The guqin (古琴) is one of the oldest musical instruments still in use, and embodies the Chinese civilisation's indigenous classical tradition - favored by scholars and literati of the ancient times as an instrument of great subtlety and refinement. With a vast and ancient repertoire, a staggering array of interpretive techniques, centuries of theory from the technical to the metaphysical, and intimate relations with the Chinese civilisation's other arts (poetry, painting, calligraphy, qigong), the guqin constitutes one of the world's richest and most challenging musical heritages.

...yet, for precisely these reasons, it has never been a "popular" instrument, and remains little-understood even in China and amongst her ethnic children spread across the world.
