of the stitches, then stop, and continue knitting as normal. How do your edges look funky?

Thanks!

Found it in my mom's sewing desk, actually, so unfortunately I can't help you out... it looks like it was from a coat or something.

Ooh, love it! Just got a new iPod and I've been keeping it in... a sock. ;) Yeah, I know... sad. But, now I'll made one of these, since I have Slythie yarn left over from my scarf. Thanks for sharing the pictures. :D

Thanks! :)

Yup, just had some leftovers laying around (I've got at least 3 shades of green and gray each from scarves). I need something to keep it from getting butchered in my bookbag... heh.

Oh, you are LEGENDARY. I learnt to knit last year and got ahead of myself and told everyone I'd make them iPod covers. *laughs* They're still waiting. o_o But Harry Potter iPod covers? They're gonna die! It looks fantastic!

Whoa... high praise there *g*

Thanks! I'm going to experiment some more next time, when I have more time (I wanted something quick so I could protect it in my bookbag going to classes tomorrow). Maybe try to add a snitch or paw or something, when my intarsia stops looking like crap, hehe :)

I don't think I'll ever try intarsia because it looks so hard, haha. :) I'd probably sew a house patch on it, or something!

You could make SPORT covers, with their Quidditch numbers on them, à la Prisoner of Azkaban [movie]. :D

That's really great! Wanna work out a patter now with a hole where the screen is and a much longer flap with two buttons--one above and below the screen? Or maybe a flap going up and one going down that both use the same button above the screen, but that sounds complicated.

Thank you! I thought about making a pattern to show the window, but I wanted something that would prevent it from being scratched so that would defeat the purpose. Not sure what you mean by the latter though, heh.

I made an image to explain what I mean. Dotted red lines are the screens, red sideways t's are the buttons (what? your buttons aren't shaped like t's??).

In the first one, the flap goes down past the screen hole and buttons both above and below it. Then you can just undo the bottom button when you want to see the screen.

In the second one, there are two flaps. The first like you have yours, the second starting below the screen hole. They both button above the screen on the same button. Then you can just unbutton the bottom flap and look at the screen.

Obviously, there's stuff on the sides of the screen and the sides of the cover in both, but I have limited drawing skills.

Of course, both of these are assuming you'll be using the wire control to control it and just want to look at the screen to see the name of the song. If you actually want to use the controls on the ipod, you'll still have to take it out.

Yea. I finished mine last night. I'm just making a handle for mine now so it's easier to grab. I didn't have any house colors to spare, so I just used some old cammo yarn that I had laying about. It looks pretty good, but I kind of miss placed the hole for the antenna a bit, and I have yet to find a button, but it works pretty well. If I can find my camera I will post a pic of it later.

I made one for my mini last night. I had to make it smaller and change the location of the earphone hole. Due to my rush, I only put one band of contrasting color in each set instead of 2. I'll post a picture of it when I get home tonight.

Wow. That is amazing. I first saw this page months ago and fell in love, although I don't have an ipod, and I don't really mind my cd player. Today I wore my just completed slytherin CoS scarf to school, and one of my friends who just lost his iskin (I don't quite know what they call the flexible sleeves) asked if I'd make him a case in my slytherin colors! He doesn't even like HP _at all_ so I was delighted and spent half an hour looking through a hp_knitting archive before I remembered google. Thank you for this pattern!

Well whadayaknow, a decent looking iPod cover. I've been scouring the web for patterns for the 3rd gen nano I just got for Christmas. Yours looks very well done. The only feature I'd like to see is the openings for the screen and the round controls. Hmmm, just wondering if yours can be modified without screwing it up.

Thanks a bunch for posting the pics and pattern. Great work!

Thanks!

Yeah, I was mostly concerned with protecting the wheel and screen, which is why there's no openings (it would defeat the purpose, LOL.)
