| Dreamwidth invite codes |
[11 Jul 2009|09:51am] |
I've got five Dreamwidth invite codes, if anyone is interested, leave your email in the comments (they're screened) or email me at alice.ttlg at gmail.com with "Dreamwidth invite" in the subject.
If you're not sure what Dreamwidth is, it's an LJ alternative designed by a couple people who used to work at LJ and it's very open and transparent in their terms and geared towards fandom (but certainly open to anyone).

| DDOS attack at datacenter |
[28 Mar 2009|10:33pm] |
Yes, it was a DDOS attack, this is from the datacenter:
At approximately 6:30pm [EDT] this evening we started seeing over a 3.5Gps attack against a particular client, which came all the way inbound into our network. The customer in question has been terminated. Our IP engineering department has taken steps to eliminate the inbound path of the attacker and is continuing to monitor our network for any additional anomalies. We apologize for any problems this may have caused.
So there might be some slowness but it should decrease and be back to normal by tomorrow.
[ETA the time zone on the above quote]

| Datacenter having problem |
[28 Mar 2009|05:55pm] |
|
It looks like my serverhost's datacenter is having some problem that slows and/or blocks all access to all the servers they host, including their own. I can't get into their site to file a trouble ticket so I suspect they're having a router problem or possibly under a DDOS attack. The good news is that they usually get those fixed fairly quickly. So please be patient, it'll all come back soon!

| Server still down |
[08 Mar 2009|02:16pm] |
|
Apache - what serves the webpages - is still down, I've put in a ticket with the datacenter to get it fixed. I'll post here when I know more.

Is Vox Populli gone or is it just a server hiccup?

| Free webhosting available |
[12 Aug 2007|07:28pm] |
I'm offering free webspace and a forwarding email address for awhile. Here's the deal:
25 meg webspace for a fan website plus an email address that automatically forwards to your current address.
All fictional material allowed, all ages, gen, het, slash, adult, real people (as long as what's written/pictured is fictional).
You must be able to create your own site and upload it thru ftp. There are NO page builders at Vox Populli.
You must put up a publicly accessible website within 30 days of receiving the site access info from me. I am happy to provide free webspace but I do want to see it used. :)
If this is what you're looking for, please request a site here.
This will be my last post here. Please check out the new help forum at my Glenfinnan Web Hosting site, news and announcements are posted there and you can friend the RSS feed here at LiveJournal, glenfinnanhost.

| New Support Desk and Forum for Vox Populli |
[12 Aug 2007|03:25pm] |
Rather than wandering around between LJ and clones, I've set up something with a few more features. Vox Populli (and Glenfinnan Web Hosting, my non-fannish hosting side) have a Support Desk and a Forum now!
Support Desk: http://glenfinnanhosting.com/support/
The support desk is the place to open a ticket when you're having problems with your account or have questions that deal specifically with your account. You can also open a ticket by email by sending an email to:
support [at] glenfinnanhosting.com
Either way, you'll get back an email confirmation, you'll get notified by email of any replies and you can add to your ticket or reply by email. You can also do that at the above url as well, the first confirmation will include your login info to view your open tickets and all replies.
Forum: http://glenfinnanhosting.com/forum/
The forum takes the place of this LJ, I'll post any news, status updates or announcements there in the News & Announcements category plus, in the Open Discussion category, you can ask general questions there, discuss creating websites, setting up email addresses, subdomains, ftp accounts, using PHP, MySql, Perl, anything related to the services that Glenfinnan and Vox Populli provide. Anyone can answer questions and of course, I'll be on hand to help out too.
Anyone can read the posts at the forum but you will need to register with a valid email address to post or reply to a post.
Both the forum and support desk are hosted offsite so even if the Glenfinnan/Vox Populli server is down, these sites will be accessible. And I have a new offsite email address, contact [at] glenfinnanhosting.com, where you can reach me by email if the server is down - but I will likely direct you to either the support desk (if it's specific to your account) or the forum (if it's about the status of the server), both of these provide better tracks for everyone than just emailing me. (The alice.ttlg [at] ditb.net address still works although I will phase that out in the next month or so.)
ETA: I've syndicated the feed of the News & Announcements category here on LiveJournal. You can friend glenfinnanhost and see any new posts in your flist. It'll be low traffic as I'm the only one who can post in that category. (I've also syndicated the feed at InsaneJournal with the same user name. I tried to set it up at GreatestJournal and got a "database unavailable" error, I'll try again later.)

