Cashiering.....HATE!
So, when I was hired, I asked for over nights, but it was shortly before thanksgiving, so they said I was going on days, but to put in the career preferance that I wanted overnights. A few months ago, the overnight CSM, my assistant, and a few of the daytime CSMs told me there was an overnight cashier spot opening. After a couple weeks of being told this, and not hearing anything, I went to the personel office, and they said that no one put in the request for one.

Then I hear, from here and people at my school, that once you're on as a cashier, you're always a cashier. I think I got proof of this yesterday when there was a sign posted saying to talk to the store mamanger about opening in overnights and she tried to talk me out of it. She said it was hard, tetious, montonus work on overnights and cashiers wouldnt' like it. Yeah...cuase cashiering isn't the same thing over and over agian. So I walked right into the personel office and picked almsot every overnight job I qualified for.

I think it's jsut silly that being a cashier means I can't go to a differant department. One assistant manager (our old one) said that if a cashier wants to transfer to another department we have to pester the department manager and assistant non-stop, or else we won't be picked.

Oh, and the computers are stupid when it comes to the scedules. I've been sceduled for 7 days in a row three times now. The first time I didn't catch it and worked it, the second time I did and they jsut combined two four hour days and gave me one nine hour so I didn't "loose hours". (I did anyways because of thier stupidity). Well, this time, my assistant told me to have the CSMs change it. I was working tuesday-monday, with tuesday, wendsday, and thursday being short 4-5 hour shifts, and the other four being 8-9 hours. The csm thought I was lying because thier scedule said I wasn't working on monday (more on that below), so she took me off the scedule for friday, cutting me back 8 hours on an already short pay week. When I asked my assistant if I could jsut switch the monday I;m working and the tuesday I have off he said no becuase they needed everyone up front on mothers day. Last I knew mother's day was on sunday...but we're all sure he's a complete idiot.

Oh yeah, and they've been doing this wonderful little thing that's pissing a few people in electronics off. Part time cashiers that the head CSM/assistant manager want to give more hours to, they're sceduling as a cashier in electronics. When we come in that day, we're suposed to report up front and work as if we were sceduled for the front end. This means on those days we're not on the offical scedule up front, and they can't change our scedules for those days. Electronics is pissed becuase they need the help, and they can't scedule extra people becuae the front end is taking the hours.

i was hired in as a temp cashier on days right before thanksgiving... they made me permanent in january, and i switched to overnights a couple weeks ago because they desperately needed O/N cashiers. basically, the "once a cashier, always a cashier" thing is because they already know they can trust you with the money, etc.. its more of a pain to hire cashiers than other positions because you work with money.

and fyi, O/N cashiering is NOT "just cashiering all over again." at my store, we cashier, but we also take returns and do all the services the service desk normally would, as well as cleaning all the registers, picking up trash and hangers, zoning every single register, picking up orphans, sorting orphan carts from various departments, putting bags out, stocking dept 82, and [on saturdays] putting the new ads out. and that's if we aren't pulled to instock.

:)

I had to pester my assistant to let me step down and get into the money center. I never gave up, finally I told her my reasons and now I am in the money center and I love it. So, don't give up, just keep at them.

Don't blame the managers for the 7 days in a row thing. The computer does that. What happens is the computer doesn't look ahead to see whether scheduled days are not back to back.

I was once scheduled to work 9 days in a row, and the ass't mgr had no problem with me taking a day off in the middle of those 9 days. That was at my old store. At my current store, the computer is leaving me off the schedule board with no posted hours for several weeks so far. The mgrs said to just come in as if my hours are posted. The computer is always wonky.

That thing about being scheduled to work on the Monday after Mother's day--could be because all Mother's Day merchandise will be discounted and people go nuts. I don't know if that actually happens, but you could ask a fellow co-worker who has been there last year.

the CSM was going to give me monday off and have me work on tuesday, my sceduled day off, but because I was sceduled as a "Electronics cashier" she couldn't change it becuase she didn't have the print out for it.

Wow, I worked as a Cashier for 1 year, and tomorrow is my last day. I start in automotive on Saturday. A lady from personnel came out to me and asked if I would like to go to automotive. And me being sick of cashiering, I took it. Thats crazy you need to pester your management, guess I got lucky.

i was a cashier for 2 years before i finally got moved to jewelry. over those 2 years i tried to move 4 different times to sporting goods, electronics, photo lad, and tle. instead of moving me, they hired new people every time which pissed me off. i thought walmart had a rule to move within the store before hiring more people.

when i finally did move, the manager over jewelry came to me, telling me she wanted me in her department, and then she went straight to the store manager to get it approved before she even ran it by the frontend manager. of course the frontend manager threw a fit, and tried to write me up twice during the weeks leading up to me transfering to jewelry.

and according to walmart's policy, you can work up to 9 consecutive before having a day off. my store tends to schedule people for 9 consecutive days after they have a full weekend off (thursday-sunday)

Okay, this is a true story!

When I was at the service desk full time several years ago they used to give you pink slips any time your drawer was off by $5. Well, since they had so many people who had pink slips they decided that after 3 pink slips you were off a register and on the floor for 30 days.

The CSM's didn't want me on the floor and I was notorious at getting pink slips. It was always totals like $6.14 off or something like that. I never claimed to be good at math. Anyway, I got 18 pink slips in one year.

Because they didn't want me off the front end, despite my pink slippage, when they were supposed to write me up for one, they would group together two or three instead. That way they could keep me off the front. They would also not coach me for it for weeks at a time because they didn't want me off the front.

I eventually got a d-day because of those 18 pink slips and a messed up money order. I was told that I could no longer be on the front end. Oh boo hoo. So what happens? They still call me up to check and do service desk breaks every chance they get.

The moral of this story, no matter how bad you suck, no matter what you do, no matter where you go you can't escape the front end.

It must be your store, at my store, I was a cashier and recently accepted a job offer in electronics. Another cashier accepted one in photo. Another in Jewelry. 2 accepted CSS. and 4 went to lawn and garden cashiers. Yeah it is not impossible although you have to talk to the managers a lot.
