I'm allergic to the damn shirt. I'm told to just wear my normal shirt under it and tough it out today. I plan on getting up and going to the mall tomorrow to find a polo that doesn't make me want to rip my skin off.

Then I'm told the new dress code is crew cut or polo shirt. You mean the same damn shirt I wore this morning that wasn't allowed by the dress code? Basstards!

So, the store I work at has started cutting back on overtime severely. No overtime whatsoever and it's enforced to the extreme. I work in the photo lab and at the moment, we're understaffed. They fired one of our associates in May and our department manager has been filling in for management and hasn't been in the lab either. It's me and two other associates. So if one calls in sick we're basically screwed. Three weeks ago, one of the associates called in. I was on until 5 and the second gal was off. They called in the associate that was off and she came at 5 and worked until 9, expecting that they'd sign off on the overtime seeing as she came in on her DAY OFF. Nope. She had to cut the four hours she worked - which means she basically came in on her DAY OFF and didn't get paid for it. So this is how Wal Mart wants to play now. Huh. Fast forward to almost three weeks later (yesterday) and yet again, we have an associate call in. I was on my day off and we had one associate in the lab until 5. Lo and behold, I get a call at home asking if I'd come in and close. I told the personnel associate absolutely not. I live out of town, the gas money round trip isn't worth it for me to come in and NOT GET PAID FOR IT. They asked the associate who was working until 5 to stay until close. She told them no too, not unless they were going to pay her. The department manager left at four and the only associate in the lab left at five like she was scheduled. The assistant manager told her when asked who was going to close the lab that they would 'fumble through it'. And I'm opening this morning.

*facepalm*

So this is really how Wal Mart is going to play now? Come in on your day off and not get paid for it? Really people?!??!?

The point of my post is that I'm wondering if this is an ethics issue. Should we be contacting Home Office about this? I really want to because it's grossly unfair. And illegal maybe? Am I overreacting? Should we be expected to come in on our day off and suck up the fact that we won't get paid for it? I don't think so.

Thoughts? Opinions?

I have worked at three different Walmarts over the span of three years. For the past year and a half my 2nd and 3rd store have let me wear my [knock off] crocs (you know those ugly ruber shoes that feel o-so comfy for those who stand for hours on their feet). No one has said a word (CSS/CSMs, managers, store managers, and even district). We have been having cashier meetings lately every first paycheck of the month. My previous two stores never had them. They also have these meetings around 4pm each time and I'm at work around that time. I've spoken directly to many [CSS/CSM]s but have not been allowed to go to the meetings. Apparently the dress code was brought up at the meeting (about shoes). Also my co-workers brought up my name when talking about the dress code (gotta love some co-workers and how tattle tale like they can be). Recently I went on a several day vacation due to a wedding. Before I left it was not brought up to me that I could not wear my shoes. I even retuned Saturday and worked Sunday without anyone mentioning my shoes (once again CSS/CSMs and management). Then out of the blue today I get YELLED at like a child by a [CSS/CSM]. [They] used a very condesending voice along with very condescending words. This is not the first time [this person] has done this. I guess what I am mostly upset about is that not only was this not brought up to be before my vacation but it was also not brought up to me right after my vacation. Then to add to that I was yelled at and treated like a child. I was told that they were "tacky" (quoted from the CSS/CSM) and that if a fork lift ran over my feet that the shoes would not protect them. The last part I found hilarious because I don't believe that the simple tennis shoes associates wear would either. It just ticks me off I cannot wear these anymore because I've tried everything (dr scholls shoes & several different brands of inserts) and the [knock off] crocs are the only shoes that "work" for me. And to end this on a lovely note the [CSS/CSM] that yelled at me came up later and told me the above quote: "Don't shoot the messanger" -_-
Now, I love how when I give them the sheet they all of the sudden start cussing and yelling at me!(even though the manager signed it) and saying that they weren't on the drawer sometimes I have to walk them to the computer and pull up the electronic journal to prove they were on the register. No, I can't call a manager and have them make an exception to this. There isn't a damn thing they can say or do to change this reality. As a very general rule, movies usually appear in theaters and remain there for several months before they are released on DVD/Blu-Ray.
Ok, it's offical, we don't train people or SHIT any more. First off, I go to housewares looking for an electric popcorn popper. How fraking hard can that be?! There was no one in the dept. that were suposed to be there, but two minor cashiers were zoning, a boy and a girl. I ask one, the boy, and he jumps up, says "I don't knwo, but I will look" and he started pacing the asiles looking for it. The girl stops him t whine about some wooden utensils and he says calmly "I'll help you if you can help me find this." She asked what we're looking for, I tel her..

