Nasty Rumours
So has anyone else heard that Wawa is slowly divesting itself of the non gas locations? Friend of me was telling me this last night.

He lives in the Phila burbs and he went into what he thought was a Wawa and ended up being in a Pantry 1 Food Mart.

So has anyone else been noticing this? Heard any of the rumours?

i have! it's true, actually, from what i can tell. those that they can't convert are being sold off , they'll be strictly gas stores.
the only reason i know is that i stopped at the wa i used to work at, and one of the shift managers told me. that particular wa is getting closed by the end of the month to expand the building, and they've got to hook up all the electrical fun, because they're becoming a gas store. the first store i've seen actually converted as opposed to the places where they build gas stores down the street and tear down/sell the original.

This is true from what I've heard. I go to the University of Maryland and this past Sunday they closed one of the few Wawas in the area...that store was always busy, though, and I wish it would have stayed. The 7-11 across the street just isn't the same.

I know this happened years ago to at several of the non-gas locations in DE, which changed to the Pansy Pantry 1.

Around me, there's a couple of Pantry 1's where Wawas used to be, one store that was turned into a restaurant, and even one old store that has been converted into a realtor's office.

First off, totally luv your minimoose icon!

Second, they have Pantry 1 down in Philly? I live up in north Jersey and the Wawa that used to be near me is a Pantry 1 now. What a shame, I go to school on the Main Line and I don't know where they can put a gas store near here other than KOP?

It'll be interesting if this is confirmed by corporate. I was thinking about the new ones planned here in Ocean County, NJ, and for the most part it holds up: Mathistown and Center replacing Mathistown and Radio in Little Egg Harbor, Forked River (Manchester Avenue) moving across the street, even the new Manahawkin one isn't too far away from Beach Haven West (though BHW closing is just my supposition, and has yet to be confirmed.)

But I'm thinking of Toms River, and the distance between Vaughn Avenue (actually River Road) and the new gas one scheduled for near Hooper Avenue. Does Wawa really want to do that? I remembering during training being told that Vaughn was one of the top sellers of coffee (of course, this was before the gas store at Garfield and 37 opened.)

And would they really sell off the Ocean Acres store if they couldn't convert it to a gas store? I've heard that the store next door won't sell to Wawa, and should Wawa sell that store, they'll be at a disadvantage: there's a Cumberland Farms a few blocks away also in Ocean Acres.

There is at least one bucking the trend - the Doylestown, PA store is expanding its parking. It's the only one for several miles and is always packed.

And the Normandy Beach (granted, built four or so years ago) and the recently-opened Long Beach Township in NJ are new build stores without gas.

I should clarify: I know that's it's a trend now to build Wawas with gas. I know that if they can, they will expand the store to include gas (Pleasant Plains, in NJ), or build a new store _close by_ with gas and close the old one (Little Egg Harbor, Forked River.)

What I can't see is Wawa simply closing down stores that don't have gas. I can't see Wawa closing down Vaughn Avenue in Toms River simply because it doesn't sell gas (or for that matter, closing down the other non-gas stores on Route 37, the one on Route 527 by Wal-Mart or the one by Commonwealth.)

Possibly adding to the confusion and thinking that stores are closing is that #953 will be closed temporarily (at least the gas portion) to do some work on vapor recovery, or somesuch. I dunno if other stores will have the same work done.

This past weekend, I attempted to go to the Wawa in Bordentown NJ only to be told that it is closed for a month until late October while it undergoes renovations (meanwhile, it had been open for a good 2 weeks while they were doing some preliminary construction on and around the existing structure). There is enough land around this Wawa that I could envision it easily converting to a gas-dispensing site.

If it's true that it's a blanket policy, then that's a terrible decision. All of the Wawae I've been in on even an occasional basis[1] have been driven primarily by foot traffic. Even if they had enough room to add gas (which none of them do), it would completely disrupt the existing customer base, which is large and (I presume) profitable.

Don't worry - non-gas stores are here to stay. As long as they can accomdate the offering, they're fine.

I'd be a lot more reassured by this statement if I knew what this sentence meant. :-)

(LOL..Now that's funny!)

I'm told Wawa will continue to invest in gas stores whenever possible BUT if a dynamite site becomes available it would still be considered. So, it seems the rule of thumb is.....build a gas store whenever possible.

I'm afraid it's very true. I went to visit the College Park Maryland store today only to be greeted by an empty store. Apparently it closed at the end of september. Let me tell you, the worst feeling in the world is getting geared up to have some good Wawa food (I haven't had some in weeks) and then be denied. As a DC area resident, I am very upset by this. there aren't nearly enough wawa's around here to satiate me. The loss of this Wawa is especially hurtful because it was the only metro accessible wawa. There are rumors of a new Wawa with gas going up in Beltsville MD, near route 1 and Rhode Island Ave. According to this article, a wawa rep says that their plans are to feature stores with gas stations.

The Wawa near the University of Maryland closed because the landlord would not renew the lease,he has other plans for that space.

Just to add to the baa-ing chorus, yes, they're phasing out non-gas stores. I think ones in critical areas will still be around, though. Up the street from my store that I work at, there's a non-gas store that has no plans on closing down.