| I will be offering free websites again soon... |
[07 Aug 2007|12:26pm] |
In light of LJ's ridiculousness, I will be opening up free websites again soon, 50 meg of space (although no mysql, that is only available on pay accounts) and email forwarding.
I'm in the process of setting up the new server and will have to move a domain over there this weekend before I can offer free sites, but feel free to pass the word around, I'll post a notice here when they're available (probably late this weekend or early next week).
Remember that Vox Populli is fan-friendly, post all the porn you like! :) I also revised the TOS not long ago and removed the age restrictions I'd had in there previously. As far as I'm concerned, all fictional stuff about fictional characters (regardless of age) has artistic merit and thus fails the Miller test and is not obscene. Real People fiction is also welcome, as long as there's no images depicting real children involved in real sex.

| Server is up again |
[28 Jul 2007|02:54pm] |
|
The server is up again, everything should be working properly now.

|
| Server down |
[28 Jul 2007|01:16pm] |
Yes, the server is down. I've contacted my host, hopefully they pull their heads out of their butts and get it rebooted in the next hour.
On the good news side, I've begun the process to move to a new server with a new host that maintains their own datacenter so no more of the "we don't host you" crap that my current host wastes my time over. And the new server is faster and more ram and an Intel Pentium processor so better for databases too. Plus it will have a remote reboot port so if a reboot is needed, I won't have to wait on tech support!
I'll be slowly migrating accounts over the next month and will notify each account holder as I do. There should be little to no disruption in service and all logins will remain the same.
Hopefully this will be the last time we have this problem with this old server!

| Server down |
[04 Jul 2007|11:09am] |
Yes, the server is down, I'm in the process of getting it rebooted. It apparently started having problems early this morning but did work at least off and on till about three hours ago.
I'll post here when I have more info.
ETA: All fixed now.

| Clarification on pay account upgrades |
[08 Jun 2007|04:48pm] |
I'm not sure my previous post was clear but all *existing* pay accounts now have double their space and bandwidth and that should be visible when you log into your control panel. And there is no change in the hosting fees you're currently paying.
Anyway, tired now, TGIF!

| Y'all may have noticed... |
[07 Jun 2007|09:04pm] |
Y'all may have noticed a bit of slowness with the server the last few days. ;) cPanel (what powers the hosting service I provide and your hosting account control panels) had a major upgrade go out Sunday night/Monday morning and while it had some nice new features in it, it's just not playing well with others. I had been watching it, trying to determine if there were specific features that were causing the slowdown so I could turn them off, but it seems to be more than one thing so I've rolled back to the previous version and will be staying there for awhile. The server looks to be running much better this evening, load is way down, memory is much lighter and mail is running faster (one of the new features changed how spam assassin was handled and that was a major part of the problem).
I'll keep an eye on it tomorrow and make sure everything is still running smoothly. If anyone is having any specific problems since around 7 pm US central daylight savings time today, Thursday June 7th, please contact me at alice.ttlg [at] populli.org with details of your problem, your website url, etc.

| Connectivity problems should be all fixed now |
[25 Apr 2007|09:02am] |
|
The datacenter is reporting that everything should be running normally now. To put the problem in perspective, the routers that connect datacenters hosting hundreds of servers to the internet are not the same kind of small routers you connect your home PC to - they're more like servers with boards and memory and other parts and they're expensive. So when one breaks down, it isn't just a matter of swapping it with a $60 replacement, it's figuring out which board or memory has gone bad and replacing that part. The datacenter does keep spare parts for the router on hand which is why the problem was resolved so quickly but still they had to go thru several different boards and testing memory to find exactly what was broken. They did work thru the last two nights on this problem and that's why I like having the server in this datacenter, they have very few problems and they work as fast as possible to fix them when they do arise.

|
| Confirmed: Datacenter having router (hardware) problems |
[24 Apr 2007|10:31am] |
Yes, the datacenter is having problems, a router connecting them to the net is down, which means there's partial connectivity. They are migrating customers off that router today, the issue should resolve within 24 hours as they get everyone off that router.
If you can't get into your site or control panel, wait a couple minutes and try again.

| Server connectivity issues |
[24 Apr 2007|10:17am] |
There are some intermittent connectivity issues - the server is up and working fine, not overloaded or anything but since yesterday afternoon/evening, it's not accessible periodically. I suspect that either the datacenter is having some problems with their connection to the net (some portion of it may be down) or they're getting hit by a DOS attack (spammers/hackers who deliberately overload a connection to take it down).
As I have more info, I'll post it here. It should clear up within 24 hours or so, depending on the source of the problem.
