why, why, and, oh yeah, why?
My last night before a well deserved (despite what some think) vacation, and it stormed.  Rain, cloud to ground lightening, almost continuous thunder, wind.  No hail, thank the goddess, but honestly, at times you couldn't see for the buckets of rain coming down.  We had warnings, watches, floods and just generally a darn good night to stay home.

Why then, did people feel it incumbant upon them, once the warnings started to flood into Walmart?

Why do they always do this?  Honestly, if we had a tornado, we'd be shoved into the fitting room area.  Yeah, that place over there, the one with the collapsable walls, that collapse if you sneeze.

Its one of those odd things that have me scratching my head.  Wind storm, gather up the family and go to Walmart, same with rain, sleet, hail, extreme fog, ice and snow.  In fact, the more the TV stresses to stay home and only go out in an emergency, the more people are flocking in to 'shop' for a few hours.

Is it just me?  Or, do I even have to ask if that happens everywhere?'

I dunno. There was a tornado warning and I was driving and my mom told me to go to Walmart.

Guess it's universal.

It happens everywhere... or at least, also in Oklahoma.

When we had our last "major" snowstorm here in Lockport back in January, my store was DEAD. Seriously...I cashed out maybe 20 customers, tops, in electronics the whole day.

Unfortunately, history hasn't repeated itself much since then. :-D

i've always wondered that too! maybe the feel the need to get out of the house?

Everytime the power goes out at my store, we lock the doors, page all customers to the front to checkout before our generator shuts off. there has been time our doors have been locked for 2 or 3 hours. oddly enough there is always a line of people waiting for us to unlock the doors, and they all rush in when we do. it's kinda like people cant survive without walmart.

This also reminds me of working at piggly wiggly back in 2005. We had all those bad hurricanes and, of course tornadoes. my whole city was pretty much screwed up, and soem homes and business were without power for up to a week, even the walmart was closed. piggly wiggly had an awesome generator and also had a refrigorated truck come from home office. people were buying all kinds of meat, milk, and frozen food. it was weird b/c hardly anyone had power! i remember not even getting a 15 minute break that day...

They're figuring that if they get hit by the tornado/storm at Walmart, they'll have standing to sue to get all their expenses covered. That has to be it.

When we had the huge snow/ice storm a while back [like february, I think...] I was asking people what was so important to be in a walmart during a snow/ice storm.

Supplies, I can understand, if one loses power or cant leave, supplies come in handy.

But swimsuits? ... WTF.

You can count on if it rains, people are going to go to Walmart, no doubt about it. Seems like the rain brings them out like crazy. Or if snow is coming, then they come and buy everything in sight, never fails.

It's the same here.

Water over every road in town? Gotta get to Wal-Mart.

Three inches of dangerous ice on top of snow on top of more ice? Better get to Wal-Mart.

'cept me When I don't have to work I never go to Wal-Mart. No matter WHAT. EVER.

Ah the memories... This past winter we had a blizzard... nothing huge just 3 ft... we had a level 3 emergency which means only emergency vehicles are allowed on the road or you can get fined. I was smart and stayed home. Well according to everyone who did show up to work which was 1 csm, 2 cashiers, a manager and maybe 2 floor associates, the store was busy. I can't imagine trying to run a store with so few people. We're a supercenter, the only walmart in the county, and considered an "emergency store". Why were these people in the need to dig out and shop? Must be nuts.