Me: An electric popcorn popper
Her: You mean..a microwave?
Me: No, a popcorn popper
her: You know, it's easier in a microwave...so what do I do with these?

And she turns back tot he boy. Uh...idiot!! Customer service comes first, and you don't brush off a customer because you don't knwo what they're talking about. It's not like I was confusing or any thing.

But that's ok, she wasn't the worst empoyee of the night. Oh no, of course not...My and Lonewolf get groceries, get in what looks liek a shortest line and...

First off, our cart was no where near full. In fact our total came to $53...

I left LW with the cart as I ran to the atm...wait in line there, ake sure I got the cash I wanted, and return to the line. She hasn't started our order yet, and the lady in front of us was paying. What I noticed was half the belt was empty. Becuase te cashier must be scared of her belt of something. She waited till the lady in front of us was walking away before turning on her belt, and shutting it back off the moment out groceries got close. She would even extend her reach to grab something so she didn't need to turn on the belt.

Now...bagging. We all took this CBL, we all know (And logic should state) Heavy stuff on bottom, light on top, boxes on the sides, meat by itself unless told.

Yeah...Our store is known for having leaky packages of meat...and all ym meat went in the same bag...cool, cool....and so did some of the cups of yogurt, presliced cheese and a single serve icecream sundae. Uhhh...WTF? Fruits nad veggies, I don't mind, I can wash or cook them...but ready to eat foods!?! In bag two we have...a half gallon of milk...more yogurt (I only bought eight cups...why the hell did I need two bags) and some cans. Cashier must have had more faith int he seal of my yogurt then I did.

Oh yess, and she must be new becuase she hadn't mastered scanning with one hand and bagging with the other...each iten got scanned and, placed gently int he back using both hands. So of course she was slow as christmas.

Then we reach the end. I have two towels, and two coupons. She scans hte towels, scans one coupon, doens't work, scans agian, doesn't work, lather rinse repeat. Finally I stopped her becuase she had rang me up for five towels, but she had to scan the coupons first, so she scans the other one, it works...she voids out the three towels (And lsot the void button each time...seriosuly YOU JSUT PRESSED IT!), scanned the coupon she jsut scanned and LW nicely points out she needed the other one.

Oh yeah, and, since we've both been cashiers we're pretty good about pre-sorting out stuff so it's easier to not only put away t home, but bag...nope nope nope...Other then putting raw meat with ready to eat foods, and heavy items with fragile ones...she bagged her own way, and would scan the meat, then reach past everything cloest to her and pick something and...I wanted to correct her so badly. Yes, I was new once...but...seriously...

sut reminds me why I norally always bag myself.

Sometimes I don't understand how Walmart continues to thrive.

We have been getting loads of new associates from surrounding stores for our remodel. We have also hired piles of temps to do the remodel. The problem is that many of these people are given zero direction after orientation.

One day the assistant manager brings me a couple to train. I'm like, awesome, I'll have these guys up to speed in no time. They're good, intelligent people, but after the assistant dropped them off to me last week, they come back to me every single day for everything.

I have a couple problems with this.
1. I don't know what they are supposed to be trained to do. I want to make sure they are mostly up to speed by the time they go to their new store next week.
2. THEY don't know what they are supposed to be trained to do. They don't know what their job descrption even is, really. They said they were going to be working overnight, that's all they know. But they're temps setting up a new store, so they are probably not simply doing freight. As I understand it, they said everything seemed "rushed" when they were going over the paperwork. "This is your job description. Sign here." No time to read it.
3. Management doesn't really CARE what they do, and gives none of the newbies anything remotely useful to do. They basically just tell any newbie they find to pick this up, help this customer, pull that pallet. No actual information. It's like they are wandering mules, and it's annoying, unhelpful, and somewhat degrading, I think.
4. They have had multiple problems with misinformation. No one told them how to log onto the WIRE, or to do CBLs. They kept saying the system wasnt' working because they didn't know they'd been pressing the wrong thing on the computer. Turns out no one told them to put their store number in, not ours. We found this out like....yesterday instead of a week ago when it would have been useful. Seriously, these two did not know they were supposed to do CBLs until like 3 days ago.

I understand they are temps, but, seriously, this is stupid.

