Inventory
OK we just had inventory on Tuesday. It was terrible again - we are high shrink; again.
We had a new company doing the inventory. Management had been saying for the last 10 years that our bad inventories were because of the inventory company. Wonder what they will blame it on this year. This is our 3rd year to be high shrink. Why can they not see that part of the shrink is due to department managers not doing what they are suppose to do? Some of it is the thieves. We got the same speech again; thieves are not steal but a small percent. When we have 2 big screen TV's and 2 computers, plus 3 laptops walk in a single night - Wake up management - thieves are stealing us blind.
How was everyone else's inventory?

Easy. They grab them and run out of a fire exit door. We have woods on 3 sides of the store. We are a small farm town with a big supercenter. We have great sales (about as good as the supercenter about 30 minutes away that is the second largest city in our state). We are also not in the best side of town.
They broke into the case that had the laptops in it and stole them 2 nights running. Now the laptops are locked in the back and just a box is out front.
We had a man walk out the front door with one of the biggest TV we have in a buggy. The alarm went off and he just kept walking. What was our 80 year little old lady door greeter going to do. By the time you can get management to answer you 30 minutes has gone by.

Wow that speshul indeed. -_-'

I know what you mean about the 30mins before a manager gets back to you. We have to pester and pester and pester them before they will call back or anything I remember the one time I actually got one to call me he sounded pissed at me for having paged -_-' All the other times everyones always "Well its too loud to hear back there" The hell is the point of paging them then? God forbid you need their help clocking in or something, better hope one walks by!

The same way they got out of my store with thirty iPods, fifteen laptops, between three to five Dell desktops, and dozens of LCD TVs. Grab and go.

Our inventory was on May 1 and it went really well, I guess. We even got free food (sandwich stuff) last week because of it.

Mine is Thursday. One of the co-managers was in tears over finding an unlabeled box yesterday. She then hugged me and told me that I was, "so so so amazing."

I'll keep you posted on the craziness.

You would think that Walmart would pay for armed guards at the doors. I betcha that if you added up armed guard costs against what was stolen that Walmart would still come out ahead.

We had guards (though un-armed) for about a year after one of our AM's was attacked in the parking lot, then we put in CCTV, so the guards were let go and we have people greeters from 9AM till 8PM...The age range is about 65 to 85, so I don't think they could stop anyone if they caught them !

The store I transferred from had uniformed, unarmed security guards from an outside company known as U.S. Security Associates. Prior to that, they had off-duty officers from the local PD watching the doors, but they stopped providing services due to some sort of pay disagreement.

Where I'm at now? Nothing but an APC who spends more time trying to be an assistant manager on the sales floor and a handful of elderly greeters. Of course, this place is a lot less ghetto than my old one.

Our inventory is next Monday the 19th, and although my store isn't quite 100% ready for it I think it will go fairly well.

And by "department managers not doing what they're supposed to do," what exactly do you mean? I'm curious because I want to make sure my department is perfect by Sunday evening.

Sitting in back doing price changes and not changing the price on the floor; if it is a mark up then the customer gets it for the old price. That is shrink. Need to counts - get two telzons, look up item # on one and enter it under need to count - why go and really count it. Things that are not suppose to be done legally is what I mean.
Inventory day just stay right with the inventory crew, make sure they count everything, make sure they scan each item not just scan one bar code and put in a count.

I'm kinda curious if my store is going to be that bad. Last year's inventory, we were a .84, and everybody in the store knows that theft from shoplifting alone has at least tripled over this year, especially after these guys broke into our iPod case and stole all our iPods, broke into our laptop case (twice) and stole all our laptops, walked out with desktop computers and LCD TVs, digital cameras, the works. And that's just in Electronics.

ours was .20, on about 144 million in sales. one of my dept's (56) had an overage of about $20,000.00, but dept 16 shrank about $26,000.00. overall the store was good, but i say and have always said that mgmt fudges the numbers.

I work at a Sam's Club in Georgia. There was a shrink test done by a Loss Prevention group that opened the eyes of the Door Greeter that checks the receipts. One of the L.P. guys purchased a soft drink from the Cafe. The Receipt showed 1 (one) item at the bottom. He then ditched the drink, went to Electronics and loaded a huge flat screen T.V. onto a Flat Cart and went to the door. The Door Greeter saw the 1(one) item on the bottom of the ticket, marked it and let the guy go out the door. Of course, he turned around and came back in and showed her the mistake. She never would have known it if he had been a regular shopper. It sure opened her eyes from then on.

My store had ours 1st of April. 3rd year in a row our's sucked. For dept. managers doing our job at our store we are always doing every thing else but a dept. manager's job. Doing price changes in the back room will get you fired at my store. It looks like our market team is finally seing what we all have been saying for so long about our shrink. Let dept. managers do our job. Handle the people who are not doing their job including the managment team. And get us the help we need. I'm on a LOA till the middle of the June. Our new store manager was surpost to be here this week. Maybe he will be diffrant then the last 7 we have had. Then maybe our next inventory won't be so bad. We will see.
