AboutA dear friend posted about a push-reel mower that he inherited from his great-grandfather. It still works beautifully, 80 years after it was made. It runs on people-power, so there is no gas to buy, no pollution to the earth, and minimal moving parts to break down. He observed that he's seen folks take two different approaches to scaling back: Ingalls Tech and Waltons Tech.
Ingalls Tech - IT - comes from the stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder, talking about growing up on the prairie in the late 1800's. This was, undoubtedly, a difficult life. VERY difficult.
Waltons Tech - WT - comes from the 1970's TV show 'The Waltons' - which shares the story of a family living in rural Virginia during the 30's and early 40's. This is a much more approachable and sustainable level of technology - it's possible to live QUITE comfortably with this level of tech. Cutting down, cutting back, growing your own food, minimal plastics... this might be a sustainable goal.
The purpose of this community is to draw together folks who are interested in this ideal. To cut down on our consumption of imported junk from China. To garden and grow. To compost. To raise chickens. To teach our children that we DON'T need the latest Dora the Explorer doll. To share ideas, tips, and tricks with each other to create a sustainable future.