Then we have mobs of newbies wandering around in groups of four "zoning". They aren't zoning. They are standing around doing jack nothing, and having a good time of it. I brazenly approached a group who were "zoning" in toys, asked them to split into different aisles and explained how to zone. They patiently listened, and then just walked off. The entire freaking group of them.

Then they come back later, and said they were supposed to work a cart of picks for me. So I show them the cart, tell them which aisles the merchandise is on, and go do other things, I go in the backroom, and there's the cart I gave them, with one box worked on it. I had to take it back out myself and work it. It all went up.

At that point I called the assistant, so maybe he could find them something useful to do and keep them the hell away from me.

Then I was talking to an assistant later, and I was like "Well, what did you guys learn in training school?" He goes "We basically learned how to not scream at people, and stress management. We didn't learn anything about running an actual store. It was all philisophical corporate stuff."

*bangs head on wall* How does this company survive with a system like this? Argh.

Department Turnover

My fellow department managers/merchandise supervisors...stop me if you've heard this one before.

An associate of yours quits unexpectedly because A) he/she is moving and/or B) he/she will probably get fired anyway because their attendance sucks. (In my particular case, both of these apply.)

You find this information out from another associate of yours over the weekend, and when you go back in on Monday you learn that your store manager doesn't want to fill this associate's spot because they "can't afford it." (For the last couple of weeks, our reductions in hours have been blamed on a "$100,000+ loss" due to not selling enough air conditioners yet because we have thus far had an on/off summer with regards to hot weather. Bull crap.) Naturally, this bothers you because, well, your department has less coverage.

Yeah, all of this happened to me over the course of the past 48 hours. To an extent, I am glad that the associate in question is gone because she wasn't much of a worker anyway and, like I said, her attendance was lousy. She was best known for asking others in our department to switch shifts with her and then not coming in for the shift she took. (i.e. asking me to work her 12-9 and she would work my 8-5, only to not show up) Her termination was no doubt imminent, but I guess she chose to leave on her terms.

I'm not upset so much by the fact that she quit, but rather that our manager is being a cheapskate by not replacing her. You might be inclined to think that the Connection Center is such a small department that there's no need for 4 associates (myself included), but in our case you would be wrong. We are one of the highest volume wireless departments in our market, doing 60+ contracts in a good month. That was part of the reason why the department manager position for it was opened. (Many stores don't have a CC dept. mgr. due to lack of contract sales.) And I've been doing this job long enough to know that the department functions best when there are at least two people working all day, one opener (8-5) and one closer (12-9). There really isn't much need for a mid-shift (9-6) person Monday-Friday, but Saturdays are an altogether different story. Though under no circumstances should one person be scheduled in the CC all day, or at least not at my store.

Personally, I don't mind working weekends, though I will admit that I enjoy having them off. I'm more than willing to rotate them if need be, but there is one small problem: myself and one associate are not available until noon on Sundays and my other associate is completely unavailable on Sundays without exception. Myself and the other associate prefer not to work Sunday mornings because we are both churchgoers, though we don't mind working an occasional one. That was the beauty of having a fourth associate; she had an open availability. (I do too, save the Sunday morning exception, and honestly I don't think that's asking too much.)

I briefly conferred with my assistant regarding this and she said that what will probably end up happening is having some associates from electronics and photo cross-trained in the department so that they can work Sunday mornings. The two of us are going to talk more about this on Thursday. (There was one photo associate who was doing this for me before she got pregnant; she subsequently worked only in my department but then had her baby and then left permanently.) Word apparently travels very fast because shortly after I clocked in today I had no less than three people inquire about this opening in my department. (What can I say? I guess people love to work with me. :-D )

So yeah, I'm in a bit of a bind here. Just wondering who out there has experienced before and, well, how you went about handling it. In past times when an associate of mine left or got fired, they were almost instantly replaced.

Towards the end of my shift today I had a guy and his friend come up to me. The guy put a bag of dog food onto the belt. Typically the dog food has one UPC on the bottom (side B) and top (side A) of the bag. I went to scan the UPC on the bottom with the hand scanner and the guy put his hand over it the UPC. I went along with it and laughed. When I lifted the bag to scan the other UPC, he slapped the bag down on the belt. That's when I glared at him. He went about letting me ring it up and as he left he asked me if I was "cranky" that day. I replied with a "no, I'm just tired" and he left with his buddy. One day this will just all build up, I'll burst out at one of the idiots, and probably get fired. I get about 3-5 of these everyday.

