credit card question
Is it acceptable to manually key in a customer's credit card number if their card will not scan?  The register will require that the account number to be re-keyed along with the expiration date.

Yes. The CSM's will have to do an impression and override for it.

At my store, no. If it doesn't scan, we can't use it.

That's weird...but I guess it makes sense. Saves a lot of time.

See, we used to be able to hand-key and imprint, but somewhere along the line our management changed the policy. I'm not even sure WHICH manager changed the policy, since we've gone through 3 or 4 in the last year, and it isn't often that I get cards that need to be hand-keyed.

It'll have to be overridden by a CSM, and some stores do impressions (mine doesn't). But yes.

We have lots of problems with the Wal-mart issued credit cards that the schools and churches use for tax-exempt purchases. They are always getting demagnetized and won't scan. Fortunately, we don't have to do imprints on those.

EBT/Food stamp cards are problematic too. They changed those so you don't have to have a CSM override to key them in.

Yep, 1/2 of the EBT cards that people try to use don't work. Quite a big percentage compared to regular credit cards.

yeah but you do a "rubbing" of the card.
pharmacy also keys in credit cards when they do deliveries. they scribble the customers phone number on the bill.
i think this is retarded and opens the door for a lot of fraud.

our store can key a card. Usually the ones I get that don't swipe are all beat to hell and the customer knows this, and is waiting for their new card. And it is mostly guys o.O

I've gotten all sorts of reason to what happened to the ebt cards. My favorite is that the dog got her wallet. The card has teeth holes! Everytime she comes through I go "ooo the dog toy" I had one girl tell me that the lady at byrne dairy broke her's on purpose.

We have to key in cards all the time. We only do carbons when the register prompts. Most often the cards are the tax exempt credit... used a lot I guess.