Ok so I did like they said but now I'm wondering, 1) is that going to show up as going over my hours? (my schedule said 33 but the paid day off made it 34. something. 2) does that show up as a no call no show?

Also...does it show up as no call no show if you request a paid day off, it gets finalized, and then someone messes up and puts you down for that day?

I don't get how this keeps happening..why doesn't the computer system show a message that says the person was already approved to have off that day?

A bit of a dilemma...

Greetings peeps,

I've got something that I'd like to get off my chest, so read on if you're interested.

For six weeks, my store's electronics department manager is serving as the "instock guarantor" (or something to that effect) at another store in our market that is becoming a Supercenter. I'm not sure what the criteria were to be selected for such a position, or perhaps she just volunteered her services, but basically what it entails is making sure all of the store's new modulars are accurate in terms of traits and footages and whatnot. If they aren't, the guarantor has to call Home Office and resolve the issue(s) before the mod gets set. There's probably more to the job description, but that's all she told me.

Anyway, before said DM left she met with our assistant manager and asked if she could have one of our photo center specialists (an excellent, long-term associate who was at one time department manager over furniture) take care of her BAM screen and paperwork while she was away. Our assistant agreed to this and so did the photo associate, so all seemed to be well in that regard. Not for long, though. Apparently, another long-term associate (been with the company for 7+ years) who works in electronics and who also felt that she should have been selected as DM when the former one she worked with for a long time had to go on indefinite medical leave (she passed away last year) pitched a fit about this. She didn't like the fact that she wasn't the one left "in charge" or what have you because, as I said before, she has always felt that she should've been department manager and not the person who has held the position for over two years now. (Trust me, said associate wouldn't be able to hack it as a DM. Her ego and attitude are a little too big for her own good.) So she went to management with her complaints and, for whatever reason, they took her side and effectively put her in charge of getting all this stuff done while the real DM is away. The photo associate in question is more or less ambivalent about the whole thing, but I can tell when I talk to her about it that she's upset. After all, she got upstaged by someone who has never been a DM in her life and really doesn't know as much as she thinks she does. Classic case of someone being too big for their britches, so to speak.

Now, here's where things get even more interesting. For the past three days (Monday, yesterday, and today) the "interim DM" as I like to call her has shirked her newfound responsibilities when it came to the BAM screen. (As for paperwork she, ahem, "delegated" it to another dept. 5 associate.) All three times she has claimed that she was "too busy" to get it done because she was working freight, setting mods, binning, yadda yadda yadda. It was always some excuse. So who did management turn to? Their friendly neighborhood Connection Center manager, yours truly. Ordinarily, I do not mind helping out our electronics DM with her BAM screen at all, especially price changes. I seem to be that rare breed who actually enjoys doing them because they are a good time-killer and, for the most part anyway, are very easy to bang out. So yeah, all three days I was asked to take care of it and got it done without a problem.

Here's my issue: Because the interim DM consistently seems "too busy" to get the BAM screen done and I'm willing to pick up the slack if asked by management in the days ahead (if I'm not busy with my own projects of course), is it fair for any problems resulting from this to fall on my shoulders? I'm fairly proficient with price changes, negative onhands, and the like but I'm also only human and do make mistakes. So far, no shit has hit the fan, but I've got a funny feeling that it will soon. I've been thinking about letting the interim take the heat for this the next time she is "too busy" to do the job she bitched and moaned about wanting to do so badly to ensure that my ass is covered, but at the same time I also don't want the department to be screwed over due to her, umm, incompetence. What should I do? Our assistant is on vacation for several more days so I can't go to her, and I don't want to go to any other manager because I know all they will say is "suck it up and deal with it." Accountability seems to be a foreign concept to this company, or at least at my store.

Input is appreciated. But for the record, all those who are going to say something to the effect of "you should have volunteered to do this because your her neighbor and we're all one big happy family at Walmart" need not apply.

I know right now the store I work for isn’t hiring any full time people only part time. Could anyone tell me if this is just something relegated to my store or is it happening at your store. I read a report that said Wal-Mart is going to hire 40,000 full time employee’s my boss spoke up and told me it was only at new stores not existing ones.

I believe myself that if you can't do your job or do it efficiently then you shouldn't be working here. One more thing is that now at my store all the departments are being timed by a board it has the set time it should take your to do your isle. Not including down-stacking, spotting,

I don't mind if they would just adjust the times for say if you have to unload the truck or separate the freight yourself.
